Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Had a great time learning about the Mixco ruins. Not the biggest or fanciest temples, but you can crawl/ climb all over them. These ruins give you a great idea of what 'day to day' life may have been. Excellent find and wonderful visit.

I really enjoyed our visit to Mixco Viejo. We were lucky to have a guide to help us understand the significance of all the ruins and trees and plants that grew at this site. The history is amazing! Such a great place to visit. It is well maintained, and has been restored in large part. There is also a model lay out of the site as you enter along with lots of information on posters to help guests understand if they do not have a guide.

The well fortified city fell to the Spanish led by Pedro Alverdo in 1520, following a month long siege that employed additional Mayan mercenaries, Spanish calvery and firearms. The Spanish massacred many and enslaved the remaining inhabitants, Alverado then ordering the city burned. The city is an example of late post-classic Mayan construction with a decided emphasis on fortification as this group of Mayan were, at this time, at war with others to the north and west, a fact that further aided the Spanish in their own conquest. The site is easily toured, at a leisurely pace, in a span of two hours with time to sit an contemplate the wonderful distant vistas from its elevated location. The site has been largely reconstructed, but this in no way diminishes, rather enhancing, the experience. Signage is in Espanol. It lies some 30 miles, likely 1 and one half hours along increasingly winding roads with tight, blind turns, north of Guatemala City. Take a tour or hire a driver.

Our favorite Post-Classic Mayan site. Spectacular setting, beautiful and well-maintained park-like grounds. Quite a contrast to our prior visit in 1977! Quite spread out -- would be a wonderful site for a picnic lunch. But bring your own -- when we visited there wasn't even bottled water available at the park (but they do have clean restrooms). The ruins themselves may be a bit less impressive than those at Iximche but we found the overall ambience much more evocative. And without the crowds. An easy day trip from Antigua or Guatemala City if you have your own transport.

These ruined are amazing they do a great job in keeping them clean. When you arrive there you really get an amazing feeling of what it was like to live back in those days. They skill it took to make these ruined out of stone is amazing. This area is not overcrowded with tourists and to get there you have to pass several small villages where you can tell how wonderful and lovable Guatemala’s people are. If you are into Mayan culture this is a place to visit.

The site is a citadel overlooking steep ravines..
the platform like buildings do not seem religious at all but rather wholly defensive. Royalty could hardly be carried aloft on these step ladder size treads with any dignity.

The twin towers are an arm span apart....perhaps boards spanned the tops allowing a few warriors to pass back and forth. Maybe they were part of a structure to transmit fire or smoke signals..

The park and landscape are beautiful
but picnics are not allowed.

This is pure history. Loved the scenery! Travel in larger groups due to solitary roads up and down the mountain. Must visit!

As an archaeologist, I'm used to seeing archaeological sites that have been reconstructed, but WOW, this site was amazing! Absolutely breathtaking & scenic vistas, well kept grounds...I didn't want to leave. Some additional signage about the structures & history would be a welcome addition for visitors. Some info is available there, but since I do not speak/read Spanish, I was out of luck. I highly recommend a visit here if you're anywhere near this area. I can't wait to return!

One of the highlights of any trip to Guatemala is a visit to Mayan ruins. If you're visiting the Guatemala City-Antigua-Lake Atitlan areas and don't have the time or inclination to drive far to the northeast part of the country to see impressive ruins, go visit Mixco Viejo instead.

Mixco Viejo is about 30 miles from Zone 10 in Guatemala City, but one wrong turn can turn into a very, very long (but interesting) drive. Once there, you'll enjoy a beautiful, uncrowded archaeological site with spectacular views of the valleys below. Go in, climb around and enjoy!

It's a trip that's definitely worth the effort. Just make sure you stay on Highway 5 and make sure your GPS is in good working order.
