MUSEUM GREAT - AVOID THE CAFE
Went with our young grandson. Met by a very helpful member of staff. Museum excellent and enjoyed it. HOWEVER .... be warned, as per previous reviews the cafe prices are extortionate. Two coffees (luke warm, half full and in paper cups), one VERY SMALL carton of drink, one packet of very small biscuits nearly £12.00. Shocking and absolute rip off. The very small packet of two biscuits £2.50. We will return, but definitely not to the cafe.
Thank you for taking the time to let us know how we did - we are glad to hear that you enjoyed your overall visit. We regret to hear that you were disappointed with your experience in our café. In terms of the pricing of our café, we have an open pricing policy and clearly label products and prices both individually and on prominent pricing boards in the facility. By making a purchase in the Warnefords Café you are showing support to the Museum and helping us achieve our charitable objectives (all profits are re-invested into the Museum), we believe our offer and prices are on a par with similar attractions in the local area. Rest assured that all visitor feedback is taken into account, as it provides us the valuable opportunity to review and improve our offering. We are glad to hear you will be returning to the Museum, and we will look forward to welcoming you again soon for a more positive experience. ^AP

    Positive Changes
Living close to the Fleet Air Arm Museum, it is a place I have visited many times so when trying to decide what to do with our 4 year old son on a potentially rainy day, we opted for another trip to Yeovilton. And I'm glad we did. Since our last visit around 18 months ago, so much has changed. It still has the same feel but there have been a few new additions, including a small little soft helicopter which our son didn't want to stop playing with. The changed Carrier experience was also great, much more freedom of movement and the lift through the decks of the ship was really well done. The staff, as always, were friendly and the man who introduced the lift experience to us was very friendly and chatty. There was also an Easter egg hunt around the museum which our son loved, and he got a bit of chocolate at the end for spotting all the eggs. Typically it turned out the weather was fine so we had the packed lunch we brought with us on the picnic benches and burnt off some energy in the play area. The shop, like most museum shops, isn't the cheapest but a lot of it isn't too pricey. Our son took £20 from his moneybox and came home with 3 things, one of which was a model of a Lancaster which is good quality. In all, what we thought was going to be a 1-2 hour walk round a museum we know well ended up being a 3-4 hour trip to somewhere which lots of new things to see. Best of all, the entry tickets now give you annual access. This is something we've had elsewhere before and I'm so pleased the Fleet Air Arm has gone the same way. Has someone who lives nearby, having the option of going there any time without having to find the money is such a help. We look forward to coming back soon!
Andrewfoot1984, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience at the Fleet Air Arm Museum! As a returning visitor, we are so delighted to hear that you continue to enjoy visiting us, and we appreciate your fantastic comments about our attractions and staff. We strive for 100% satisfaction, and it is great to see you that you and your family had such a positive experience on your recent visit. We cannot wait to welcome you back on your annual ticket, and thank you again for your positive feedback and review! ^AP

    Interesting Museum
Visited on Friday 04th November 2022 on my first visit since the early 1980s. Entry gives you access to the site for the rest of the year. Exiting the A303 is a challenge to get to here. The site is divided into several halls, containing examples of aircraft and helicopters used in British sea-based flights through the years. I particularly enjoyed the viewing room, with access to the main airfield, where I witnessed a trainee helicopter pilot being put through their paces. Other highlights included the first jet plane to land on an aircraft carrier and several examples of airframes that were in service during the Falklands campaign. Decent cafe but very limited hot food options.
Cheekycockney190757, your wonderful feedback and rating mean a lot to us. Please do make the most of your ticket and come back to visit us soon. ^SB

Great museum let down by lack of lunch space
Overall a great museum for exhibits and information. We were a bit dubious due to the cost however we spent 4hrs there with our 8 & 5 year old so it was a good rainy day out. However it was really let down by having nowhere to eat lunch inside (unless you buy food at their cafe). We even asked if we could sit somewhere indoors for our children to eat their sandwiches and they said this was not permitted. A small place to eat lunch indoors would make all the difference especially with it being a family attraction, and not everyone can afford to buy lunch out!
LucyH123456789000000, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We are pleased to see you enjoyed your visit to the museum however are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience during part of your visit. Our café seating area is open for all, including those that bring a picnic, though we are sorry to hear this information didn't reach you during your visit and we will aim to work on our messaging surrounding our café seating. We aim to provide a positive experience for all, so we are sorry to hear that some elements of your visit fell short of this. Thank you again for taking the time to leave us a review and as our tickets are valid for 12 months, we hope to welcome you back soon for unlimited visits within the year. ^SF

