Baan Tiew
About
Batik is the ancient art of using wax and ink to desing on cloth. We will use special batik dyes on indonesian silk and cotton t-shirts. Aunty Tiew will guide you on how to draw your image on the cloth, how to pour the wax to make the oulines of your image and then how to fill in the sections with vibrant colors.

    Learn some good tricks
Make sure you book at least one day before. You can select from vegetarian, sea food or chicken and cook three dishes from the menu. We picked spring rolls, green curry and pad thai. Delicious. We also learnt some good cook tricks. :-) the ingredients are mainly from the garden at the back so you would be surprise how some ingredients we get in the UK actually look and taste over here.

Pad Thai and Chicken Satay 😋
I did a cooking class with my two children aged six and ten. We cooked pad Thai and chicken satay with a cucumber salad. The food was delicious and the teaching was brilliant. Tiew was so kind and patient with the kids and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The ingredients were measured out with very clear and easy instructions. Such a great way to spend a couple of hours. Thank you so much.

    Cooking class
We did the cooking class & made pad Thai, Massaman curry and Tom yum. Tiew was very patient with us. She went through all the ingredients with us and gave us alternatives for when we go back to the uk. We really enjoyed the whole experience (and eating the food after!) whilst making a new friend :) Would highly recommend!

We had been staying on Koh Jum for about 6 days. We stumbled on Tiews cookery and Batik courses whilst visiting the bakery shop just next door. They do wonderful home baked croissants.
Anyway, we decided to do a Batik course, I did screen printing and tie dying at college but always wanted to try Batik.
Tiew is a fantastic teacher, she is patient, has stacks of knowledge and techniques and it was a pleasure been taught.
After a few cups of homemade ginger tea we decided on our designs and got creative. Tiew demonstrated every step whilst explaining every method along with story’s of her life and learning Batik on Koh Samui. She speaks great English too.
It was a really fun few hours working with the wax and tools and the fun part of applying the coloured dyes to our designs.
Tiew takes care of everything and we collected our finished batik silks at the end of the day.
If you are looking for something creative to do whilst on the island you should definitely have a go.
We were very surprised with our results.

Next time we come back to Koh Jum we will definitely do it again and also keen to try her cooking classes.

I had the best experience with Tiew at my very first Batik class. I was apprehensive at first as I am not a natural with art. I had the best time, Tiew is an intuitive teacher, she really gave me the tools, space and support to enjoy my time with her. I highly recommend taking a class with her. I was delighted and surprised with my end result. Thank you Tiew, great fun and I learned a lot.

Tiew is an outstanding cook and teacher. She taught us every meal step by step to be able to make them at home, including a secret tip here and there. The food was delicious and we can’t wait to show off our newly acquired cooking skills at home. Highly recommend!

We visited for a fantastic cooking class with a cook with great humor. The course is in her own home. We learned some great tricks and yesterday we prepared the food at home here in Denmark from the recipiece we had and it was just the same. This Place has my best recommendations :)
