Visited this place during Japan's summer holidays. You'll see a lot of families with children in swimming costumes. The view is too beautiful! The waters are crystal clear and very cooling. Perfect for the summer! I drove to this place from Otaru (no tolls along the scenic coastal road). There are buses to this place too but not direct. I... More

We chanced upon cape shokotan while traveling along the sea becoz we missed cape kamui and we did not want to go back! It provides a nice view of the sea and some caves. If you are adventurous enough, you can also hike down the cliff ( steps are pretty steep) but it's a good view at the bottle with... More

A 30 minute drive from Cape Kamui, and only very slightly off the main road direct to Sapporo, you can access the pedestrian tunnel to the Shakotan view point. Basic facilities are available and paths to higher viewpoints start from the same carpark. In total a 45-minute detour from the direct route between Kamui and Sapporo.

Beautiful view, but probably not the ideal destination with two under-5s: the walk down the cliff to the beach is a little strenuous (but not dangerous), there's no shelter on the beach, and the sea was just a bit too cold, even in early August. With slightly older children this would have been amazing, don't forget to bring snorkels and... More