Great museum, fix some of the little things
Great museum and very informative. Spent a good 3-4 hours exploring on a very wet day. Good to be able to watch some of the active helicopters landing and taxiing around. It’s on the pricey side for a museum but worth it. Downsides: the lack of indoor area for picnics is a pain on a wet day. Had no plans to buy food there so had to wait until end of museum. Very hungry children! Secondly, if you are going to take the trouble to put dividers on the bins for general waste and recycling, make sure it’s actually separated and not going into a single bin. Half hearted and misleading efforts at being green.
Bristol_SMajor, thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback about your experience with us. We're so pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit, however we are sorry to hear some elements of your experience were not as expected. Great museum of naval aviation
This is an excellent museum displaying naval aviation through the years, along with one of the prototype Concordes. The site is completely undercover, so bad weather will not spoil the day. The museum is spread across four display halls and has a large number of aircraft as well as other aviation exhibits. The museum periodically swaps aircraft between the main site and their store, which gives you the chance to see something different on your visits if not too frequent. There is plenty to see and it will take three or more hours to view it properly. The carrier experience is novel, entering from it through a couple of helicopters placed either side of the dividing wall. One minor criticism of the carrier display, would be that the old set up of film footage projected onto either on of the display hall was better than the current film displayed onto the side wall. There is a simulated carrier superstructure which gives an idea of what it would be like on the real thing, It also gives a different perspective of the aircraft on display. There is an area in the corner of one of the halls where you can look out onto the active airfield at Yeovilton and see current FAA helicopters in action. There is a café on site, but like a lot of museums is a little pricy. That said I went there for the aviation content rather than food.
Foxcile, we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to Fleet Air Arm Museum! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We appreciate all feedback as it gives us an opportunity to improve and your comments will be passed onto our team for internal review. A brilliant day out
What a smashing museum. Some amazing aircraft on display including a Concorde, a Swordfish and more Harriers than you could shake a stick at. Planes everywhere across four halls. The 1970's carrier was very good and cleverly done and worth a walk around. The museum was full of ageing men, as myself fully enjoying the experience. There were also some families. Without wishing to generalise too much the older males tended to get more out of it. The hands on stuff for kids was good and the outside playground looked fun. However, as a 54 year old visiting by himself, I did not feel it was appropriate to use it. The staff were knowledgeable and only too willing to talk about stuff. The talk about Humphrey the Helicopter was most engaging. The gify shop was also excellent. The only mediocre point was the cafe, the choice there was limited and the restaurant was no longer open. Did I enjoy myself? Thoroughly. Would I go again? In a heartbeat.
25screenwipes, we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to Fleet Air Arm Museum! Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your experience. We look forward to welcoming you again soon. ^SF

    Some really imaginative displays!
A really interesting naval museum with some fantastically presented exhibits. We particularly enjoyed the air craft carrier simulation display and the Skua display - very dramatic! The volunteers were vey helpful and knowledgeable, indeed all the staff were very friendly.

Day out to Fleet Air Arm Museum
Excellent museum. Really friendly and knowledgeable staff. They have an excellent talk on the Westland Wessex ‘Humphrey’ and its Falklands exploits. The carrier deck hanger is very well done, and you can get close to many of the aircraft.

Amazing to see and kids enjoyed themselves
A lot to see with clear history of each area and aircraft. The Good - You can walk through as a circuit, able to see displays from higher up in some sections and then opportunity to get up and close. Brilliant displays of models, kit and aircraft and some real interactive areas. Onsite cafe with plenty of toilets dotted around. Gift shop in entrance/exit but not in your face. Plenty of volunteers providing briefs about the displays and everyone was polite. Outside there is a play area and table so great for picnic. The Bad - Nothing!
Hastings_tripper, we're so glad that we were able to go above and beyond your expectations! We are very happy we could provide you with a positive experience and we will be sure to pass your comments along to the team at the Fleet Air Arm Museum. Thanks for the recommendation, and have an amazing day! ^AP

We had both visited this museum many years ago but it was well worth a return visit. It is substantially different and much improved on what was already a great experience. Centred on the fabulous Concorde which you can walk through without further cost or queues and the wonderful historic aircraft throughout. In addition they now have an aircraft carrier experience which helps visitors to understand how huge they are when they stand on the ‘deck’ and visit the flying control bridge. The lift to get there is inspired - I won’t explain it or it will spoil the surprise and effect! The cafe is now inside the museum.

