The beach is beautiful, however, it is dirty full of plastic and trash in the sand.
The village is super simple and poorly maintained.
If it's raining then don't waste your time.
It's a shame the country's lack of care for the island and beach.

A large group of us went over to Tokashiki Island to go camping. The weekend was absolutely amazing! The ferry ride over was gorgeous. We took the longer one because we had a car with us. But it was relaxing and great. They even have rooms on the bottom floor with mats where you have to take your shoes off and you can sleep on the mats. Once there the bus to Ahren Beach was easy to find, and as soon as we walked off the bus we were at the beach and the entrance to our camp site, Youth Travel Village. The campsite is very small. We were lucky to be the first ones there, otherwise we would have been forced to squeeze our tents between others. We were literally a 30 second walk to the beach. The water is clear blue and absolutely gorgeous. Great for snorkeling! We also hiked up to Forest Park Cabin, it was hot on the way up, but the view and the breeze at the top made it worth it! There were a few shops right by the beach and the food was great! The mango smoothies were delicious and refreshing too! We slept on the beach the second night and it was the BEST decision we could have made! I have never seen so many stars in my life, it was unbelievable!

I wanted to spend a half day at Aharen Beach but was worried about transportation on the island after getting there by ferry. Turns out that it was really easy. At Tomari port, I caught the 9am express ferry to the island, which arrived in 35 minutes. There was a shuttle bus awaiting passengers, and the driver was holding a sign saying "Aharen Beach" and the return timing. Simply board the bus, pay 400 yen per way, and take note of the 2 return timings: 2.30pm for the 3.30pm ferry and one later one which I cannot remember now. There was also an option for a one-hour island bus tour which departs Aharen Beach at 1.30pm, but I did not go for that. As it was low season, I found that I had the entire beach to myself, before more tourists started pouring in close to noon. The waters were clear and really clean. I got to try stand-up paddling and I saw that there were snorkel sets for rental too. There was only one cafe which was open, but I had a good curry rice lunch with local beer and ice-cream. There was also free wifi at the showers/toilet/lockers lodge a stone's throw from the beach, which was really great. I returned to the port slightly after 2.30pm, and caught the 3.30pm slow ferry back to Naha. What an unforgettable visit!

We already travelled on many islands, in Thailand, Malaysia or Greece. Tokashiki have indeed beautiful beaches (only 2, but splendid, especially when the one-day tourist are gone, at the end of the day.

We were a bit disappointed by the marine wildlife, quiet poor in comparison with other snorkeling spots. The water in incredibly clear, but excepted one sea turtle and a few clown fishes, there's not so much to see.

Be aware that there are few restaurants too, and the places to sleep are very simple guesthouses, with japanese-style rooms not always incredibly comfortable. It is a rough destination, which can be cool but it's better to know it before deciding to spent a lot of time on Tokashiki.

Enjoy !

A nice day soaking in the beauty of nature and what it offers at the island.
We got to the tomari ferry building at 8.15am to get our 9am fast boat ticket. Fill in a simple form and the English speaking person at the counter will answer all your queries.
As we took the slow boat back, we could not purchase the return ticket at the tomari ferry building but only at the island when we were there - as this slow boat was huge, there's no problem getting a ticket back.
Our beach of choice was Aharen. Transport to and from was via Bus, very convenient. The couple of hours we spent at the beach was magical. The clear water, soft sand, great views made this day trip unforgettable.

Don't be fooled by the lifeguard sitting there and no red flag....every year people die swimming on this beach. My husband and I visited in September, we are both strong swimmers and visit many beaches for snorkelling. When we arrived the bus driver said the waves were a bit high so the water wasn't so clear....there was no mention of danger. We soon realised that swimming was extremely dangerous, rocks were hitting our legs and my husband was bowled over by big waves. After researching this beach (Aharen) we found that every year people have died here. Also, there is no way to get to the other beach so we were stuck here for the day, unable to swim due to the high waves. We think they should have flags showing clearly the danger and inform people clearly. Please take care!

Beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing! We took the ferry ride from Naha (an hour or so), and hopped off at the port of Tokashiki. There were buses lined up and two beaches to choose from. We had no idea which one to choose, so we just hopped on one of the buses (I think 400 yen a person). The bus took us directly across the island to Tokashiki beach, and as we peaked over the middle of the island the entire bus was glued to the window staring down at the stunning beaches and turquoise water. It was perfect. We laid on the beach, with the perfect view of water, white sand, and luscious green hills commanding our views. We snorkeled for a couple of hours, relaxed, walked the beach, and floated on our blow up tubes. The bus driver told us when he would be returning, so we were ready, hopped on the bus and headed back to the port. Perfect day.

Two very nice beaches. Aharen beach has a much smaller swimming/ snorkelling area than Tokashiku. There is a really cool, little uninhabited island just of the coast by Aharen beach. You can reach it by glass bottom or banana boat for 1000 yen, round trip. Tokashiku offers more space to swim and the possibility of spotting sea turtles. Both beaches are clean with beautiful water. There are some facilities for hire and shops for snacks which is helpful without being over developed. Snorkel gear hire is between 1000- 1500 yen / day.

We stayed at the Kerema Backpackers hostel. I would really recommend this place. Very friendly staff, comfy beds and good facilities. They offer a pick up service to and from the beaches, at set times, and will also pick you up from the ferry port.

If you are vegetarian/ vegan it would be a good idea to stay in a facility that has a kitchen. There are small stores where you can get groceries. The one by the port shuts at 7pm.

Tip for the boats, when it it`s busy, get down to the port early as boarding begins around an hour before sailing so most the seats get taken quickly. Booking office closes around 5 and opens around 8 at Naha and Tokashiki.

I went to Tokashiki island yesterday with visitors we had to Okinawa.
We booked the ferry in advance and opted for the slow ferry for the times because we didn't think we would need a huge amount of time on the island. In hindsight, we should have opted for the earlier ferry over and the later one back because the beach and snorkelling was so great we could have easily spent hours there.

I would really recommend getting some medication for sea sickness on the ferry because on the way over it was horrible and I'm not usually one to get sick!

We went to Aharen beach but it's easy to et to either as the buses are waiting for the ferries at the Tokashiki wharf.

The snorkelling was really good and although the swimming area looks netted, it's actually just roped off because there are jet skis and other water sports happening outside so the fish are free to swim in from outside!

I would recommend hiring a beach umbrella for 1000yen as the shade made it great to just hang out on the beach for hours.
