- Steve MBolton, United Kingdom79 contributionsThoroughly enjoyed it.The weather wasn't the best so we sat inside for an interesting talk by the resident astronomer. Once it cleared up we got a chance to use the main telescope and to use binoculars for some more free form and dynamic observations. Well worth the cost and I would (indeed, have) recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in the night skyVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 November 2023
- Guide55835778669Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom5 contributionsBRILLIANT COUPLE OF HOURSWe booked up for an evening moonwatch session and we were not disappointed. First off the cost is £22.50 per adult but cheaper for children and concessions - absolutely worth the money!! We had a very knowledgeable gentleman called Harry who took our group. He gave us lots of information about space, the planets and the stars and suggested we downloaded an app called Stellarium to our phones which is brilliant if you haven’t used it before!! We were lucky enough to have the most beautifully clear evening to look through the amazing telescope onsite. We saw incredible views of the andromeda galaxy, the moon and pleiades. Harry was happy to answer any questions he helped us get incredible photos on our phones. There is a real treat at the end of the session but I’m not going to give it away!! My mind was blown by all the new facts and information. I literally could have stayed there all night!! There are plenty of pairs of binoculars to use should you wish and a free tea/coffee/ hot chocolate machine at the back of the room. If you are a novice stargazer like me this will blow your mind, or if you just want a better view of the sky from a dark sky area this is for you! Harry, we can’t thank you enough for the fun - we will definitely be returning for another session!!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 November 2023
- linda c7 contributionsAmazing star gazing experience with expert guide .Amazing experience . Harry our presenter was enthusiastic and gave us a fascinating 2 hour tour of the skies . I learned a lot . We were very lucky in that as we arrived it was snowing but the clouds then cleared for a while and we were able to see the moons of Jupiter and the craters of the moon through the powerful telescope .highly recommend .Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 November 2023
- DiCotterrell8 contributionsCotterrell Family night for dad’s birthday. We visited as a family on their astronomy for beginners event. Roy was fab. He was engaging, friendly, knowledgeable and really helpful with equipment and pointing out the planets, moon and stars. Our night was pretty cloudy but it did lift for spells. I have never seen so many stars even though it wasn’t a clear night. The whole family was engaged and found the night really interesting. Was honestly such a cool night. Will definitely come back to do another event and just look up at such a wonderful sky. Thanks Roy for a really inclusive and informative experience. Has your glove turned up? Haha. Wonderful night.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 December 2023
- Ricky MGloucester, United Kingdom29 contributionsSimply the best!Had an amazing experience with Rita and Roy, the Astronomers, who were funny, friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. Did the 9-11pm tour, which was incredible. Travelled up from Gloucester, staying in Durham, so was about an hour away. Well worth it. I'd recommend this to anyone, seeing the sky likes you've never seen it before was amazing. Thank you so much!Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 December 2023
- Kim SNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom77 contributionsAwesomeWe came for the astrophotography beginners class. I would say I am a beginner with normal photography, never mind astro so I really enjoyed the learning experience. Chris has a wealth of experience and was a genuinely lovely man. He has an absolute abundance of knowledge and he was so adaptable to any situation. Any question was answered, and it felt like he enjoyed what he was doing which also helped. We got lucky with the sky and the weather (albeit cold of course) and Chris helped us take some incredible photos. Everything he said made sense. I would like to come back again, possibly for some star gazing.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 January 2024
- petermackie12 contributionsGREAT!We were at the hotel for three nights and booked three different sessions, one each night. While there was some overlap the presenters, Jimmy and Rita were wonderful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic, going out of their way to tailor what they presented to broaden and extend our experience. Although the weather was so cloudy we could do no practical observations, we learned a great deal and came away very happy.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 March 2024
- Becca HChesterfield, United Kingdom1 contributionOut of this world star gazingFantastic evening. Roy was our astronomer for the evening and he made it a fun , fascinating and very knowledgeable night learning about our night skies. The forecast was rain and it was quite the cloudy night however 15 minutes before the end the cloud cleared and we had the most amazing star filled sky , so certainly worth sticking around for. My kids 14 and 12 were still fascinated and wide awake at 11.15 looking through the binoculars and telescopes in awe of what they could see. Certainly worth a trip.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 April 2024
- Tori M7 contributions#RoyTheLegendI booked the Dark Skies Discovery session as a family of 4 for my dads birthday. Roy was our Astronomer and kept us very entertained whilst teaching us new facts about astronomy - we were all very impressed at his clear passion for the subject. I would advise anyone not to leave early, despite clouds in the sky, as at the very end the skies cleared and Roy stayed a Futher 30 mins and set up both Telescopes so that we could see all we'd learned about. 10/10 experience.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 April 2024
- Kate M2 contributionsDO NOT LEAVE HALFWAY THROUGH A CLOUDY NIGHTAn absolutely fantastic experience. We started at 9pm, it was a cold and windy day and had just become quite cloudy overhead to begin. Roy, who was leading the session, had a lot of optimism that it would clear up. While waiting for the skies to clear, Roy talked to us about his work, things to spot while star gazing and had a catalogue of knowledge and information that the whole group was fascinated with. While I assumed this time may have been spent star gazing, I truly believe that to fully appreciate what you were looking for you needed all this knowledge and information so it does not feel like that time was ‘wasted’. Within the last 45 minutes the sky cleared up and the view was incredible. Roy was able to show us different galaxies through the telescope, he even stated an extra 20 minutes due to missing all that star gazing time beforehand. Highly recommended experience.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 April 2024