Visited as a family (2+2) and to be quite honest I was a bit disappointed.

I appreciate the effort put into curating a collection of historic aircraft, I couldn't help but feel that the overall experience lacked the "wow factor" I had anticipated.

Our interaction with a staff member was positive and he was obviously knowledgeable. Signage, guiding visitors through the museum could have been clearer.

This amazing trip which is fun for everyone is a must-do for anyone who even has the slightest interest in planes since it is a great place to learn more and even see helicopters take off in front of your own eyes! We went with a family of 5(3 adults and 2 children ) and had a blast! The only reason I did not rate this excellent experience 5/5 is because sadly it was not very accessible and there were lots of stairs to get to the best things. However, I would still strongly recommend doing this and having a great time learning!

This is a much loved and visited family favourite however there are several very detrimental changes. New changes to the A303 near the museum mean that you now pass some way beyond the museum and turn left to cross the main road before heading back to the Yeovilton turning. If you are coming some distance call at one of the A303 services for the toilet as the only ones at the museum are inside after you have booked in or bought tickets.
The good restaurant facilities outside the main hall are closed and neglected. These had a wide range of food, hot and cold and toilets. The new restaurant facility has a very small serving area and few staff, possibly because of it s small size. There are meals the choice being boring sandwiches and children s boxed meals. Crisps and biscuits, a soup of the day and pasties and sausage roles in paper bags which are in heated cabinets and the pastry on these is dried out and hard.
We were served by a young man who seemed to not know what he was doing and looked lost. He totalled up our tray contents added a pasty, pointed at the card machine and issued a receipt all with no speaking or smile. One of the other staff did my coffee with a smile and greeting.
There are many excellent exhibits as usual but the Aircraft Carrier Experience has been ruined by modernisation. The old helicopter flight which gave the experience of a short flight and excited the children is now a simple walk onto the helicopter and out the other side onto the flight deck. Gone is the big screen showing aircraft circling and preparing to land. That is now a blank grey wall. For some reason a First World War fighter is on the flight deck. The Phantom take off is now just a static exhibit. The Control tower which used to give a good atmosphere of an aircraft carrier with doors controlled by red and green lights and close up of realistic parts of the ship is replaced with bland scenes with holographs of current personnel talking to you. The passages are basic with odd bits of equipment tacked on. The atmosphere is gone. The figures are now painted matt grey for some unknown reason making it even less real.
One highlight is the talk and demonstrations for families and children. The staff member giving these was excellent with simple explanations and fire and explosions exciting everyone.
Overall worth a visit but missing some of the bits that made it exceptional.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback about your experience at the Fleet Air Arm Museum. We’re sorry to hear that not all elements of your visit were a positive one. Regretfully, we have no plans to re-open the Swordfish Restaurant or adjacent facilities in the immediate term. Although of benefit and accessible to some wider site visitors, the Swordfish Restaurant was labour intensive and in comparison in a separate building, was expensive to operate. The new facility inside the Museum is commercially more viable for us and generates significantly more profit to invest back into the Museum, and better helping us achieve our charitable objectives. However, we are sorry to hear of your experience with our team. This is not the level of service we aim to provide, and rest assured your comments have been passed to our General Manager for internal review. We did make some changes last Summer as part of a number of investments onsite. We wanted to change the ‘Carrier’ narrative slightly away from a core Ark Royal era narrative and detail progress and almost evolution of the Aircraft Carrier, allowing us to also include important elements of the current Queen Elizabeth Class era and Strike Group activity. We feel this change is correct in terms of storytelling, although we are sorry you feel that the new experience does not deliver the ‘theatre’ as referred in quite the way you remember. We have invested in the use of new technology to enhance our audio visual displays on the flight deck, such as the ‘Pepper’s Ghost’ projection within the island, as well as updating all audio visual displays. The screens in the island for example, explain the differences between the Ark Royal period and that from the current era. We were fortunate enough to interview current serving personnel aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth as part of the development of the project, so this testimony has influenced the content in these spaces and our related museum interpretation. We are genuinely sorry the changes overall hasn’t been well received. We thank you again for your feedback and we do hope to welcome you again in the future. ^SF

