Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Being an American Armstrong, I had long been hoping to see Gilnockie Tower and other historic sites in the Borderlands, from where our clan hailed....and I was very happy to make plans to do so with Adam Armstrong-Crisp, tour-guide extraordinaire and fellow Armstrong! He was so enthusiastic about showing it to me and my husband...He even showed up for a pint with us at the hotel we were at, the evening before our tour. When he showed up the next day, he came right to our door, took us to the tower, introduced us to the caretakers there, let us take out time to soak it all in....he drove us on the circuitous, winding roads through the region, to Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall, showed us castles and filled us in on historical facts and legends. He also was eager to share his status as a descendant of a border reiver with other passing tour groups.......His passion for the history is amazing and palplable. I can't think of a better way to have been shown our ancestral stomping grounds. He also brought us to a lovely coffee and pastry shop before we parted ways. Thank you, Adam! I will send more family members right along! You are highly recommended!!! Tina Armstrong, Beverly MA USA

Adam gave us a tour of the Borders which is where my family lines stem from (Clans Douglas and Armstrong). He is very knowledgable and passionate about Border Reiver history, and he tooks us to well know AND lesser known spots. I recommend his tour services for anyone interested in learning more about the Borders!

We had an amazing time with Adam. He is just as proud of the Armstrong name as we are. He picked us up from Edinburg Airport and took us to Hermitage Castle because it was one place we wanted to see and it was it’s last opening day. He told us stories and explained how it would have looked and functioning of things. Then off to the Cursed Stone which was a pretty cool/neat thing to see. He then dropped us off at our accommodations for the night at the Stables Cottage. Adam was there on time to pick us up for our journey the next day, and off we went. He took us to places we didn’t expect to see and continued on with telling us the history behind things, he always makes sure that you understand what he’s saying. This was our first time using a tour guide and it was well worth it. We got to see the things we wanted to see, didn’t spend any time getting lost looking for them.

Personality: It is very obvious that Adam loves what he’s doing, the history and meeting new people. He is enthusiastic, energetic, loves his kids and experiencing new things. We enjoyed his sense of humour and I’m sure we’ll all be repeating his McDonalds (food-he likes McDonalds) quote for years to come, and it’ll make us all laugh and think of him every time. All around he’s just a great person that we all enjoyed spending time with. We had the honor to meet another ‘kin’ that reminded us of who we are, where we came from and the pride of being an Armstrong. Thank you Adam.

We booked Adam for a full day tour of Langholm in search of our family roots. We gave Adam one surname to research but by the end of our tour Adam helped us discover many more ancestors with ties to the area! Adam has a wealth of knowledge regarding the area, the families that lived there and their histories. He took us to cemeteries where our ancestors are buried. He regaled with us stories about the Noble Clans and the brawling Reivers. He is very knowledgeable about Scottish history in general. He surprised us with a trip to Carlisle, England to see our family names written on the underpass path to Carlisle Castle. We enjoyed our day with Adam and highly recommend him to anyone coming to Scotland in search of their family roots.

My two daughters and I were guided by my namesake Adam Armstrong around the border areas where my Armstrong ancestors once held sway. We had a fascinating day seeing where the Armstrong clan lived and died and was able to put much context around what I had previously read. I found Adam to be an excellent guide, who was incredibly enthusiastic and brimming with knowledge of all things Armstrong.

I can thoroughly recommend Adam’s services for those wanting to get a better understanding of the border areas and the reiving families that used to inhabit them.

Adam drove from Langholm to Edinburgh to meet us. This one sentence demonstrates Adam's committment to teaching others about his home as he had to secure daycare for his two sons and drive over an hour to pick us up.The "us" were my husband, myself, my brother-in-law, and his fiance. As Armstrongs ourselves, two by birth and two by marriage, we were eager to see the role the Armstrong clan played as border reivers.Adam brought us to important landmarks and regaled us with tales from the past. He brought the Armstrong history to life. Our experience exceeded any expectations we may have had prior to the excursion. Adam's knowledge is boundless. He is the guy you want to spend time with.

Adam Armstrong’s encyclopedic knowledge of the Scotland border clans, the Armstrong’s in particular, is amazing. He brought us to all the castles, towers, graves etc that we had seen online for the Armstrong clan. I stood at the grave of my grandfather (13 times removed). Adam is friendly and funny and a pleasure to travel with. He can fill every minute with history and anecdotes. I highly recommend looking him up if you’re interested in a tour of the Scottish southern border and the amazing clan histories involved!

This tour was so interesting and I can’t say enough good things about Adam Armstrong. A great storyteller. He took us on an all day tour. The tours are customizable. We just got in the van and let him do his thing. Scotland, the Armstrongs, and all the border reivers have such a amazing history. Thank u Adam. Will be back again one day and I will do another tour with you.
