Beginning in 1998 the idea was that artists take empty residential houses and turn them into works of art. There are seven sites dotted around the village and they're all interesting in their own way. My favourite houses were Kadoya, a 200 year old residence...More

Each one a gem - to be enjoyed in small bites in the small town setting - very relaxing. You get tickets for all and then stamped at each place when you enter.

For starters, the whole tour is only around ¥1000 ($10) and you visit some really cool places. The tour is nice since the locations are spread out, it's get you to explore the town that the tour is in. Admittedly unless you're into modern/super artsy...More

This is a collection of a few houses that were converted into pieces of art. It is interesting to see and has a mild fun factor, but unfortunately this pleace also thinks of itself as being too important to allow you to take any photos...More

Very nice project, a bit expensive ticket but worth it. Other option is just to stroll around by walking or on a bike and take a look from the outside.

A series of Japanese houses and shrines that have been taken over and transformed by various contemporary artists. Each is different but all are surprising.

Yes I agree with mickyhk, Ando is the architect designer of the Benesse House. There is the Ando museum in the same vicinity as the Art House project. The Art a House project is a series of old houses that have been... More

I don't know any other way of getting there...but it's worth it. I stayed on Shikoku but would recommend staying on Naoshima.
