This was an amazing experience. We arrived to the trailhead relatively early (maybe 930 am) and begun our hike.

Parking is along a long narrow uphill road, the earlier you get there the closer you can park to the top.

This trail is a loop. The left takes you up a very long, very steep cobble stone road. The road goes through a cute little village where they had a “cold beer” stand.

We decided to go right. It was less paved and more of a traditional hike. Some steep parts, some steadier inclines. The day we went was very hot and humid, no breeze, so we were all very hot. There was lots of shade from the trees on this path.

The waterfall itself was very pretty. We arrived with only 2 people sitting on the rocks below. By the time we braved our way into the cold waterfall pool more people started arriving and it soon was overrun with tourists. Don’t get me wrong, the waterfall and swim was amazing, but if you get there at the wrong time good luck finding a spot to enjoy.

Walking back we went down the cobblestone road. That had no shade and was completely exposed to the sun. Very steep.

If I had to do it all over again I’d definitely still do this hike.

This is a nice short hike that I went to one morning. There is a very small parking lot near the start of the trail that can only fit 4-5 cars but there is more parking along the roads in the little town before you get to the trailhead. I got there at 9 in the morning and there were only 2 other cars in the parking lot.

I mostly had the trail to myself as I hiked. It is very well marked so you will know where you are going at all times. It is mostly shaded by the forestry so I didn’t get too hot. Wear shoes with good grip to them as there are wet parts that are slippery. The waterfall at the top is great. The signs will take you to the top of the waterfall but there are paths that take you to the bottom where you can swim if you want.

The hike up took me about 40 minutes and I spent about 20 minutes exploring near the waterfall and sitting to eat a snack. Then it was about 30 minutes back to my car.

We've hiked the Grand Canyon, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Yellowstone, the Tetons and all over the Rockies in Colorado for decades and this for me was one of my top five hikes ever. Maybe the unique and large waterfall at the end was just so different from the past options. We went up from Faial da Terra. The well marked path is at times easy and at times highly moderate but the footing can be VERY tricky at times. This is not a hike I would advise if you are not at least a little fit and definitely not without hiking shoes or boots. Also one to take with a little snack and some water. For us it was only about 50 minutes up including multiple photo breaks and a little less down but inside the sub-tropical forest can get pretty humid and sweaty. The moss on the rocks and the water and mud on the path can make for some very slippery areas. We were here on a Sunday in the middle of May and in total saw about a dozen people. We actually had some time at the waterfall where we had the place completely to ourselves. The waterfall and area is stunning. I would recommend anyone able and equipped to come here.

It was an incredibly beautiful hike, but to be honest quite busy with other tourists! The path is not too difficult and very well maintained, but you do need hiking shoes. We enjoyed the small waterfall and the abandoned village. The cobblestones can be slippery at wet days so please take care. At these days I would recommend to go the the village first before moving onto the waterfall.

Nice hike to a beautiful waterfall. Don't navigate to the waterfall itself on Google maps! It sends you to the middle of nowhere. When you are in the designated spot according to Google: don't descend the nearby "4x4 only"-road on foot, you'll have to climb back up again!

Instead navigate to "Trailhead - cascato do Prego" in the village of Faial da Terra and park your car there. It's a nice but sometimes steep hike to the waterfall. Took us (fit 35&40yo) about 30mins one way. Also quaint little village to have a nice espresso afterwards for only €0,50!

We did this trail with our six year old and our five month old.
It's a two km trail leading up to a beautiful waterfall of pure, ice cold water.
We averages 3km/hour and took a total of two hours to arrive back.
We listened to water flowing and cascading all the way through. Some arras could be better kept but the whole walk was beautiful and serene.

We did the route from Faial da Terra.
Perfectly indicated, without loss.
It was very pleasant, you go through areas with very beautiful vegetation. Sometimes it is a little steep and there is humidity, but it is very simple.
The waterfall is very beautiful, but it was very cold.
The route is quiet, but people gather at the waterfall.
You turn the other way and cross a semi-abandoned town that is beautiful.

If you are in the neighborhood, just go!! The hike from the village is really easy but at the same time really pretty.
When you reach the waterfall, if you are a bit handy, discover the full area by walking from rock to rock (be carefully this is really slippery). This will give you a lot of different and beautiful views.
On the way back take the Sanguinho path. This will guide you through a partly-abandonned village that is worth seeing. Just be prepared for the last part down. This is steed (but not undoable) but as this is on the rocks your knees might not be the happiest.

Beautiful hiking trail to the Salto do Prego waterfall. The trail is also a bit strenuous and the destination Sato do Prego makes for a relaxing break.

Note:
Hiking boots and food/drink for a nice picnic at the waterfall.
Take your time and just enjoy

The trail starts in the prettiest of valleys, and it's only a short hike up through pretty woodland on an easy enough path to the first waterfall. Unlike many of the waterfalls we visited on Sao Miguel, this one actually had plenty of water (always a good thing for a water fall!).

Look out for the free range chickens which emerge from the woods as you ascend the path. They are fearless, and may be after your picnic?

If you continue walking on the path upstream of the waterfall, you will find a second even lovelier waterfall after about 20 minutes (depending on your hiking speed). It actually took us about an hour (maybe two..time flies when you're having fun!) to reach the second falls, but that was because we chose to follow the river bed upstream, hopping over rocks, wading through pools, scrambling up banks. This was fun, but we did come across some large and very fresh land falls, so I wouldn't say it was ever so safe within the canyon walls. The path was perfectly good, and the second waterfall is well worth the extra hike. Hats off to the young man who hopped into his swimming pants and dived into the pool below the falls..the water was chilly! Note for hikers on hotter days .. this may be a good place to cool off :)

The return path is via the same route, and the option remains to visit the abandoned village.

Make sure you bring supplies. There are no hot dog vans or ice cream shops on this route
