This was a bit of a disappointing experience. The photocopied piece of paper with brief guide notes didn't seem to equate with the place. It was sadly in need of some useful information signage and more care to make it look its best. There was a dusty exhibition area and the loos seemed to take centre place. The lighthouse had seen better days and the whole place had an air of neglect. At least it was only 2 Euros to enter, but maybe if they upped the entrance fee, they could invest in a better visitor experience, as the history of the castle in all eras was actually very interesting, (I had to Google to find out properly, given the useless guide). On a positive note, there are good views from the castle walls. However, I wouldn't make a special visit here unless you happen to be staying in Scilla.

The castle is overlooking the town of Scilla from the high rock. Looks good from the beach. Inside there's nothing of special interest but the views are magnificent. Standing at the walls it becomes self-explanatory that it had a strategic position historically - controlling the entry to the strait between mainland Italy and Sicily. Entrance fee was 2 euros.

The Ruffo Castle on the promontory of Scilla, also known as Ulysses rock for the legends surrounding it, it's a really inspiring Castle, right in heart of the Strait of Messina from where you can enjoy breathtaking views on the Thyrrenian sea. Located in Scilla, 23 km North of Reggio, it dominates the Marina Grande on the one side, with its beautiful beach and clean, crystal-clear waters and the fishermen's district of Chianalea where you can enjoy a nice walk looking at the sea all year ´round and have lunch in one of the many restaurants where they serve fresh fish. With its houses right one the sea, the whole picture really makes up for one of Calabria's most inspiring places, ideal for a postcard, a place which you just can't miss if you're traveling to Calabria!

The village of Scilla is located outside of Reggio Calabria. It is a lovely and largely renovated town along a coast which is called The Violet Coast because the water lapping its rocky shores is violet at a certain time of day. Gorgeous anytime. They also call it the Venice of Italy because many of the homes are built on or into the water. The medieval castle is in a beautifully renovated condition. View is superb onto the town and beach. There is a small museum of fishing tools as the village is all about fishing even today. You need to climb so wear walking shoes.

This castle dominates the skyline of Scilla and divides the village literally into two distinct areas. At one euro fifty, it is a bargain by European standards and well worth the climb for the view. The Mediterranean sea if meant to viewed from above with its azure colouring and glory. To the south you can see Sicily, Messina and into the straits of Messina. Take your camera and get that once in a lifetime photo of a beautiful Italian beach and coastline. The castle also provides some history into Scilla's fishing of the famed Swordfish or pesce spada. In the early 70's I visited Scilla and at that time, the castle was an international hostel. The best bed in town. I haven't stayed in any hotel, B&B, or hostel in the last 40 years that could rival this castle for it's view!

Entrance is only €2. Castle can be visited in circa 1h and have several good views of the Scilla beach and Chianalea. Definitely worth the visit.

Do not go midday. Morning is best. A great sense of history and antiquity.
