A small museum is located just at the Fort entrance, entry fee is Rs. 5. It houses a unique stone sculpture of Lajjagauri Lotus Headed Goddess of Fertility from Naganatha Temple, Bijapur District, Karnataka, India, c. 650 CE, now in the Badami Museum. No photography is allowed so image is downloaded from Google.
Entry to Fort complex is free. Places to visit are Lower level Shiv temple, Upper level Shiv temple and Grainery. Very interesting walk to the top of the Fort. A breathtaking view of Badami town & Agastya lake from top.

Most people focus their visit on the Badami Caves, so the Badami Fort was a quiet visit when I was there. The temples are stunningly set atop the hills. The views are incredible, looking over the city, the Badami Caves and the lakeside temple. It is also not a tiring climb compared to many other forts in India—a true hidden gem!

There are a few places you can visit while going to the fort. Quite frankly, it's less of a fort and more of old temples, steep cliffs, and remnants of fortified walls. So, what should you know? Here is a small list.

1. Preferably go early in the morning or on the evening. It is open from 6 to 6. The sun rise is spectacular. The view of badami town is really good too.
2. Be sure to visit the lower shivalaya temple as well.
3. There are a couple of mantaps as well on the hill. It's a very brief crawl under the rocks and through the boulders. Don't miss it.
4. Don't piss off the monkeys. Don't even run away from them. They are a powerful gang and can smell your fear from a mile.
5. Be ready to spend a couple of hours. If you want to visit in the evening, be there at least by 4.30. The guards are very particular about their closing time.
6. Lastly but importantly, don't drive down in SUVs or big cars. The streets are narrow and crowded. You will get stuck with nowhere to go if another vehicle comes from the opposite direction.

Be a responsible traveler. Don't throw plastic. :)

It's quite strenuous if attempted during the daytime (even 8:30 in the morning seems like noon time) because of the heat and no shade. One must remember to carry lot of water or liquids.

It seems that this fort kept on getting improved, sacked, inhabited again, improved again and so on for over 1,300 years until Tipu Sultan's times. There is a place that is said to have been his treasury. Quite a place!

The Badami fort is located opposite the hill on which the rock cut temples have been made. The trek up the fort is quiet tough however the entire climb is quiet interesting with few ancient temples en route. It must be one of the oldest forts in India and is definetly not to be missed when one is in Badami.

Badami is known for its beauty and rich history. It is part of Bagalkot district in state of Karnataka. Chalukya kings ruled Badami, which was earlier named as Vathapi. The name Vathapi is a legendary name relating to Sage Agasthya. Two demon brothers Vathapi and Ilvala alias Badami used to kill innocent visitors for their food by tricks. The elder Ilvala would turn Vathapi into a goat and offer its meat to their guests. After the guests consuming the meat Ilvala would call out the name of Vathapi. Due to certain magical power Vathapi was emerging from abdomen of the consumer resulting in his death. Then both brothers fed themselves with the flesh of dead guests. But their trick did not work against Sage Agasthya who digested Vathapi before Ilvala could call him saying “Vathapi jeernobhava” [let Vathapi be digested]. Then Agasthya killed Badami. Thus symbolizing those two demons two tall rocks in Badami represent the demons Vathapi and Ilvala.
In Badami its Fort has gone within historical frame in Indian archaeological records. This fort is well guarded by Nandi (Bull god) at the entrance, which runs across two hills bifurcating itself as North Fort and South Fort. North Fort was used as treasury by Tippu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore. It was in 18th century Tippu Sultan visited Badami. He was much impressed with the place and added one more fort on top of the hills. There are granaries and treasure spot that are worth seeing. They run our memory back to those glorious days of our Indian history.
In a battled that ensued between Chalukyas and Pallavas the latter king Narasimhavarman won the battle and in his bad temper destroyed every inch of Badami. What we see at present is remnants of bygone fort and beautiful Vathapi.
There are cave temples at the foot of the hill well known for their rich and attractive architectural beauty. We have to start trekking in the route near 2nd and 3rd caves. On the way to the fort we can see Buddhist carvings in small cave. Badami Fort is almost like deserted area as its front gate is locked for the tourists due to some accidents and mishaps that had occurred in the recent past. You must be careful while climbing steep and strenuous steps.
The noted two Shivalayas; one of Upper Shivalaya devoted to Lord Vishnu and Lower Shivalaya devoted to Ganesha were built by King Pulikesi II during 5th century, where the wall of Shivalaya portrays mythological episodes in beautiful sculptures of elephants and horses. There is a tall watchtower near Lower Shivalaya built in 14th century. We have to walk all the way up to fort. When you reach the top you can enjoy bird-eye view of Badami town. There are ruins of a watch tower, treasury and large granaries. There is good lot of adventure involved in trekking this hill to have glimpses of the fort. Since visiting time is between 6 am to 6 pm, you should plan to start your journey early in the morning. Better take a local guide with you otherwise it will be awesome exercise in vain.
There are budget, mid-range and luxury hotels with good facilities. You will get multi-cuisine restaurants where you will get North Indian, continental and South Indian cuisine. You will relish local cuisine with variety of rice dishes, chutneys and snacks at Badami. There are several options for accommodation in Badami.
Belgaum Airport is nearest at 150km. But it is better to travel across Bangalore. Badami is situated on Hubli-Sholapur rail route at 163km from Bijapur and 128km from Hubli.

The walk through the Badami Fort is interesting as one walks through narrow narrow passages between cliffs. It is an uphill walk, but worth walking as the panoramic view of the rugged landscape from above is rewarding. There are also two medieval Chalukyan temples in the fort complex.

Basically badami is famous for its cave .but along with that badami fort also good tourist spot but people ignore it .i will tell you it is a short trek of 1.5 hour and very pleasant in morning time.fort consist of temples and few of them are accessible . Whole badami city can be visible from top of the fort.
