Beautiful scenery

Beautiful scenery during the drive along the river. It's very cold during winter, do dress very warmly.

We experienced a beautiful clear Autumn morning. There had been enough snow to provide beautiful scenery and both the gondola and chairlift were operating. It was midweek and sufficiently off-season that the crowds were limited. We also found the visitor centre very helpful.

I visited Kamikawa Sounkyo Gorge in Oct 16 , took a cable car up the first section, the view was great as we are going up, snow fall when we are approaching the cable car stn. That is NOT ALL you must the the kurodake chair to the next mountain top where you will be greeted with a beautiful scene... More

We stayed in Asahikawa and drove to Sounkyo after breakfast. It took only around an hour plus and the roads were easy to drive. We took the gondolla to the mid-level and the view was breathtaking. Then we took the chairlift ropeway further up and it's exciting but also safe. The scenary was even better up there, what you need... More

Save yours strength and take the cable car/chairlift ropeway combo. Then it's not an easy hike (my iphone says 113 floors I climbed over 10000 steps, so it's not un-steep), some steps still covered in snow July 15 (although mum, aged 61, could achieve in Melissa jelly shoes..but she's a bit of a pro). THE VIEW! so worth it. SO... More

I just wish we were there in the right season. But nevertheless, the views are breathtaking. We got there by public transport without much difficulty with adequate research beforehand. Hike of about 2.5hours maximum to the peak. Hiking down probably will take longer because of the uneven rocks! Becareful to gain a steady foothold! Totally worth it, will visit again... More

Absolutely stunning in winter with the gorge covered entirely in white powder snow. There is also an ice waterfall festival to enjoy in winter. A soak in the onsen while staring at snow is heaven!

Go for Ice Festival. Very pretty and the fireworks on weekends are a bonus. The valley also has some spectacular scenery and a terrific cable car - the Sounkyo Ropeway. Amazing views of the gorge from the cable car. At the top of the ropeway is a small ski area. You may be lucky enough to see wildlife, deers for... More

We stayed one night and at 8:30 the town puts on a five minute firework display that really makes the stay special. Worth the trek to this beautiful part of Hokkaido, from where you can explore the top of Kurodake and that ridge of mountains.

All the way from Asahikawa to see the gouge. Not super fantastic but it's nice if its winter. I was there in mid June si just greenery. The waterfalls nearby is just so so not as great as some review stated.
