If you get a chance, it is worth the 90 minute drive each way. Recommend going early in the morning to avoid the tour bus traffic and be able to take lots of pictures. We have been several times and never tire of the beauty...More

The gassho-zukuri architecture, which translates as "praying hands" is designed to speed up losing the snow in winter and the roof is constructed without nails using wooden beams tied with rope
