I’ve been here twice, both times in the fall. Both times the colors were spectacular. I especially loved the bright yellow ginkgo leaves behind the zen garden and covering the paths. But all the reds, oranges and yellows were wonderful. Be sure and climb up into the temple “gate” to look down upon the beautiful gardens and pond. While there, we paid a little extra to go through a formal Japanese tea ceremony which was really lovely. It’s something everyone should do while in Japan! OR you can have “regular” tea while sitting outside the temple, looking over the gardens. Just outside the temple and inside the main temple there are antiques for sale. After the tea ceremony I was able to purchase a “used” complete tea ceremony set in a mahogany case. It was a real good deal", but still a bit expensive. I was also able to find some beautiful trays and other hand-made items in the shop in front of the temple. Also be sure and look for the "owl's" face on the rock in the pond behind the temple.

This small temple in Kawaba village located in the northern mountains of Gunma is simply amazing. The temple is literally drowning in flowers. I visited in late spring and the sakura were still in bloom. The priest's wife offered us tea and we got to enjoy not only a rock garden, but also beautiful landscaping, falling cherry blossoms and fresh air! This is a must-see. A Japanese friend drove us here, but if you can manage to find your way here in Gunma in spring (which is a nature and onsen lover's paradise), drop by! You won't be disappointed. It's like being in a floral paradise! No kidding!
