This strange, almost deserted, town was apparently created for a cowboy film made in the 1960s. The single-story houses are unoccupied except for an annual festival in the incorporated church, when pilgrims flock to the location and are no doubt happy to endure the primitive accommodation. Anyway, it is worth a walk round the exotic town, even if the sun is beating down hard on you. There is plenty of parking space in the large open central square of the town

Stayed in the Agritourismo Sinis which is two minutes away from San Salvatore. An amazing experience. All the food, wine and liqueurs are made on site and there is a menagerie with donkeys, pigs, chickens, ducks and two ostriches. The staff are all members of the same family and are extremely enthusiastic and helpful. We arrived for a epic Sunday lunch, of robust and rustic antipasti, pasta, cuttlefish and sea bass, then roast suckling pig and salad, finishing with local marzipan cakes and fennel liqueurs. Jugs of wine were repeatedly replenished. Dinners on subsequent nights were all different with many local specialities. You eat at long tables and it is all very convivial. Room number 1 is very comfortable and the price for room and half board is a steal.

around the church of San Salvatore you wander in a western style entourage, little pilgrimshouses, the main attraction however is the little church and not even the church itself, but the crypt: you step down back in time, through a hatch, into a Roman 'temple', some frescoes and even a preroman water well - supraposition of several cultures, great place to feel the intense silence of time, out of time - afterwards do eat at the only local restaurant Abraxas, visited by locals and visitors like you, no strange surcharge for bread and cultlery here, genuine food, of course also fish caught directly in the waters very nearby - it's a very varied area, this Sinis!!!!! and the people are gentle indeed - I will love to come back!

The layout of this tiny village is so community based. The doorways into each house are very low, and I was told this is because Sardinians are small in stature.

Abandoned Spanish style village - you could be in rural Cuba! Used for cowboy films in the past - zero facilities - just stroll around and let your imagination take over! Ancient crypt in church worth a visit if it happens to be open...

Here you find the access to the archeological site of Tharros, one of the most important in Sardinia. Also the little church in the village is worth a visit (a simple beauty). The only reason why I do not give full grade is because of the services in the area (restaurants and bars), which are poor. The beaches are very nice, but be aware that the ones on the right side of the isthmus are also dangerous for swimming, particularly if it is a windy day. There are Sea currents. The beach on the left side, just after Tharros, (called mare morto by the locals because there are no waves) is protected and safe. Nice walk from la Rocca, opposite Tharros, and il faro, at the end of the isthmus. Coming back, downhill from il faro, you enjoy an unbeatable view (great photos here). Enjoy!

We got to know about this little gem throgh a local who said if you are passing by visit San Salvatore . It's not listed as a tourist attraction or even sign posted. It's a small collection of houses , you can easily miss the sign San Salvatore next to some bamboo bushes. Need only half an hour. Made of collection of small houses around a square and one bar . Houses are tiny and single story and this please was used to film several spaghetti westerns . The town looks deserted . Plenty of parking as no formal car park.

San Salvatore is a village that was chosen in the past as a perfect location for western movies. Small one floor houses and a wide square. The village looks abandoned even if there are inhabitants.

A fishing village, used as a movie set for a Western movie, has now become a tourist resort just a short walk from the famous and beautiful Is Arutas beach.

Is there a bus to take 6 people from Cagliari to San Salvatore Sinis on a Saturday in May?

Hi - I would very much doubt it - the best you could do maybe would be a bus to Oristano and then a taxi to San Salvatore. By far the easiest and probably cheaper option would be to hire a car/people carrier for the day/weekend. Then you could also see the Punic / Roman remains at Tharros on Sinis as well as the spectacular quartz sand beaches and turquoise seas along the W coast right there! Good luck - enjoy, all of it is easily worth the trip!

Strada statale 131 till Santa Giusta, Oristano Sud. Then drive toward Cabras, and then San Giovanni in Sinis. In September there are never too many people on the road or at the beach. Please remember that San Giivanni in Sinis is a beautiful but wild beach, with waves and underwater currents that can become dangerous when there is mistral wind. Just be careful. Don't miss Tharros and a walk to the tower and the lighthouse. Enjoy beautiful Sardinia!
