Claimed to be 1800 years dating back, it has connection with shinto gods and godesses. Place is very tranquil with high pine trees , cidars , amazing one pair of wedded cidars. This place is slso venue for takachiho kagura( god’s masks performance.

Partially because of the ties between the local area and tales from the Kojiki, this local shrine has maintained an active tradition of Kagura, or god-dance. During certain times of year, dances are preformed every night at different locations in order to bless the harvest. At other times the dances are only at Takachiho shrine. You can arrange to see it at your lodging and many of the local ryokans offer shuttle service to the shrine for their guests.
The performance lasts for about an hour and generally includes 3-4 dances. The dancing lively and each dance tells a story. The cost for attendance is actually a donation to the shrine.
I HIGHLY recommend coming to see it. This is an aspect of Japanese culture that even most Japanese never see up close.

An easy walk from Hotel Takachiho, the shrine is atop a long steep set of stairs. Massive cedars tower over the shrine complex so that darkness prevails even in the light of day. The ancient trees are atmospheric and evocative of the legends of the gods. The most famous are the two wedded cedars which are tied together. When we visited monks were sweeping up the leaves from the deciduous trees and we assume this is a daily task in autumn to keep the grounds pristine.
The several shrine buildings fit perfectly in this dark natural setting, with the shadows from the trees playing on their surfaces. The bleached out, unpainted wood blends with the wooded grove and the whole place takes on a magical air. If you walk beside and behind the buildings you will be treated to some spectacular, but very time-warn wooden sculptures in addition to the carvings on the front of the buildings and under the eaves.
Kagura Hall is at the far end of the precincts of the shrine. It is here that the nightly Kagura performances occur. We were lucky enough to be there when a special private afternoon performance was taking place. We looked in the side window of the building to the dressing room of the dancers. From there we were invited by the performers to photograph and we could also watch the dance from the side through the dressing room onto the stage. Very special!

Roaming to the shrine need 10 min from Takachiho bus station and electric assisted bicycle is not necessary. The ceremonial dance performed every evening at 20:00, and 700 yen per person. The staff will give the instructions with English, Chinese, Korea for description the mysterious story of God. Everyone can enjoy the Dance with 4 part without a word.

A nice temple with spectacular cedar trees. In winter, they perform traditional dances telling about the origin of Japan and the legends of Amaterasu, 700 JPY at 8pm (not sure how many times a week though).
It's well worth a visit after spending time visiting Takachiho gorges. If you're a runner, do mot miss MarathonTei in the main street leading off from the temple entrance. Udon and surprising decoration and owner !

화려하거나 웅장한 신사는 아니었지만 주변의 맑은 공기와 신사를 압도하는 크기의 몇백년씩 된 거대한 나무가 인상적이었습니다. 오히려 자연의 위대함 앞에 겸손함 같아서 다른 곳에서 보았던 거대한 규모의 신사나 눈에 잔상을 감길 것 같이 강렬한 붉은 색의 신사보다 더 신사 같다고 느꼈습니다.
Takachiho Shrine was not grand or eye-cathcing like some of the other shrines I have visited, but I think the understatedness was what made Takachiho Shrine more memorable. With its giant trees and forest around it, it felt humble, more shrine-like if you ask me. I recommend this shrine very strongly.

We checked out the shrine on our way to the gorge. The cedar trees did it!! Beautiful and super old sacred trees and beautiful path through the cedar tree forest to reach the gorge (a bit challenging: stairs!). Takachiho was so nice we were inspired to write a blogpost about it!

This can be combined as part of the gorge if you are prepared to hike between the two. A path from the gorge comes up at the back of the shrine. Easier to park down at the bottom of the gorge and do the gorge and optionally walk up. There are car parks at the top and those that come by public transport can hike down to the gorge after finding the side path, left at the back. I did notice the event posted up which has been mentioned below. We missed it.

We stopped here on the way to the gorge. It was well worth the visit, I personally found it more interesting than the crowded gorge. Although not decorated in bright colours, the shrine does leave a strong impression, in part because of the grove of old trees that surround it (the oldest cedar tree is around 700 years old). Very enjoyable.

The place was featured with very tall trees, one of them was 800 years old, and was grown to 55 meters in height. Nude color tone of the wooden shrine made it look so peaceful and solemn.

We are thinking of visiting Takachiho and Takachiho Shrine around 8-9 December. I would like to know when is the Yokagura performance will be on? Is it every night? And at the Shrine? Also, what time does it start and end, and is there an admission fee? Thank you!
