Definitely a moderate hike. Bring water! And, maybe a snack just in case. The waterfall at the end is beautiful.

This is a nice short hike that I went to one morning. There is a very small parking lot near the start of the trail that can only fit 4-5 cars but there is more parking along the roads in the little town before you get to the trailhead. I got there at 9 in the morning and there were only 2 other cars in the parking lot.

I mostly had the trail to myself as I hiked. It is very well marked so you will know where you are going at all times. It is mostly shaded by the forestry so I didn’t get too hot. Wear shoes with good grip to them as there are wet parts that are slippery. The waterfall at the top is great. The signs will take you to the top of the waterfall but there are paths that take you to the bottom where you can swim if you want.

The hike up took me about 40 minutes and I spent about 20 minutes exploring near the waterfall and sitting to eat a snack. Then it was about 30 minutes back to my car.

Beautiful place with a very special vegetation and climate. Everything is covered with trees, so the hiking route is very pleasant.

This hike was one of our favorite activities during our stay in Sao Miguel. We were lucky enough to stay at an Airbnb right next to the trailhead, so we got up early one morning and hiked up before anyone else was there. The hike to the waterfall is just lovely- we saw so many birds and gorgeous plants and even a bunch of chickens with babies! There are so many breathtaking areas to stop along the water and take in the scenery. The actual waterfall itself is quite lovely. This should be a must on your to do list.

Definitely a highlight and one of the most beautiful hikes we’ve been on. Salto do Prego waterfall hike is a moderate hike that is made easier with hiking poles (though not needed, they will be helpful for the muddier and rougher terrain spots). A solid tip on how to navigate the hikes on the island is to follow the trail markers. The red and yellow lines will be parallel if going the correct way. They will cross indicating the wrong way, and will hook left or right to indicate a turn is required. It goes through some of the forest terrain to arrive at the beautiful waterfall which is the highlight of the journey. Fantastic and beautiful result which was well worth the effort. If you elect to do the round trip like we did, you will go through Senghuino an old town up on the hill where we descended down along with some ducks along the way. The road leading to the trailhead is narrow so it was a tight fit driving and parking there. Suggest you keep going until you get to the point where it tightens. You may have to fold your windows in to get in/out of the parking spot and back down the road. The hike itself would take around 3 hours total due to the terrain. If you found this review to be helpful, please give it a thumbs up so I know where to focus my efforts in the future, thanks!

Nice hike to a beautiful waterfall. Don't navigate to the waterfall itself on Google maps! It sends you to the middle of nowhere. When you are in the designated spot according to Google: don't descend the nearby "4x4 only"-road on foot, you'll have to climb back up again!

Instead navigate to "Trailhead - cascato do Prego" in the village of Faial da Terra and park your car there. It's a nice but sometimes steep hike to the waterfall. Took us (fit 35&40yo) about 30mins one way. Also quaint little village to have a nice espresso afterwards for only €0,50!

This was an amazing experience. We arrived to the trailhead relatively early (maybe 930 am) and begun our hike.

Parking is along a long narrow uphill road, the earlier you get there the closer you can park to the top.

This trail is a loop. The left takes you up a very long, very steep cobble stone road. The road goes through a cute little village where they had a “cold beer” stand.

We decided to go right. It was less paved and more of a traditional hike. Some steep parts, some steadier inclines. The day we went was very hot and humid, no breeze, so we were all very hot. There was lots of shade from the trees on this path.

The waterfall itself was very pretty. We arrived with only 2 people sitting on the rocks below. By the time we braved our way into the cold waterfall pool more people started arriving and it soon was overrun with tourists. Don’t get me wrong, the waterfall and swim was amazing, but if you get there at the wrong time good luck finding a spot to enjoy.

Walking back we went down the cobblestone road. That had no shade and was completely exposed to the sun. Very steep.

If I had to do it all over again I’d definitely still do this hike.

We did this trail with our six year old and our five month old.
It's a two km trail leading up to a beautiful waterfall of pure, ice cold water.
We averages 3km/hour and took a total of two hours to arrive back.
We listened to water flowing and cascading all the way through. Some arras could be better kept but the whole walk was beautiful and serene.

As many have already described, it's a beautiful hike to a beautiful waterfall. I'll add that one can also continue upwards and onwards to a second impressive waterfall at Salto do Cagarrao. You'll see the trail sign to the left of Salto do Prego. It's a steep 1.9km up to Salto do Cagarrao but well worth the effort. You'll get to see an additional smaller waterfall en route, and the grotto that Salto do Cagarrao sits in is really picturesque.

We found hiking sticks to be a huge advantage on the sometimes slippery trail. And we we're very happy to have started early in the day, to be in front of most other hikers. When we parked, there were only 3-4 other cars in the area, we had the trail to ourselves, and we enjoyed the falls with just ourselves or another pair of hikers. But by the time we hiked out, we passed a couple dozen hikers and found 30-40 cars in the parking lot. Morning also kept it cool, and you'll most certainly be warm enough on the steep uphill section of the hike.
