We did the Island Tour with YES Yakushima, and had a great experience. Steve was responsive over email and helped us reserve the ferry from Kagoshima to Yakushima, which we really appreciated.

The tour itself was excellent, and the guide Hiroko made it a great experience. She took into account our preferences and was always happy to stop if we wanted to see something closer up. She provided towels and bags for our wet things so we could use the Hirauchi sea spa, and took us to a beautiful spot for a picnic lunch. YES Yakushima couldn’t cater to our vegan diet, so we brought our own food, but Hiroko was happy to share green tea and some vegan snacks.

Doing this tour meant we were able to explore and see lots of areas of the island that would have been very difficult without renting our own car.

Thank you Hiroko and Steve for making it a great day!

Overall, we had a great time with our first tour guide, Takashi, but unfortunately would not recommend AT ALL touring with Steve, the British expat.

The Good:
* Fast communication
* On-time pickup from hotel in the morning
* On our first planned day of hiking, it rained a lot the day before and the trail we had intended to take was closed. If we had been on our own, we would have a hard time figuring out what to do next! Since we were with our YES tour guide, he was able to redirect us to a different hike which had fewer river crossings and was still open. In addition, that hike had parts that were quite overgrown and I'm not sure we would have persevered if not for our tour guide! He also carried a hot water thermos up the mountain so we could drink tea/coffee at the summit. Thank you to Takashi for being an awesome tour guide, we were able to have a wonderful hike despite the rainy conditions!!

The Bad:
* For our second day of hiking, we planned on visiting a national park that contained 'Princess Mononoke Forest'. Although the forest was truly beautiful and awe-inspiring, my memory is unfortunately forever tainted by the political soapboxing of our guide Steve.
* From the beginning, in the car, he started advocating that we sign his petition to prevent Yakushima airport from developing a jet runway (they are prop plane only right now). Personally, I don't enough about local politics to be signing any petitions for or against anything.
* Then, he had a strong anti-PRC pro-Taiwan stance, but his rational was quite bizarre, for example he said Taiwan should be independent because China 'only' got the island in the 1600s, 300 years ago (that's longer than the US has been a country).
* It reached a point where I, a Chinese American, became uncomfortable because he made broad statements implying Han culture produced weak women (we are not weak...) and that the indigenous people of Japan have stronger females.
* Near the end, another guest asked him if he had had any notable tourists/customers come on his tour. He mentioned that he had had several ambassadors, including the Trump-administration American ambassador to Japan. He then made fun of the guy for not knowing much about Japanese history. Look, maybe the guy doesn't have the knowledge / education that he is supposed to have in that position, but I still think it's unprofessional to make fun of him later.

Walking with native english Steve, we learnt all about the Sugi’s (not Cedar!) in the mountains, the reasons for trees to be 7000 years old and as a bonus the history of Japan. We had amazing pictures during the hike as well. Highly recomend this hike for anybody that can walk 6 km up-down-up-down 👍

We are very glad we found Steve and Yes Yakushima. Yes helped us book a wonderful Ryokan and tours for our whole family on Yakushima. They also helped us book a rental vehicle that picked us up at the airport.

Working with Steve, he provided us with hotel and ryokan options within our price range and suggested various tours that we thoroughly enjoyed (river kayaking and water shower walk).

Even though we now know Yakushima quite well, I would use Yes Yakushima again without hesitation.

Thanks Steve!!

We did two tours through YES Y and this enabled us to get the very useful hydrofoil reservation which we greatly appreciated.

The tours were hiking and they were moderate in terms of strain (would be tough if a person were out of shape or had a back or knee problem) and **absolutely stunning** beautiful national parks. We loved the bento lunch and the information given about the wilderness, the history.

Yakushima is a remote place compared to the usual visits people make to Japan, but was the most beautiful, and memorable of our trip.

We want to come back in 2024 to Yakushima again to go all arond the island, especially west coast, the only part of the island we did not see in our 4 day stay.

A big thank you to Steve and his team for organising our days during our 3 night stay on the beautiful island of Yakushima.

We are a father and daughter. Making the initial arrangements was easy by email with Steve who was immediately responsive and helpful when we found out that our ferry had been rerouted to Miyanoura port (from Anbo). He arranged vegetarian lunches for us with no difficulty.

Our guide for the hikes was Kouki. He is a kind, gentle and knowledgeable man very much in tune with the island that he loves. He was the perfect guide as he carries out mountain rescue activities during his spare time and knows the forests very well.

On our first day Kouki picked us up from Miyanoura and took us to the Yakusuki land tour. Because of the rerouting of the ferry we did not reach the start of the tour until just before 3pm. Kouki's initial plan was for us to do the 80 minute hike (there are 30, 50, 80 and 150 minute trails) but he readily agreed to extend this to the 150 minute one despite the fact it was about 6 pm before we finished. I had found it difficult to gauge from the reviews how hard I would find this as the reviewers tend not to disclose their ages / level of fitness. I am a 56 year old man who is overweight but with a reasonable level of fitness. I found it extremely challenging but not impossible. I was glad I had hired hiking boots and a walking pole. My 25 year old daughter skipped through very easily but she has a lot of hiking experience in the Far East. I had 2 or 3 minor slips. Remember it rains a lot on Yakushima and is humid in June. I was pleased to have finished by the end of the end of the hike. Kouki's tea and amazaki drinks along the way provided a most welcome break.

On our second day our guide was Hiroko who took us around the island with a particular focus on the waterfalls. Her English is a little stronger than Kouki's and she provided us with a great deal of information about the island and its history. We very much enjoyed our day with her and the opportunity to get to know this magical island a little better.

On our third day Kouki took us to Shiratani Unsuikyo. I had been particularly apprehensive about this hike having read the reviews. We again had the most amazing day. We could not undertake the circular tour because of the heavy rain but we did make it to the moss forest famous as the inspiration for the Princess Mononoke anime film which had been our ambition. I think because we went the shorter route and because I had been able to learn from my experiences on the earlier hike I actually found this a little easier than Yakusuki. Still a considerable challenge, but no falls this time. Again my daughter found it easy.

All in all this was probably the best part of our month long trip to Japan (see also my review of the Sankara hotel). I cannot thank Steve, Kouki and Hiroko enough for making this so special.

In Yakushima, you can do a lot of activities by yourself but when it comes to walking the trails of the national park, we will advise you to go with a guide. It is what we did as we walked the whole day in the Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine with Steve of the Yakushima English Service (YES). Steve has a wealth of knowledge and shared a lot of information about the island, flora, mammal, birds and specifically the history of Japan and of East Asia. And not to mention the least, he speaks English. Thanks Steve for the great journey through history and Japanese culture.

Yakushima is an amazing place. It is less English friendly than other parts of Japan, though, and for that reason I was very thankful to have had Steve set things up. There was no extra cost incurred, and he went above and beyone and helped with a car, and two different places. He also helped with some meals and suggestions about what to do, and booked us for the ferry when we left. Can't say enough nice things and would tell anyone visiting that there is no downside of using YES Yakushima for your visit.

An exceptional visit to beautiful to beautiful Yakushima was enabled by superior logistical support by Steve at Yes Yakushima. We did the island tour one day and Mt Kuromi tour the next day and saw my favorite Rhododendron Degronianum var. Yakushimanum in bloom. The guides were excellent as were our accommodations at La Isla Tasse. Our hydrofoil reservations were perfect.
