There are 2 ferries leaving from Nahas Tomari Port going to Tokashiki Island, and the slowest Y3,260, 70mins with 3 desks>
When booking your accommodation, check to see if they have pick -up service from the port otherwise there will be public buses and taxis waiting there every time the ferries comes in. All accommodation is situated close to the beach and about 15mins from the port. I would recommend staying for 2 or 3 days, enough time to see and do everything. There are about 20 hotels, 10 restaurants, a camping ground, a grocery store, a couple of rental shops, vending machines and wi-fi at Aharen. The grocery store sells alcohol, soft drinks, cat food, food, fishing, and swim gear a little more expensive than what you would normally pay and is open until 9:00 pm.
Please bring some dry food to feed the 30 or so stray cats wandering around the streets for a feed. You will make a difference.
When going out for a meal, you must make a reservation beforehand otherwise you might have nothing to eat. Beer sells for Y500, soft drinks for Y300 and a meal for under Y1000..You have to wear a life jacket when snorkeling at the patroled beaches, Aharen, and Tokashiki Beach. You can still snorkel but you are not allowed to use your snorkel when snorkeling.
Best place to snorkel is at Hanari Island which is about 10mins by the inflatable banana boat that leaves about every 20mins from Aharen Beach which takes up to 10people. It cost Y1000 return for adults and you can choose the time you want to get picked up. Harari Island is uninhabited so you snorkel without a life jacket.
The following is the cost to hire things at Aharen Beach.
Snorkel set includes mask, snorkel, life vest Y1.000, Beach umbrella Y1000, Beach chair Y900, Life vest Y400, Fins Y400, Swimming tubeY400, Phone case Y500, Swimwear Y1,000,
Coral Tour Y4.320 by banana boat, Cave Snorkeling Tour Y5,400 45mins, Banana Boat Ride Y1.000 for 10mins, Uninhabited Island Y1,000 round trip, skiing on board from jet ski 30mins Y5,400, 10mins Y3,200, Stand Up Paddleboards 30mins Y1,000, 1hour Y1,500, 2hours Y2,000, 1 day Y5,000, Yellow submarine Y3,240 for adults and children Y2,160.
Tokashiki beach is about 30mins by foot or a taxi ride for about Y1,200 from Ahren Beach You need to make a booking for the taxi in advance as there are only 2.
To see the turtles you will have to go out past the rope in the deep water in the afternoon and it might take a couple of hours to just find one. To see the fish it is best to go at the end of the beach near the rocks as in the middlemost of the coral has been damaged.
Bring your swimwear, swim shoes, life jacket, food and cats food for the poor cats.

After living in Okinawa for two years we finally made it to Tokashiki on a whim. We scheduled a day trip aboard the slow ferry leaving out of Tomari port, but that's another review. Aharen beach is beautiful, no doubt about it. The 10 minute bus ride from Tokashiki port to Aharen beach will cost you Y400 for adults and Y200 for children, so make sure you bring plenty of small denomination "yennies" with you. The bus lets you off a mere 100m from turqoise waters and coral reefs galore. On your way to the beach you'll pass a few vendors selling all sorts of water activities, toys, sunbrella's extra, so don't worry if you forgot something. Then, pick a spot on the beach and enjoy. Sadly, the swimming area is restricted to inside the marked area so don't expect to go outside of that to snorkel. The snorkeling inside of the area is pretty decent to a degree. There are a few reefs and plenty of fish, but nothing spectacular. Sorry to say. For what it is, you'll get your money's worth. There are plenty of places to eat and even a place to take a shower...for a fee (Y300-500), so overall it's a day well spent, provided the weather is good.
We are definately coming back, but the next time we will plan to stay for more than a day. Tokashiki might be small, but there is a lot to see and do, even with little ones in tow! Go. Have fun and enjoy paradise!!!

The view from the hills overlooking the beach and ocean as I took the bus shuttle from Tokashiki port was beyond words. Untouched nature, greeneries, and crystal blue-greenish ocean. One word: AMAZING!!!!
From the port you can take a shuttle straight to Aharen beach which cost 400¥ one way. The trip took about 20 mins but my eyes definitely had a great day overseeing the beautiful landscape.
Other reviews say that Aharen beach feels private and very quite, it wasn't really the case when I visited as it was during the school holiday period. Nevertheless, it didn't ruin my experience as the clarity and cleanliness are exceptional. You could enjoy the purity of nature which is something very rare these days, but Tokashiki & Aharen still have it. I wish I could have done an overnight stay and see the beach during sunrise and sunset.
Total beauty. Speechless.

