A very wet day but a lovely place to visit. Nice cafe as you get towards the reservoir well worth getting a sandwich and coffee.
Lovely scenery at the waterside with loads of wildlife

Great play area
May 2021 • Family
Great play area with loads of variety of both kids. Sadly they were way too whingy to enjoy the reservoir.

The shop and toilets were fine, cafe is just sandwiches and pasties - not a cafe.

Brilliant and Hugely Dog Friendly
Apr 2021 • Family
We had a lovely couple of hours here today with our Dog.

Parking in the car parks is £5 for the day but like many we just parked on the grass verge next to the road for free

There are very clean toilets open next to the main entrance and a well stocked little shop

The kids play park was impressive, and best for us was the fenced off grass area where we could let our greyhound off her lead for a run

The dog field is very safe, 100% fenced off, huge, and there is only one heavy gate to get in and out so almost zero chance of an escape

There are also picnic tables in the dog park and all over too.

The walk around the reservoir is flat and well maintained and there is an abundance of wildlife from birds to sheep and cows to enjoy

We had limited expectations of our first ever visit here but we will be back many times in the years to come

Called a day before the gates were opened to walk round the reservoir but still beautiful quiet place and never fails to relax you.
Called for a takeaway coffee & hot chocolate before we left and the service off the lady serving us was 100% very helpful with some questions I asked.
Can't wait to call again soon!

Beautiful Spot
Sep 2020
I visited for the first time in autumn 2020. I made the mistake of parking in the entrance with cafe and play area, then walking around trying to find the reservoir! I didn't realise that I should have continued on driving past this area to the next parking area, which is the reservoir. There is a parking fee however. I found it a really relaxing spot and clearly very popular for fishing and walking. There were several parking spots around the reservoir, so you can choose at which spot to park then walk. I found it a real godsend in all honesty for fresh air and exercise, and great stress relief during this awful pandemic. It really is a beautiful spot when the sun shines!

Helpful Staff

We stopped here on our journey home from a weeks holiday in Northumbria. Steve in the shop was really friendly and helpful. My children enjoyed an afternoons fishing bringing home some nice rainbow trout for tea. The rangers were working hard collecting up any signs of litter and keeping the place naturally beautiful. They also provided friendly advice and encouragement to novice anglers. Thank you👍

Well worth the walk around the reservoir, take in some great views while walking around howden reservoir as well , keep an eye out for all of the mountain bikes that are using the same route , a chance for some great photography, if you listen closely you will hear the call of the local red grouse and might even spot them , plenty of mountain hares about if your very patient

not worth the drive and better walks elsewhere

not quite sure where the other reviewers come from but in my view not a terrible good experience , in fact quite boring. The lower car park area free which the top end isn't ! and was poorly sign posted and difficult to find. The footpath by the reservoir was about it and wo be tide if you are not a fee paying fisherman as some jobsworth will be down on you like a ton of bricks. The whole experience despite good weather was rather flat

Good for the soul
Sep 2020
Derwent Reservoir is an oasis of peace and quiet. We parked at Pow Hill Country Park and then walked along to the head of the reservoir on the user friendly, all user path, good for pushchairs and wheelchairs. If you walk across to the other side of reservoir there are picnic areas with lovely views. It is gloriously quiet and is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life for a while. You could spend a couple of hours here or all day, walking the trails and having a picnic. Highly recommend.

Never been before, came here to let my dog have a nice long walk and swim, too many silly rules, can’t have dog off the lead even though the sign for having dog on the lead is tiny and Doesn’t actually state to keep your dog on the lead. It’s a place of natural beauty, you should be able to let your dog off the lead, it’s a shame humans think they are better than animals and have more rights. Extremely disappointed, wouldn’t recommend this strict Miss Trunchball place to anyone, what a waste of open land.