We visited the air museum on Sunday morning. Lots of parking available. Being blue light card holders, we had our tickets discounted which meant paying around £30 for both of us so great value.
We walked around admiring the aircraft, lots of easy to read signs and displays telling you what you’re looking at. The toilets were clean and tidy. Of note was the aircraft carrier experience. We went through the “aircraft carrier” and in each room there was a screen which sensed when you arrived and then had a real person talk you through what the room was. Seemed pretty modern and fun, and the information was informative and interesting. The Skua display was also pretty good.
The cafe… we asked for a non-dairy alternative for milk, the reply we got was the “alternative is black tea or black coffee”! In this day and age it needs to be better, we can’t be the only people that don’t enjoy dairy. Whether or not this is the policy at the cafe or just the member of staff’s opinion isn’t clear, but either way it needs to be better.
Overall exactly what you’d expect from an air museum. Nothing particular to write home about, but an enjoyable and interesting way to pass a couple of hours.

For the price I would say it is reasonable. They have numerous aircraft and all the history is there, black and white for you to read and understand.
The interactive features, such as allowing children to enter the cock pit of certain aircraft is a nice touch.
I’m afraid myself and my wife found that the halls, 1-4 did not seem to flow.
I felt as though you did not travel through time or past to present in a methodology as I imagined.
The content was there, albeit, I felt as though the structure and layout could be improved to engaged more audiences and tell a story in a much more centered and structured way.
The idea of numerous donation plaques established through the building on a regular basis also felt to me that the Royal Navy are attempting to pinch every last penny they can.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback about your visit with us, though we are sorry to see your low star rating. The museum has recently developed a master interpretation strategy, and orientation as well as our themes and storytelling are important as we consider future changes, and we appreciate your feedback. We have five electronic donation points around the museum galleries. As a charity, we survive on the income generated from visitors and their kind donations, and we look to that support to ensure we can continue our vital conservation work. These are aimed to be positioned discreetly amongst our displays and we gratefully appreciate any donations received. I think the last time I visited the Fleet Air Arm Museum was probably over 40 years ago! So, with a 'locals' offer currently available, I thought I'd go and refresh my memory!

Strangely, some of it was still as I remembered it. It was good to see Concorde again!

There is a good collection of aircraft to see and plenty of information boards to read.

I've read several reviews about the Aircraft Carrier experience being poor after its upgrade. However, I did enjoy this area as I've not seen it before, but I guess when the museum is busy it will be hard to watch the talking video screen thingies without people in the way!

Off of hall 2, there is a small area where you can look outside to the airfield, this to be honest could do with a tidy up to make it a bit more appealing!

The last thing which I don't really understand is that you can pay in cash to enter the museum, and yet the cafe is 'card only' how or why...........?

Hi there, We appreciate you taking the time to leave us this feedback. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed many aspects of your visit. In terms of Hall 2, please be assured that we are currently working on a site improvement plan and the viewing area is an important part of this and a priority for the future. This is a really good museum with a big range of planes, helicopters and a great recreation of life on board an aircraft carrier. Info boards are good. Very good historical range from the earliest flying kites to the late 70s. Walking through Concorde number 2 is a highlight.

I visited the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm museum with my family and we had a wonderful time. The museum is very impressive and informative, with four exhibition halls, over ninety aircraft, and thousands of artefacts. We learned a lot about the history and achievements of naval aviation, from the first flights in World War I to the modern aircraft carriers and helicopters. We also enjoyed the interactive exhibits, such as the Aircraft Carrier Experience, where we felt like we were on board a real ship, and the Concorde 002, where we got to see the first British supersonic jet. The museum staff were very friendly and helpful, and the facilities were clean and well-maintained. It was a fascinating and fun day out for the whole family, and we highly recommend it to anyone interested in aviation or naval history.
