This is generously called the “Little Switzerland” of Armenia. It doesn’t come close, but there are more trees than the other side of the mountain. I had heard so many great things about Dilijan and the hiking that I ended up being underwhelmed. It’s nice for an escape from Yerevan. But if you want Switzerland this is not it.

Dilijan National Park is less than a 90 minute drive from downtown Yerevan and is just a short drive further from Yerevan than Sevan. The National Park is a wonderful place and if all you had seen previously was Yerevan, then you'll think you aren't even in Armenia any more. The area has been a reserve since 1958 but was designated a National Park only in 2002. It is in a surprisingly excellent state of preservation. I say surprisingly because Armenia is generally a very polluted place with acid rain, bad air, and plastic litter everywhere you look -- but not the case in Dilijan National Park. It is actually quite clean!
Dilijan National Park has hiking and mountain biking, and features the monasteries of Haghardzin, Goshavank, Jukhtakvank, and Matosavank. We haven't camped here yet, but I have heard from locals that there are good camping spots.
According to a bit of Internet research, I see that Dilijan National Park has 902 species of vascular plants including 40 rare species and 29 endangered species. The park also has over 40 species of mammals including bear, dear, fox, lynx, wolf, boar, cat, roe, badger, and others.
In the town of Dilijan you'll find a number of lovely B&Bs. We stayed at the Casanova Inn, which I highly recommend.
There is no entrance fee for Dilijan National Park. We found a number of the hiking trails to be well-signed with official Dilijan National Park signs. Wonderful place. Highly recommended.

We were at Casanova Guest House in Dilijan (see separate reviews) and after speaking to the owner and reading various blogs we decided to go for the Parz lake to Gosh Monastery section of the Trans Caucasian trail.
We paid 16,000 drams for a taxi (guest house owners brother) to take us from Dilijan to Parz Lake and then collect us 3 hour later from the Gosh Monastery. We had a rental car, but because of the roads, this made far more sense to us. And we didn't want to walk there, then double back on ourselves to get the car. The road up to Parz Lake is amongst the worst we experienced in Armenia. The roads from Gosh are fine,
We did the walk in about 2 hours 15 mins, including stopping for photos and a snack, the weather was cool despite it being July which may have worked in our favor.
There are red markings on the route, I would say unless you as a novice hiker/walker do not get a guide, it's a waste of money. Once you find the start at Parz Lake, near the toilet block there was only 1 sections where we had to look hard for the markers at a kind of cross roads before the meadow, but they are there, also once you re about to descend on the track into Gosh there's only 2 markers on trees, but if you download offline google maps before you can double check you are going in the right direction. It would be hard to get too lost in my opinion.
The odd car/farmer does appear so again, unless you're a complete novice you'll be fine.
If you search there are maps for the walk supplied by the Dilijan National Park, I'm not able to post the link, but similar directions are also on a board at Parz Lake itself.
And after doing the walk we definitely recommend going from Parz Lake to Gosh and not the other way around, you get to see the Monastery from a high vantage point as it appears below, the reveal was excellent. Also the terrain as you enter Gosh would not be fun to walk up! It was much better walking up hill through the wooded area starting from the lake.
There were taxis at Gosh if you don't have anything pre arranged. Also toilets/restaurants etc etc
Very enjoyable small hike, and finishing at the monastery is great.

Right, there is poor information on the internet on how to get there.
We finally found the way.
- From the Yerevan State Medical University on Koryun Street take bus number 46 head northbound.
-Take it to Avtokayaran (Northern) Bus station. It will take a good 30 mins to get there and it weaves through residential areas though don't worry you'll get there.
- The bus will stop there as it's a popular destination. Ask any of the drivers they point you to the correct minivan and the price is 1500 AMD.
We went hiking in the mountains to the Clear Lake that was disappointing. They call it the 'Switzerland of Armenia' and whilst there are some nice views there is trash everywhere. The town center is ugly, tourist information is impossible to find if you don't speak Armenian or Russian and I don't think we would recommend it to others
Good Luck and Enjoy

This national park is very close to Delijan, the Mini Swiss city or spa town.
One of four protected national parks in Armenia which occupy almost more than 240 KM square area in north eastern region
Dilijan city is also surrendered by this natural park with amazing nature
This valley is also surrounded by lessor caucuses mountains and rivers in area
The climate is cool in summer, snowfall in winter inside park too, favorable oxygen, landscapes, curative mineral natural waters..etc etc etc
The flora of park includes more than 900 species of vascular plants
Most important monuments like haghartin monasyery, goshvank monastery, matosavant monasyery are located in this national park in addition to Parz lake

We ‘attempted’ the hike from Hagartsin monastery to Dilijan, via Shamayak village- however we didn’t go far. With a lonely planet and National Park guidebook guiding us, we tried to walk the route however the trails were so poorly maintained and overgrown (Up to 2ft of thick weeds in places) that we couldn’t get through and finish the walk. After making three wrong turns and walking for 3 hours, we decided to turn back towards the Monastery. This was very disappointing as this was the purpose of out visit to Dilijan. Based on this, I wouldn’t recommend visiting Dilijan whatsoever, to be honest.

Big thumbs up and thanks for a Park Ranger at the Visitors’ Centre of the Dilijan NP for explaining us the route and recommending an online map with trail tips. Cheers, if you’re reading this!
The trail from Dilijan to Parz Lake was marked but you cannot rely on the trail marks solely. There are parts with no trail at all. We had to cut our way through bushes and meadows. View were beautiful but the weather was not so nice (rain and hail storm) but that’s just early June in the mountains ;) I’d love to come back and explore more.

Hi guys, I need some more detailed info on Dilijan national park hiking. Like best place to stay to start hike, guide required or not, pick up and drop-off from Yerevan etc. We are planning to visit by end of August.

Hi - just got back following a six day trip - enjoyed some aspects and others less so - difficult to sum it up! As for the hiking (I have reasonable experiences) the tourist info center map is useless. In fact I would say it is a dangerous reference point since many of the tracks have poor markings and/or rerouted. I downloaded an app produced by HIKEArmenia - depending on your experience this could be very useful. Sadly the EU funding has been completely wasted on a fancy building but not much else (typical i would say of how much of the natural resources of this amazing country are being wasted and institutions seem not to care). My advice - if you are experienced then it is well worth a trip but don’t be complacent! If you are not then perhaps search for a local guide and ensure you have the basics - right shoes as a minimum, fully charged phone or two, lots of water. I would say that you do not attempt the longer routes unless you know what you are doing and are confident in navigating else it could get dangerous quickly as tracks could lead you up steep inclines with equally challenging declines! Dilijan is beautiful and could be a lot more! As for places to stay - I stayed at Hover and have left a review on TA. I wouldn’t stay there again. Plenty of other options. People are friendly though a bit reserved. Taxis are the usual the world over, download Yandex or GG either of these will serve you well to and from airport, from note to trail start points, carry cash and don’t expect change in coinage! In short - unless you plan to hike there isn’t too much the wow factor fades after a day unless your deep in the national park where it truly is beautiful! Finally, if you are a beginner or not confident in navigating there is a reasonably straightforward trail near the Hagarstin Monastery - 3 km both ways with moderate elevation at the end of it as Ana amazing water fall system deep in the park - it’s on the app I referenced earlier. Good luck!
