The Kerama Islands were designated as the thirty-first national park on March 5 (Coral Day) in 2014. It is a group of islands consisting of a little over 30 islands of various sizes and numerous reefs and located approximately 40 km west of Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. This national park has the land area of 3,520 ha and the ocean area of 90,475 ha, and the majority is the sea area. It boasts various landscapes of the land and the sea such as the scenery of crystal clear ocean, dense coral reefs of various kinds, breeding grounds of humpback whales, landscape of the archipelago, white sand beaches, sea cliffs, and vegetation unique to windswept terrain. Access from the main island of Okinawa (Naha City Tomari Port) is approximately 35 to 50 minutes by a high-speed ferry, and diving or snorkeling in the gorgeous sea called Kerama Blue as well as whale watching in winter can be enjoyed.
