About
The Castle is closed until further notice. Whilst we are closed please visit our website and explore the Castle from the comfort of your own home. Every castle has a history, but ours is as colourful as the Jesse stained glass window in the Great Hall. In the 1830s, a rather extravagant (some say egotistic) lord envisioned his dream home. Throughout the years the Castle has changed ownership and has been ravaged by two fires, but it still remains standing. Today, our Grade 1 listed Castle is magnificent and charming in its own unique way. And while it doesn’t possess all the grandeur and opulence it had in 1836, it has inherited something equally as impressive along the way – fascinating stories that will be brought to life on your visit.

Lesson in History
Nov 2020 • Friends
A wonderful history lesson. Whilst the castle interior is sadly no longer recognisable apart from the odd feature here and there, it is still able to imagine from the photos in each room, how it would have looked. You can almost feel the history in the castle once you’ve read the detailed information displayed in the rooms. I can’t believe the important figures and gentry that have stayed there over the years. So sad most of it was destroyed in a fire but my hat comes off to those who have recreated what is there today. Would love to return in a couple of years and see what has changed.

An Interesting Find
Sep 2020
We walked from Mudeford beach, it's a gentle an approx 1 mile walk. We never made it inside the house, externally it's an impressive building with equally impressive surrounding gardens.

Brilliant find, gorgeous location and a fantastic helpful team!

Visited the area many times but had not heard of Highcliffe castle before, as we were staying down the road we thought it was worth a visit! Turned out to be an absolute gem, perfect for a visit on a rainy day. Grounds are gorgeous, especially the beach accessed either by steep steps or a much Gentler slope a little further on. You can also walk along through the steamer point nature reserve.

The castle itself tells a fascinating story of its history, including it‘s time left derelict. It’s great to see the honesty that is presented here! There’s a lot to see, highlights definitely include the stained glass, the great hall and the library.
The castle has adapted well to the current restrictions, with one way systems clearly marked and sanitiser in place, and an online booking system to avoid crowds. We all felt very safe here! An especially good job was done by the team, who seemed very organised and aware of the systems in place. They were all friendly, helpful and very happy to talk - it was a pleasure to learn from them. Their knowledge of and love for the castle really shines through!
Will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

Enjoyable visit
Oct 2020 • Couples
Beautiful house with informative displays about it's eventful history and friendly volunteers. We only had chance for a short walk around the gardens and down to the beach due to the very rainy weather today but on finer days it would be a lovely area to spend more time.

Also enjoyed a coffee and cake in the tea rooms (I can strongly recommend the Dorset apple cake!)

Great place
Sep 2020 • Couples
We found this castle whilst walking and arranged a visit for a day when weather forecast wasn’t so good (here on holiday). And very glad we did. A great little castle/house. Obviously had a lot of money spent on opening it up and it has been very well done. All one way as well so tick for covid safe. And a nice tea room too - great cakes!!

Magical
Sep 2020 • Friends
A friend took me the other day and I was pleasantly surprised by the whole place but unfortunately we could not go inside as they were setting up for a wedding. It must have been a magical day for the couple and their guests as the building and gardens were magnificent.
Unfortunately our tea in the cafe next door was a disaster. Horrible sandwiches and stale cake with hot drinks in paper cups. The whole experience was awful. They replaced the Cappucino cake with Chocolate cake which was also stale. Plagued by wasps who took a liking to our hot drinks by falling into our cups made us take an early exit to the tune of £22.25. Outrageous.
My friend and I are both disabled and even with her Blue Badge on her car she had to pay for parking so be warned.
The sun was shining so it made up for the trip.

Highcliffe Castle
Sep 2020
This castle has been restored to an excellent degree and with a difference! The original building work has been exposed to show how the castle was originally built and then all necessary facilities have been modernised and built around the original interior...making it a fascinating visit with everything a visitor now requires. There are lifts and toilets on all levels as well as a shop. Outside there is a large exterior cafe area and the walk to the beach is through the car parks and down steps to the sandy shore. The car parking is paying but there is plenty. Thoroughly recommend a visit.
