I love checking out traditional onsen villages and Shibu Onsen is an awesome one to visit! The hot spring village is more than a thousand years old and is characterised by cobblestone lanes and quaint little wooden ryokans. We didn’t stay here as rooms were...More

Definitely the highlight of our trip, and the most exciting and anticipated segment of our second trip to Japan. When we started researching the Snow Monkeys, we realized that rather that at Mt Fuji, they were in the prefecture of Nagano, close to a little...More

Very few tourists on the street and most restaurants are closed. Public obsens are very small and not inviting.

The so called old town of Shibu Onsen is very very disappointing. Rather than traditional old warehouses, there is a row of derelict run down buildings. In between there are a few small restaurants and the onsens but there are areas in Japan that are...More

Shibu Onsen is a lovely littl town which has 9 public baths on a little street, each supposedly aiding in a different ailment. We only tried #9 as the rest are open only to those staying in hotels or Ryokans with the keys to open...More

Nice little place! Feels very old. Cute walking round the narrow streets. There are foot baths along the road. You can use the town public onsens. Great place to stay if you want to stay in a traditional ryokan with Onsen abundant! And to see...More

If u ve been to other onsen towns this one pales in comparison. It's really quiet on a Saturday with less than 2-3 shops of interest. Maybe just stay a night to visit the monkey park and that's about it. Too quiet and boring

I have read up about how great it was but we arrived when there is not a single soul in town. No restaurants was open and every shop was closed. Not sure if it is some public holiday where all the shop are closed. I...More

A well appointed comparatively small hotel in the Nagarno prefecture, the beds were traditional & a little hard, but beautifully dressed in sleek doona's, a table with floor seating, a little sewing kit, toothbrushes, comb, & sweets were amongst the offerings in the room, the...More

I could stay here forever... Very exclusive place and away from the city crowd. Super fresh country air with natural onsens everywhere. Onsen number 9 is a must try! The miraculous healing properties is REAL. Walking distance to Tamamura sake brewery. Convenient bus transport system...More

My husband also has tattoos, we also thought it could pose a problem, however he had no difficulty accessing facilities, we just made sure the appropriate people were asked for permission, after that there was no problem
