About
Little changed since 1788, Ellisland Farm is where the international anthem to friendship, Auld Lang Syne, was written. The farmstead was built by Scotland’s National Bard Robert Burns, as his romantic first home with young wife Jean Armour. Ellisland is the place to fall in love with Burns and is considered his most authentic surviving domicile. He produced a quarter of his life’s work here including the epic masterpiece, Tam o Shanter and songs like My Heart’s in the Highlands and Bonnie Doon. Visit the room in which he wrote these works and discover more about farm life in rural Dumfriesshire in the late 18th century. Along with the historic house and displays you can also explore the farmyard, farm buildings, orchard and take a walk along the River Nith to enjoy the tranquility, woodlands and perhaps spot some of the wildlife that Burns loved.

A must for.Burns aficionados with many examples.of.his writings and belongings.
Even for someone.less interested in Burns it is an interesting place to understand the difficulties of being a farmer and excise man in the past. Interesting old agricultural, dairying artifacts in the original steadying buildings.
A lovely site, v quiet and with good walks through the orchard and along the River Nith. Dogs allowed everywhere except in the one main cottage.

Three friends and I experienced the tour of Ellisland Farm earlier today and we were all impressed by this little gem of an attraction and its beautiful surroundings.
A great part of that was down to the knowledge and enthusiasm of our guide, Georgia. She really brought to life what it would have been like living in Ellisland in the late 18th century through the excellent and informative guided tour she provided. I can honestly say she is one of the best guides I've encountered not just through the depth of her knowledge of the property and the time Robert Burns and Jean Armour spent there but her wider knowledge of Burns life and works, particularly of the periods of his life spent in the Dumfries area. She clearly enjoys her job and has a real talent in conveying her knowledge with charm, understanding, appreciation and wit.
I imagine Ellisland Farm is a very understated and under appreciated asset on the tourist trail but I thoroughly recommend it to anyone visiting Dumfries and Galloway.

Fabulous place. So much to see and to learn. Lovely setting beside the Nith. We had a special viewing opportunity of the newly refurbished holiday cottage, which was impressive. Burns didn’t make much success of farming here, but it is an important place in development of his literary output and family life.

We visited on a day sadly the museum was shut. However although unable to go into the various buildings two volunteers who were working were so kind. We walked round the farm and met a delightful gentleman working in the yard who told us so much about Burns and his life and works.
Fantastic place and will go back one day when we are next in Scotland.

I attended this local attraction as part of a tour and was not disappointed. The tour was very informative and the various items on display along with their long term plans make it well worth supporting this venue.

It was good to visit another place connected with Robert Burns. Part of the visit is a guided tour to start. The guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It is obvious that a large donation of cash to make improvements is needed. Hopefully this will happen.

We had a lovely morning here during our excellent week in Dumfries & Galloway in August. The weather was superb and we were able to take out Staffy on a wonderful walk in the extensive grounds which overlook the river. One of the guides came out to meet us and gave us a talk about the history of the farm and Robert Burns and his family, which really added to our experience there. You can't take your dog inside any buildings but there is plenty to see that's outdoors. I really recommend it - we will go again when we visit for a holiday next year. You need to book if you want a guided tour but if just visiting the grounds, you do not.

We booked on a guided tour and what a little gem it was, the tour guide was amazing he took us back in time to when Robert Burns lived at the farm and spoke of his and Jeans life there and also his work as an excise man. This also provided an insight to what Robert Burns was like from helping his brother out to his love of women
Very well worth a visit, very informative and shows original farming implements Burns used working on his farm, this visit has raised an interest in Robert Burns and his works and we hope to learn more. Very friendly staff small tour groups, plenty of hand sanitizer and covid safe. We will definitely be back to visit soon highly recommend.

Dear Curator Stuart . I have some spare time on my hands for a few days during the first week of October. Would some help be welcome at Ellisland in the form of manual work .. some decorating / gardening maybe ? I am a member with opinions (!) and maybe time for me to " put something back " and offer some form of help towards this very worthy cause .

Sorry I can't answer the traveller's question - best to contact Ellisland direct via the website ?

Had a fantastic experience at Ellisland Farm on Tuesday . The curator Stuart certainly knows his subject well and with offers of cups of tea makes one feel most welcome . He was explaining that he had recently taken on the role which is something of a challenge. My question is this - why are there so many artefacts exhibited which were clearly manufactured after Burns time here ? My guess is that these items have been "donated" by generous folk who no longer have use for them. I know that as a charity they probably cannot be sold ..but surely if the proceeds were used for more relevant purpose or even maintenance of this delightful site - that has to be an option ? I am not a friend of the trust , but I would suggest to them that this should be a point for discussion. Other than this - a superb and memorable afternoon walking in the "Hare field "and even the sun shone for us . Beautiful.

Hi and thanks for asking this very apt question. Over the past few years The Friend's of Ellisland maybe have viewed the farm as more of a Museum of agricultural history and thus we have built up a very large collection of Victorian and Edwardian machinery and household items.
Mr Williamson who gifted the farm creating the Ellisland Trust made it clear that the farm be used for the contemplation of the life and work of Robert Burns only. Thus we are working at present to reverse the look of the farm and house to the time that the Burns family lived at Ellisland.
When you visit again you will notice that the ploughs have been removed from the front of the house and that the byre has been cleared of some of its contents.
Being historically accurate can be challenging however we are striving to make Ellisland as close as possible. Big questions lie ahead though and maybe you could let us have your opinions on whether we should take down the buildings that were built after Burns departure? Should we thatch the house? Any other things you would like to see or not see at Ellisland.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Stuart