My partner booked our Dark Sky experience some time back and we were due to attend on a Saturday evening in October. Obviously we understand that currently things can change with changing guidelines and laws being issued by the government. We were notified by email the NIGHT BEFORE we were due to attend that our slot was not full. There were no new guidelines for over 2 weeks so the staff knew that they would have to cancel some people well in advance but waited until the previous day. This obviously was disappointing but we accepted the fact and called the following day to see what the options were for re-booking to be met by a very rude lady on the telephone with little compassion about this fact. “Call is to rearrange when you want to,” was the answer so I did to be told you actually must email. Disappointed again I did so and now over 3 weeks has passed, emailed twice with no response.
In the current challenging times we all understand that service levels may not quite be where they normally would but common courtesy and upholding obligations once you have received payments are not things that should be dismissed.
At the time of writing this I am still unable to make contact to re-book the desired date (government guidelines permitting) and I have had not contact. Service like this is remembered long after a pandemic has passed and it can be the difference between supporting businesses and not.

Firstly, I need to say that I have no interest in the night sky, but my husband, on the other hand has! Since it was his birthday, we went along to one of these evenings. Unfortunately, it was rainy and cloudy and so we were unable to go outside and 'appreciate' the apparently wonderful sky. As you can imagine, the resultant 2-hour session involved listening to Martin (who seems very knowledgeable) answering visitors questions. I found it very boring if I'm honest. The offer of free hot drinks was hospitable, but no one could access these, as we were so squashed into our seats. There were 27 adults squeezed into a shed, meaning there was very little room for comfort and you certainly couldn't move from your seat. I wondered what the maximum number is for these events. Had it been a clear evening, I think the experience would have been extremely different. Some you win, some you lose! My husband, who's a keen astronomer didn't really learn anything new - it was a shame that it wasn't a clear night.

What a fab, unassuming place. So surprising as you would not think of looking here for a place to look at the night sky. What an unexpected find !! Even if you have no interest in the sky this may be the one time you do find it to be an experience you will remember. There is so much out there and yes you can see star formations with the naked eye but using a pair of binoculars and or a telescope you cannot deny that there is so much to view out there. I will admit I did have my curiosity tweaked and will look into a cheap but effective telescope to see what else I can find. The staff are friendly and very informative..it is even bettr if you combine a meal and a night staying at the Battlesteads hotel also but if not, still go along to the observatory to be amazed. With all the planets out there surely we cannot be alone ?? Go along and find out for yourself..

Jimmy was our astronomer for the night and he was out of this world, an absolutely stellar host!
His explanations of how things work in the night sky and how things work, from orbits to gravity were super easy to understand.
We really liked the way he used his laser to point out objects in the night sky and he was able to explain not only their names but also the myths and folklore behind each constellation.
Highlight of the evening was being able to view Saturn and it’s magnificent rings through the 11” telescope.
We didn’t try the free vegetable soup from the machine, nor the coffee that one lady gave the observatory 2 stars for.
Thoroughly recommend and definitely want to go back again to learn more. Thanks Jimmy.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stargazing experience at Battlesteads! On a relatively rainy October day, we were very fortunate to have clear skies for the evening. Martin was a very friendly, welcoming and knowledgable teacher who was patient and open to answering any questions posed to him. He was especially considerate of the current covid measures, ensuring the provisions of sanitizer and general practices were in place so we could stay as safe as possible during our time there. He also gave us many hints and tips to continue are stargazing from home! Thank you very much

Sadly the it was mostly cloudy this evening but we saw fabulous images of the moon at the beginning of the evening.
When the clouds rolled in our astronomer James gave us a fascinating and informative illustrated talk. He was enthusiastic and conveyed the beauty and mystery of the universe really well.
The facilities were small but perfectly adequate and we would definitely recommend this experience.

Attended last night - 30/0/22 - and met Roy. What an enthusiastic, knowledgeable person. He rightly predicted that at 10pm the clouds would disappear. Excellent app - they did. We saw Milky Way with naked eye and brilliant sightings of Jupiter and Mercury through the telescope. He was particularly careful to include a little boy there with his mum and dad. I wish we lived nearer to attend more often.

We upgraded to a lodge room which was like a tardis. Cosy underfloor heating, high ceilings with windows in the roof to see stars if blind left open. Huge bathroom with lovely toiletries. The tasting menu was delicious but all food was very tasty. A warm welcome by staff from all disciplines from cleaners, reception and restaurant staff made the experience all the better without being overly formal.

U finish work at eight could we join group after ? Or I s it start at with pm?

You won't have a problem but let them know you'll be late. However if you are coming to one of the very specialist sessions - say on astrophotography - and are a complete newbie, I wouldn't recommend coming late. But for a more general session - you'll not miss out too much. The general session I went to started off with a talk and the hands-on was much later

Hi,
We live in Manchester and are coming for a short visit to Northumberland, My son wants to be an astrophysicists and would love to take him to an observatory. What if we have booked tickets and it is a cold rainy day ?
Thanks

unfortunately you take that chance although the area and building is small there is something of interest and very knowledgeable and friendly staff available, the night we, as a group, visited, our coach was due to leave at 11:30pm and up to 10pm there was a very low cloudbase, at 10pm the sky suddenly became very clear, why not stay at the Battlesteads hotel, and stay a couple of days, not only can you stay in the hotel but they have lodgers out the back near the observatory, and no I do not work for them so cannot comment on the accommodation. I hope, during your visit, you will have a clear night and an enjoyable visit and hope I have been some help.
