Enjoy tea and cake on the canal side in the cafe. Understand the whole production process on one of the pre-booked guided tours. Then finish the day off with a visit to the Burleigh factory shop, where we have a wide range of handcrafted pottery. The Prince's Regeneration Trust raised £8.5 million to purchase the Middleport Pottery site and to carry out restoration work which prevented existing jobs and skills from being lost from the area and will ensure the future of this unique site. The funding came from a range of sources including the Regional Growth Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage and European Regional Development Fund as well as from private donors, Stoke-On-Trent City Council has been a key partner in the project. Middleport Pottery continues to be the 'Home of Burleigh'; the pottery business which occupies approximately half the site. Burleigh is now owned by Denby Holdings and they continue to produce beautiful ware in the building which has been their home since it was built in 1888. Opened in 2014 Middleport Pottery features a visitor's centre, Tearoom, Middleport Studios, Burleigh Factory Shop, Exhibitions and fully restored Steam Engine.

Potential for a great arts and crafts space but sadly only a few studios open on our visit. Very small, tight car park (although there appeared to be another closed off area nearby

What a great destination the Middleport Pottery complex is - for a few hours of shopping, learning, relaxing and drinking good coffee. There is far more here than just the Burleigh pottery. Let’s begin with the cafe, which consists of a number of indoor tables in a character building (yes, part of the atmospheric pottery which is again operating) and more outdoor tables beside the canal. They offer a simple menu - teacake, bacon or sausage sandwich or toast at breakfast, and a lunch menu of soup, sandwiches and some hot options served with Staffordshire oatcakes. You enter via the Burleigh shop, next to which is a car park. We arrived as everything was opening at 10am and so had no trouble getting a car park, but things were much busier when we left. The shop is worth a browse, but even better, a wide range of artisans work and offer their craft for sale in separate studios throughout the pottery. So you have the opportunity to purchase something totally bespoke too. And what a friendly and welcoming bunch they all are too. Some 70 staff work in the pottery here, and tours are available so we will pre-book next time. What a gem of a find. Stoke is becoming a great destination. We look forward to bringing friends and visitors with us next time.

My friends from the USA and I visited the various shops, lunched in the tea room and had a heritage tour guided by Rob & Rob. The guided tour was worth every penny. We found some great things in the shops and we enjoyed good food including Staffordshire Oatcakes.

Very interesting site that has been used in many TV programmes. Still a working pottery with additional onsite businesses to look around. The heritage trail is well worth taking with enthusiastic volunteers doing a great job.
