Really enjoyed this short visit
Aug 2019
Quaint museum with a lot of charming touches. It has its own information centre housed within with many brochures on bourail so regardless of the museum it’s a good stop as well as selling local honey and soaps. There’s a few chairs and tables outside which can be an option to bring some sandwiches from the nearby bakery.

A small and interesting collection of life in the region from past years. The guilotine was the highlight for me.

Came on Easter Monday was not open website confusing still pretty place looked out of place in the middle of nowhere. Lovely old stone building worth the effort plan your trip as nothing was open in the afternoon no where to get food.

Nothing fancy - just a nice bit of history.

Simple and friendly little museum. Worth 15-30 minutes to get acquainted with the history of the area and the many influences on the local cultures.

To understand the local area I normally find the small local museums a great information source. The displays are well labelled for French and English.

Great Little Museum with a New Zealand Connection
Oct 2017 • Couples
Took my parents to Bourail for the day. Lovely tables in the shade outside the museum so had our picnic lunch there. No charge and beautiful location.

Took a tour of the museum and it catered well for english speakers. While small it was very interesting and it has the only guillotine left in New Caledonia which had previously seen service. A dedicated section the New Zealand 3rd regiment who were stationed in Bourail in World War 2 so cool New Zealand Collection.

Go to a Patisserie or Boulangerie in Noumea buy some lunch and sit out the back in the shade, best place for this in Bourail.

Excellent local museum with good English interpretation. New Caledonia's only guile-teen was a surprise. Also went to the local markets which are not large but a great spot to people watch

A LITTLE GEM
Jun 2017 • Couples
Although obviously put together on a limited budget the museum presents a fascinating insight into the the early days of European settlement in New Caledonia. Fortunately we understand French as there are no English translations, which is a pity, but it would still be worth the small fee to visit this museum.
