I was in the area visiting Hiraizumi, a UNESCO site. This was my first stop among the other attractions and Takkoku no Iwaya was definitely a highlight. There is a parking lot across the street. There is an entrance fee. You can freely walk around and even inside the temple. I knew about this temple for a while and seeing it in person was amazing. It's just as beautiful in person as you see in the photos.

This temple was built to honor Bishamonten, a god of war, more than 1,200 years ago. It's a wooden structure built across a recess/cave in a cliff-face. Although this was a common structure at the time, there are few such temples left in Japan. This one has recently been restored (we also visited 10 years ago), so it's looking it's best. Be sure to look for the "great Buddha" carved onto the cliff face to the left of the temple (as you face it). On the hillside above the shrine's gate are 3 other traditional structures, that make this a pleasant place to wander and soak up the atmosphere.

A temple built in hard rock, but it's priest can have some flexible mind. The note on the bullien board says he is going to give a lecture under the title of Pokemon. The signboard says "Help us protect the holy place from the Pokemon. Catch them". I am almost tempted to stay to hear his lecture, especially after seeing its Buddha on the rock lost his body due to the earthquake. Maybe the priest is desperate enough to do anything for its recovery. The place is worth visiting.

It's located between Genbi-kei and Hiraiizumi historical site.
Few people, very calm atomosphere.
Time table of public transportation is not suitable for sightseeing here.
Possible to ask a ticket counter staff to call taxi when you return if you go there by public bus.
Almost tourists seems to come by taxi or rent-a-car.

Some of the historybehind this place is interesting but you should be done with this within 30 minutes. Don't forget the Buddha carved in the cliff in the back!

This temple does not take that long to visit with its main feature being the Buddha carved into the cliff face. Nevertheless it played an important role in the history of this area and has impressive features. We were driving so the trip some 15 minutes from Hiraizumi was not an issue but if local buses were required your time may be better spent in some of the more significant sites around Hiraizumi if your time is limited.

The quiet serene feeling you get here is something astounding. Here you cannot harm animals (including insects), consume food, or have bad feelings/thoughts (according to the pamphlet). This is a place to rid yourself of your internal suffering, even for a moment or two. The breeze makes itself present through the leaves and grass surrounding the temple. Nature rules here as well as silence. It takes some time to get here and leave, so plane accordingly and know the bus schedule.

On what possible level this could be considered to be a 'cave temple', as it is usually called, I will never know. A small part of it is built on to the cliff face, and the cliff may possibly form the back wall of the temple, though memory doesn't serve me that well. A cliff is not a cave though, is it.
The temple is a 30 minute bike ride out of town - it was raining when I went but I suspect it'd be pleasant in the sunshine. Getting bikes from the place near the station (500 yen for 2 hours) allows you to store your baggage all day for free (coin lockers in the station cost 500 yen!).
That said, if I wasn't expecting something more interesting, I'd probably have thought it was quite nice, so hopefully by dispelling the myth, I am helping others to enjoy it more!
