Visited the island where the whalers from Europe hunted whales then rendered the fat into oil for the lamps back in Europe. A windy day which really evoked the conditions for the workers so many hundreds of years ago. The interpretative centre on the mainland...More

I had expected that there would be an actual reproduction of a whaling station. In fact, there is a delightful small museum and very informed interpreters but nothing like what is shown on their handout. After listening to the presentation, we were then left on...More

We visited quite early in the season (at the end of June) and the heritage interpreters were not available in costumes yet; otherwise it would be even more interesting. Nevertheless, the museum had so much information and the National Parks people were very patient in...More

The two fellows there were very helpful giving us a good history of whaling in the Red Bay area that goes back to the mid 1500's. The museum is well presented, but they are in the process of relocating it to another location. Folks in...More

This small museum is about the Basque whaling expeditions that were in Red Bay in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is outstandingly well done. Every exhibit is clearly described, with additional emphasis on how the various artefacts were recovered, either from land or from...More

Fabulous and informative - Basque Whaling Site. The centre was informative and the staff were knowledgeable. The boat trip and the island visit was spectacular!

Take the time to visit Saddle Island as part of this experience. I am not sure if small children would enjoy this museum as there is a lot of reading to understand the displays.

The museum is quite lovely and the displays well done, but I left thinking there should be more to it. A Well worth a quick stop and the staff that worked there were lovely and very knowledgeable.

Enjoyed the museum and walking around the area. The coastline is beautiful. There is a restaurant onsite with good food. Sadly for us, the separate museum building with the replica boat in it was under renovation so we were unable to visit it.

I normally would post this kind of feedback directly to the site itself, but sadly, there is no way to contact the site directly. The email address given does not work. So, here goes. This is not a bad site, but with the addition of...More

The ferry leaves St.Barbe at 8:00 and will take 2:11 to cross. Add 10 to 15 minutes to get off the ferry. Then add 1:14 to drive to Red Bay. You would arrive by 11:45. The ferry leaves at 3:00, you will need to be at the... More
