最澄が鏡山１２峰の一つ、星ケ峰の山麓に開いた「西光寺」が、信長の一連の天台宗襲撃の一環として焼失させられ廃寺となってしまった。その西光寺があった場所にある宝篋印塔で全国に数ある同塔の中でもこの塔は堂々と国の重文にも指定されているものです。高さは約２ｍ超、周囲は最大で１．８ｍと云う立派なものです。石の角には「梟」の彫刻が刻まれている珍しいものです。鎌倉時代後期、西暦１３００年前後の作と云われています。一連の竜王町内の史跡探求コースに組み込まれて参拝されるのが良いかと思われます。又、すぐ隣には、これも又重文指定を受けている「石灯篭」が屋根付きの祠に収まっています。これは西光寺の鎮守寺であった八柱(やばしら)神社の社宝で、高さは宝篋印塔よりも高く２．８ｍもあります。室町時代初期の作で八角形の珍重な石灯篭でした。