Full amenities at the beach; there is a beach house at the entrance of the camping ground with toilets, free wifi, paying showers, vending machines, a shop just 100 meters down the road and several stalls renting gear and planks for padling. Beach chairs and parasols for rent are available. You can get, for 500 or 1000 yen, ferried to Hanari, a small island visible from Aharen beach with more fish.
Aharen itself is rocky under the ebb-line and near the western point were the rock arch is.
Beyond that promontory is another beach, Nishinoumi, where it is forbidden to swim as there are no lifesavers, but there is plenty of place to sit, even in the shade of overhanging cliffs or trees. Beware of flying thieves (crows) and sea roaches near the rocks.
When it has just rained for hours, it is better to head to Tokashiku beach instead as waters at Aharen stay murky longer.

Went in May with my wife and four kids (ages 3-9). We took the slow ferry over to Tokashiki island, which the kids loved because it is a big boat that they could run around on and enjoy open air. When we got off, there was a big sign in English, "BUS TO BEACH". At the beach, there were a number of tent-vendors who will rent you snorkel gear, umbrellas, chairs, blankets, life-jackets, sea kayaks, and other for fairly reasonable prices (snorkel set was around 1,000 yen, life jackets were 500 yen, umbrella was 1,500). The water is calm, clear, and FULL of ocean life. The kids had a great first time snorkeling, and the sand was good for digging and sand-castling. They've got a roped off "swimming area" but don't freak out if you walk off and do your own thing outside of it.
Tons of fun.

I had a fantastic experience on Aharen Beach. It had almost everything I could have hoped for at a tropical beach. The beach was broad and clean with powdery sand that was comfortable to walk and sit on. The water was amazing; crystal clear, calm and completely safe to swim in. In addition, it was the perfect temperature; not too hot and not too cold. There were also excellent facilities for tourists on Aharen Beach. There were changing rooms, restaurants, and stores with everything an ocean swimmer or skin diver could possibly want.

Me and my boyfriend stayed on the island for one night at kermas backpackers hostel. They picked us up, dropped us to the beach and let us store our luggage in their marine shop.
The beach had clear blue water and soft sand (once you got over the dead Coral), perfect for swimming. It offered lots of water sports such as kayaking and snorkeling. You could also rent umbrellas, beach chairs and even inflatables! There were all the facilities you needed by the beach, a couple restaurants, toliets and showers (however showers do cost).
Lucky for us we were able to use the marine shop facilities for free. After our day at the beach the owner drove us back to the hostel to check in. Highly recommend this hostel if you are looking to stay on the island.
The beach is very family friendly with plenty of swimming space with a lifeguard on watch.
Overall, a fantastic day!

I went to ticketing office the day before to fill out a form to reserve seats. I tried to book online but was unsuccessful. It found that strange as I was able to book tickets to go to Zamami island and the ferry company appeared to be the same. The ticketing office and ferry is at Tomari Harbor. Unfortunately they did not accept credit card so I had to pay by cash. The tickets were about $35 each and the boat ride was about 70 minutes. The ferry was clean and comfortable. They only had vending machines, so you may want to buy some food or snacks at shops at the terminal.
To get to the beach from the harbor was simple. There are buses that take people to the beach and back. I believe it was about 400 yen each way. You need exact change.
The beach was amazing. You can take a short walk over to the look out and get a great view of the bay. Like in other beaches in Okinawa, you are limited to a small area to go swimming and when you snorkel, you must wear a life vest.
We borrowed a beach umbrella and two lounge chairs for 2500 yen. It was well worth it as it was a hot day.
At the bus stop there are toilets and shower facilities. The showers are 300 yen. There are also two vending machines.
We had more time at this beach then Furuzamami beach on Zamami island.

I was very excited to do snorkeling.
Unfortunately the water had so many Jellyfish that it was impossible to do it.
One local said that it was because it was too much wind.
Anyway, the place itself is really beautiful. But i think that the structure and local commerce was a bit too old, and dirty.

There's a free public changing room with free wifi next to the beach entrance. Pay a token amount for the shower if you require one after your beach day. Avoid having to spend unnecessary monies at other commercial shops like "Beach House". They also overcharge for the rental of equipment and are simply unfriendly.

Hi just a silly question, I'm going there next week, and yes I'm alone. But where do you put your belongings when you want to go for a swim or snorkelling? I mean.... is it definitely not safe to just leave it at the beach unattended right? Is there a locker nearby or something? :p
Written 4 October 2018
Of course I left my belongings on the beach!! And while I was swimming I periodically looked over at them. Japan is an amazingly safe country. You can do this. But that's not to say that things never get stolen. They do, sometimes. If you are worried I think you can "rent" a locker in building about five minutes walk from the beach, and put your stuff in there, all safe and secure.
Written 4 October 2018
I guess you can't, but there is a camp site next to the beach.
It's a public one but you need to pay and less facilities like cold shower.
But one special, if you stay there your tent will be a closer accommodation than any other accomms. To dive into the clear water you need only a few steps.
