Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The monastery is situated in a peaceful and wild area, but it is also very close to the city. It is well maintained and has beautiful garden. There is a fountain with drinking water in the middle of the inner yard. In the church there are well preserved wall-paintings and icons.

This is one of the most spiritual places i have been. The architecture is amazing as well as the people.
If you happen to be there, you can even sleep in the monastery, this is one of a kind experience.
If you go there, try to find the little cave behind the monastery. The locals say that the water in the cave heals everything.

The monastery was founded in 1833 by Archimandrite Joseph, later known in the struggle for ecclesiastical autonomy as the Uniate Archbishop Joseph Sokolsky. He came here from the Trojan Monastery with Hieromonk Agapius in 1833. By the entrance of the nearby cave, a small wooden church was built, and the following year it was demolished in the same place, with the funds and assistance of the villagers from the nearby villages of Etara and Nova mahala, who built today's large temple. The Sokolovsky Monastery is also actively involved in national liberation struggles. On July 31, 1856, it established Captain Grandfather Nikola's detachment, with the intention of making it the center of the uprising, and during the April Uprising, on May 1, 1876, the detachment of the governor Tsanka Dustabanov was formed here. Vasil Levski also found shelter here. During the Russo-Turkish War, the monastery was turned into a military hospital. A small museum exhibit keeps relics of the struggle for liberation.

Very nice and not very turistic monastery. You can easily drive by car. Not very spectacular but calm and authentic. Ca. 150 meters from monastery there is local restaurant serving really good and cheap local meals. We were the only tourists there. Try theirs fried paprika with garlic. They were superb.

Superb location, worth tying in with the "Working Life" museum lower down the hillside. Views across the Gabrovo countryside. Quite a few steps down to the church, but well worth it.

Travel up a steep hill from the Etar musuem and you can reach the beautiful Sokolski monastery. Beautiful tranquil gardens, a famous fountain, and a great view. Descend down to the ornate orthodox chapel, and surrounding grottos.

Calm atmosphere.
There you may feel the spirt of the past.
Perfect place for relax in the outskirts of the mountain, away from the city.

If you decide to visit ETARA you must go up the hill 4 km to Sokolski Monastery. It is positioned up the hill with a nice view and it is a nice monastery with not a very big church inside the monastery. It is old and interesting.

you should visit if you ever go to Gabrovo or Etara
