About
The lake, an artificial reservoir, is thought to have been constructed in the 3rd Century BC, either by Mahanaga of Ruhuna or his successor Yatala Tissa of Ruhuna, in order to irrigate paddy lands and supply water to the flourishing city of Tissamaharama. The lake was restored in 1871 [4] . The embankment (or bund) on the southern shore supports the Tissa-Kataragama road (B464), which is lin

An Interesting place to visit. Tissa Wewa, an artificial reservoir, was built by Devanampiya Tissa in order to increase the water supply to his capital city of Anuradhapura. Only Panda Wewa and Abhaya Wewa are older.

This is probably the best walking path in down south to have a relaxed walk, apart from Rampart in Galle. This has a recently built walking path around the river. It is windy and walk in the evening is perfect as there is enough wind to beat the heat waves. You can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake, while walking/jogging. There are small street vendors who sell fried fresh water fish and prawns. We did not feel they are fresh and looked as if they were brought from some outside place to sold by the riverside deceiving customers. Therefore, simply take a walk, burn some fat and enjoy the view!

Beautiful scenery. Wish we had time to explore the area more. The view of the Tissa Maharamaya Dagoba is stunning. The Dagoba and Wewa(tank or reservoir) Built by the people in the 3rd Century Before Christ is impressive, even though the wewa nor the dagoba are not the oldest in the area.

In the summer of 2018 we (Dutch familie of 4, kids 13 and 18) travelled to discover the beauties of Sri Lanka.
We took a walk from Hotel the Grand Yala to Debarawewa lake and then halfway around Tissa Lake. We saw a lot of birds, visited a pottery where they made oil lamps for the temples and pots for the curd, saw a lot of water buffalo's and trees full of flying dogs (we watched them fly a day later at about 17:45)
At the new boulevard we saw a lot of people bathing and were invited to see the lake from a boat which we declined.
We ended our walk at the Tissamaharama Stupa.

What a nice little surprise this turned out to be, sunset boat ride was very lovely, we had a nice boatman who took us around, we saw this magical bird tree filled with hundreds of ibis and other birds, it was so breathtaking!
Retrospectively speaking, this 1 hour boat ride was much more exciting than our 7 hour Yala safari the next morning.
Boat ride as of mid-Feb 2018 cost Rs 3,000, picked up directly from the shores of our hotel. So worth it!

Lovely hour long boat trip around the lake just before sunset. Saw many bird varieties, huge fruit bats and crocodiles. Lovely to walk around as well.

The Tissa Wewa or lagoon is absolutely beautiful and if you are lucky enough to be staying in the vicinity do see it at varying times of the day. It has glorious light at sunrise, is lovely in the full sun of the day and has a really lovely appearance at sunset when the colours are reflected in the water. One of the great attractions of the place is seeing birds flying into the trees in the late afternoon to roost for the night. Generally bird life in this area is spectacular. You will also enjoy thousands of bats hanging in the trees near to the water. Overall this is a very special place and well worth exploring.

Go the far end (from the town) at about 5.30pm and watch the birds come back to roost for the night and the thousands of large fruit bats head out for the night. It is simply spectacular.
