About
Ischigualasto Provincial Park, also called Valle de la Luna ("Valley of the Moon" or "Moon Valley"), due to its otherworldly appearance, is a provincial protected area in the north-east of San Juan Province, north-western Argentina, limiting to the north with the Talampaya National Park, in La Rioja Province. Both areas belong to the same geological formation, the Ischigualasto Formation (sometimes Ischigualasto-Talampaya Formation) Established on 3 November 1971, the park has an area of 60,370 ha (603.7 km2; 233.1 sq mi) In 2000 UNESCO included Ischigualasto and Talampaya National Park among its World Heritage Sites.

Three nights ago we did the night circuit with some friends. We went with high expectations of being surprised by the formations, the moon and everything related to the park. The guide explained, knowing what he was talking about, everything about the park, the colors, formations, history and even the fossil remains that were discovered there, we couldn't see any of that, it was night, except for some formations we couldn't get an idea of what he was talking about. which spoke to us since the museum is closed at night. I was very frustrated by the guide's response to my question about why we couldn't visit the museum and see the colors of the rocks that he explained and the dinosaur remains that he said were there. The explanation was that the staff had to rest to return the next day. early, which I understand perfectly, but, if this circuit takes place four nights a month, couldn't they put a couple of people on those nights to provide a complete and quality service? There are only four nights a month that two people could spend in the museum before the night tour, they could call those interested half an hour in advance and make it a complete experience. There were many staff at the entrance to the parking lot who, perhaps, could be at the museum. Opinion of someone who left frustrated and disappointed with the proposal. Thank you

We did the excursion on our own with our car, once you arrive at the place you have to get the entrance ticket, it costs $10,000 for each adult and $6,000 for children, and children under 6 years old do not pay. The tour is done with a guide that lasts 3 hours and covers 40 kilometers. He goes with a car and everyone behind in a caravan, each with his own car, there are 5 stops to take photos and with an explanation. The property prior to this has a place to buy drinks and some sandwiches and a small artisan fair. It is a nice experience, but in our opinion it is too much for the beautiful and imposing Talampaya.

You obv need a car to get here. Tours are about 3 hours long as you need to drive around the National Park. You'll get to experience world's history, living and breathing all around you, plus the fact you are stepping foot on Triassic land...it's a rain of knowledge. Lots of beautiful and incredible rock formations, and great story telling about mammals and dinosaur that occupied these lands.

I think it is one of the most impressive landscapes that the Cuyo region gives us.
An entrance fee must be paid ($3,500 general, $2,000 for retirees) and the tour is done in a caravan with your own car. The first one takes the guide (in this case Martín, EXCELLENT!) and at each post he stops to give the explanation.
Duration: 3 and a half hours of travel.
I recommend it 100%

Given the lack of regular public transportation, I contacted EMANUEL (Cel. +54 9 264 483-9086) His guidance and driving were exceptional.
We leave early from Valle Fértil towards Talampaya and from there towards the Scenic Route.
In the afternoon we enter Ischigualasto and conclude with a panoramic view of Valle...
Absolutely recommendable Emanuel's work. Thank you !

The park is great, it takes about 3 hours to do the full tour, the guide we got was very good and despite the amount of people (Because it was winter vacation) it was super tidy and the information I provided was very valuable. This is my second chance and I improve by offering a new stop that shows how fossils are extracted. Impeccable bathrooms. The only thing that is to improve is the place where you can buy food, very basic and take into account that there is nothing nearby would have to be of better quality.

Exelent experience. To get there you have a long trip from San Juan of 300 hundred Kms, of a very lonely and not a good route. No has in the way. The park is absolutely different to everything . The forms and shapes in the place are really very strange and difficult to imagine how they were formed. The guide was clear and king in a tour of aprox 3 hours. The place if you use your imagination, would be very similar to be walking in the moon.
Although of the difficulties to visit the park, it’s really worth going, it’s really different

Nice park but we were not completely overwhelmed. Not that expensive but you pay extra as a foreigner. Come with your own car so you can drive behind the guide. We had a guide that spoke a little bit English, so his effort was appreciated. We thought the tour was a bit to long. But the drive is absolutely beautiful.

An area that fortunately is protected and is a source of constant archaeological and geological discoveries. You visit by car, in a caravan, with departures every hour and a shared guide. The geoforms are incredible, and the site's interpretation center is very interesting.

I visited Ischigualasto Provincial Park in August 2007 and loved it. I found it to be one of the best places I've seen in Argentina.
I had planned to visit it one afternoon and see Talampaya National Park the following day but as it was snowing heavily we had to visit both parks on the same day. We visited Talampaya in the morning and arrived at Ischigualasto at about 2:30 pm.
The entrance fee is AR$20 per person, but that was a resident fare so it might be more expensive for foreign tourists. You must enter the park with your own car so if you don't have one you'll need to rent one or go with a remis. The roads of the park are not paved but they are safe. The cars depart from the reception centre like in a caravan (there were more than 30 cars for the 3:00 pm excursion) and stop at 5 points: 1) el gusano (the worm) rock formation, 2) valle de la luna (Moon's valley), 3) cancha de bochas (a place with round-shaped rocks), 4) 'el submarino' (the submarine) rock formation and 5) 'el hongo' (the mushroom) rock formation.
I thought I'd like Talampaya more than Ischigualasto but I was wrong. I loved Ischigualasto very much. The place is so strange and beautiful. The rock formations, the colours of the mountains, everything was magical. A person told me it was better to visit the park in the afternoon and she was right. The colors were enhanced at sunset.
The whole excursion lasts about 3:30 hours including the visit to the museum. I don't know if the excursion is available in English. Maybe you' ll have to get there with your private guide to translate what the park ranger is saying.
Ischigualasto closes at 4:00 pm in winter and 5:00 pm in summer. I was there in winter and it was cold but not freezing. They say it's extremely hot in summer.
The park is far away from any urban centre so it would be better to leave the place before it gets dark. The best base of operations to visit the area is San Agustín del Valle Fértil, about 60 kilometres south. The road is paved but there are some goats around, so be careful.
All in all, both parks have some of the nicest landscapes in Argentina. They are right up with the Northwest in terms of natural beauty. In my opinion, they are as nice as the Humahuaca Gorge and much, much nicer than Rio de las Conchas's gorge in Cafayate. Don't miss San Juan & La Rioja provinces... they are beautiful places! Thanks for reading.
