I simply didn't know what I was getting myself into, I am fit, but this required a different level of fitness. I wasn't going to be put off, the scramble was the best thing I have done in ages. Tip is to leave early in the morning in warm conditions, the pale rockface was shining in the morning sun, it gets rather hot, in hindsight leaving at 8 am this fine October morning was too late.
To reach the start of the hiking track it's a short drive out of the township of Pomona, Mount Cooroora is a 439m high volcanic plug, the goal is to reach the top for the spectacular views. Watch your footing, wear sensible shoes, follow the dirt/ rocky path, steel staircases, scramble up rockfaces grabbing hold of whatever you can: steel chain, tree roots, rocks. Our climb took forty minutes, as amateurs, and stopping to take photos, being passed by a few locals on their regular fitness workout. Going down wasn't as hard as I had thought, still challenging on the knees, holding onto the chain and going with the force, I loved it! The reward was refreshments back at one of the local cafes in Pomona. A great morning out, can't wait to do it again.

The walk to the top is difficult in parts. There are chains to assist you as you go up and down. The path is a little narrow in parts so selecting the time of day to climb is recommend. Once at the top the views are spectacular. Not recommend to attempt the climb in wet weather as rocks likely to be slippery, water is a must. Allow a couple of hours to complete the climb

Recently completed the clamber up Mt Cooroora, which is both exhilarating and exhausting. It gets steep towards the top but there are , steps chipped into the rockface, railings, chains and even metal stairs to help you along. Not sure how climbers managed before these aids were in place. There are signs at the start of the walk warning that the track can be very slippery in wet weather but when I climbed the area was having one of its driest periods in many years and I found the dust-covered rocks forming the track along the steeper parts of the track to be very slippery, treacherously so for the downhill section. Take your time, and you'll have a very rewarding experience

I made the mistake of commuting to this with having done no form of exercise in a very long time with friends who do exercise regularly.

So I ended up doing the hike mostly on my own while they went off at their own pace.

I had to take many breaks and drank a lot of water but it was beautiful when I finally got to the top.

We had a nice break up there before heading back down which also took time as I had jelly legs and had to be careful.

I also discovered I had a nice big fat leech on my after I had finished the walk so look out for those too.

Enjoyable challenging walk / scramble. Had heard others pegged this at about double the difficulty of Mt Coolum and that is about right. I kept on being overtaken !

Definitely gets the heart rate up. Great views at the top.

Nice grass area next to carpark with tables and benches to wind down. Popped into township (2 mins away) for lunch after.

BTW don't trust Mrs Google to get there else you'll be coming down dirt tracks. Get to the town and you can't miss it from there.

This is easily the most physically challenging walk I’ve done on the Coast and I’ve done a few (it easily trumps Mt Coolum & Mt Ngungun). But once you get to the top you will feel like a champion and be rewarded with postcard views. Here are a few facts & tips for those thinking of braving the walk to the summit:

- The Walk is not long in terms of length (it is only 1.5 km to the top) however it is uphill all the way and you head directly up the mountain (it is not a gradual incline like say Ngungun but a steep ascent)

- There are sections with metal steps however some parts especially towards the end are pure rock face and you need to scramble/pull yourself up. There is a metal rail with a chain which you can use to support yourself for a decent 60-75% of the walk but there are sections near the top with no chain where you may feel very exposed. But don’t let that stop you, it’s an exhilarating challenge!

-If you are 70 plus or with young kids think carefully about capacity to complete the walk. My mum and dad are in their late 60s and we did it together with no issues though Mum and dad found it much harder than when they did it 8 years ago especially going down.

-It’s a great workout. One fellow (who I dubbed energiser bunny) did the return trip three times in one morning. A few others were even jogging up and down despite the almost vertical ascent in some sections and some challenging rock formations to negotiate

-Going down is as challenging as going up - not so much from a fitness perspective but because there are sections with pure rock and no steps/path where you will have to take your time to lever yourself correctly without slipping (the rock faces are dusty and easy to slip on)

-You’ll see some interesting plant life including pines and black boys and some excellent views at various points on the way up

-From the summit at 446 metres you get panoramic 360 degree views out over the Sunshine Coast to Coolum, Noosa and inland to the west

-Allow yourself at least an hour to go up and an hour to head down (or longer depending on fitness levels etc). If you’re fit and experienced you will do it in less time

- Cooroora is famous for the annual King of the Mountain race where competitors run from Pomona town up to the summit and back to have a chance to be crowned king.

All in all, Cooroora is an excellent, challenging walk with a great payoff.

Great views at the top, especially on a sunny day. It was fun that it wasn't a straight forward hike up, you have to scramble up parts of the ascent and your legs get a good workout. The sign at the start says 2 hour round trip. It took me less than 25 minutes to make the summit and about 20 down.

It is not just a walk, it is climb. A proper climb. Being well prepared is very important. If it is raining, then more care is needed as it may get slippery. We had our girl (45 months old). But she was very cooperative which made our climb up and down quite simple. Chains are very useful, particularly while coming down. The views are fantastic and worth the climb.

The reviews we read prior to our climb were spot on. Very challenging yet so rewarding!! Be warned tho this climb is definitely not for the faint hearted. It is an uphill climb all the way with some metal stairs and a support chain in some areas while other areas are just rock face. Wear shoes with good grip and avoid climbing during wet weather.
