About
A heritage railway running through the Forest of Dean run by volunteers. We now have 5 stations along the line - with great walks and local pubs accessible from many.We regularly have special events - such as visits from Thomas the Tank engine, Bygone Branchline days and Sanata Specials for Xmas. At Norchard we have a large free car-park, a well stocked shop selling a vast array of books, toys and gifts - as well as a fascinating museum transporting you back in history! Our southern terminus at Lydney Junction is only a 2 minute walk from the mainline Lydney station - and through ticketing is available - so you can buy a ticket from Birmingham to Parkend! Every penny spent goes towards restoring heritage rail travel.

- Richard F18 contributionsBrilliant Birthday visit for a 72year old youngster! What a place with hard working people! We would recommend to anybody of any age to go and enjoy this railway. From leaving Norchard to go down to Lydney, then up to Parkend for a two hour stop (try the Woodmans Inn not far away) the whole trip was delightful. Make sure you visit all, especially the museum. Probably the best new bookshop you will find anywhere. This visit was part of a birthday treat, I came away with top quality books costing just short of 3 figures! The history of the area is very present there, not only the railway, but also the Norchard pit history - look out for the torrent of water entering the River Lyd just near the entrance bridge - still draining the many connected underground collieries in the area because Norchard pit was the lowest point!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2023
- Lynn WLondon, United Kingdom6 contributionsWell worth a visitThis is a fabulous experience, especially for the price of the tickets. It's run by volunteers and they're all really helpful and friendly. The train is comfortable and you can choose either a day ticket or a round trip. We did the round trip because my mother is elderly and can't walk very far, but next time we will get the day ticket so we can get on and off and visit the different areas. We have lots of wonderful photos, especially when the steam engine has to change ends. There are facilities at the different stations and at Norchard there's a café, gift shop and museum. Well worth a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 October 2023
- Marilyn R1 contributionA lovely outing in a beautiful piece of EnglandThe whole railway experience was very well managed. The volunteers are doing a marvellous job of maintaining the stations, the carriages, the rail network, everything. The station cafe and gift shop were well stocked. Everything was totally clean and everyone was friendly and helpful. Good for families and groups of friends.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 October 2023
- Tracey S1 contributionGreat transport, food and fun!My husband and I and a couple of friends attended the murder mystery event on 7/10/23. I would just like to say that it was a fantastic experience and very much enjoyed by all of us. Being a passenger on a lovely train was great but the food was also tasty (especially the cheesecake!). It was also very well served by the excellent catering staff who had a challenging job. The murder scenario was great fun, the cast were excellent and never broke character even when challenged by some ‘slightly’ inebriated fellow passengers. All in all it was a truly enjoyable experience and I would definitely recommend it!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 8 October 2023
- Jayne K5 contributionsA warm welcome and a taste of the past!A warm welcome awaits you for a 4.5 mile journey through Forest and run by volunteers. There is a large car park, museum, shop and cafe providing all you need for a relaxing trip experiencing a taste of the past. Well worth a visit, and you can also take your dogs!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 October 2023
- Ancient-trekkersGillingham, United Kingdom107 contributionsEnjoyable afternoon on the Dean Forest Steam Railway. My wife and I had a lovely afternoon stepping back in time to the steam era. Plenty of free car parking on site, also a cafe, shop and museum there too. Very nostalgic and extremely well organised by the staff and enthusiastic volunteers. The trip we had booked took us to all the stations on the line. Fortunately, you are able to get on and off the train at a couple of the stations to watch the steam engine recouple, turn around and take on water. Staff and volunteers were good fun, friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2023
- Sarah H1 contributionSerene travelIt was a great way to spend 1 1/5 hours on a rainy day. The carriages were cold, even the volunteers complained it was colder on the train than off! Apparently it was because the engine had been started later than usual so not enough steam was available to heat the carriages. The autumnal colours of the passing countryside were amazing. To see how train travel used to be, and at a serene pace was lovely. We have recommended the railway to friends.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 November 2023
- Heidi BWelling, United Kingdom23 contributionsLovely golden woods on the Forest of Dean Steam Railway .Bit of drama getting to the station , a tree blew down & blocked the road . We dumped the car , ducked under & walked half a mile . The trip was consequently delayed by 30 minutes . The station , cafe & carriages were beautifully maintained by volunteers . The packed lunch ordered in advance was ready & tasty . The trip through the autumnal golden trees of the Forest of Dean was enjoyable . I thought it was good value , though not exciting enough for children - some got bored .Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 10 November 2023

But the phrase "could do better " please for your visitors . It was raining when I arrived an as iI joined a long queue waiting to buy my ticket, just standing out in the rain. How hard can it be to sell a train ticket ? Answer, very hard indeed when each "just touch in" card client must supply their name to the harassed clerk. As good Brits we did as we were told and got wet, and I think more questions were asked of us like when are your travelling? WHY?
I raised this with a fellow passenger who told me (I think he was chairman) that it was normal, bank rules, Brexit or COVID. If someone wants to know how passengers feel then arguing with them seems a bit odd. Surely money laundering is not a big issue on the railway so why, in the name of all that is sacred, does the railway need more information than a supermarket, filling station or GWR need. Nice and thoughtful man please don't waffle out loads of platitudes. The line, the volunteers, trains and everything is 100% wonderful except for.. , Well a really wonderful carriage, which was for railway engineers to use, was so full of the "home team " taking up most of the space really excluded us poor punters . The conversation was essentially about railway politics and was also very excluding. Of please think of customers as important , tell them why the train is delayed as we all looked out, fascinated but excluded while the point locking device sticking was unstuck.
Be a driver for a fiver sounded fun but no-one knew if it was eperating or not. Several other things to be learned but if you see interaction with the customer a challenge needing rebuttal well progress will be slow.
But if you're not worried about customer communication, this is a very fine railway in stunning countryside.
Try, lovely people, to think what your customers might like.

1st time at this railway and given the hype and positive reviews of other peoples previous visits over many years we were all looking forward to the visit.
Unfortunately most, if not all the adults in my party were very disappointed with the experience.
Concidering it was ment to be a Christmasy santa experience, the train was not looking or feeling festive at all. Apart from some green garlands hidden by the luggage rails there were no lights, no Christmas music or Christmas decorations on the train at all. There was nothing to make the experience feel special or make it different from a regular train journey other than there being a santa on the train.
The santa was lovely and took time to sit with us and talk to each child at length. The children's presents were also not too bad. These two things are the only positives of the experience.
Dietary requirements were also ignored.
It's £15 per adult as well as per each child with the child receiving a gift and the adults were to be given a mince pie and a miniature as their gift.
The online booking form asks for Dietary requirements and allergy information.
However when the adults gifts were being given out, which were paid for as part of the book price. There was nothing separate to offer the person in our party who can have quite severe reactions to certain ingredients. She was unable to have the mince pie or the miniature as they both contained dairy as well as the mince pie containing other ingredients she is unable to eat due to allergies.
We were all very disappointed with this concidering she had paid the £15 and allergy information was given when booking. Which was a few weeks in advance to our visit.
There were 10 of us there altogether,
5 adults
2 children age 2 and 6, 2 children age 10 and a 13year old.
From our party's experience I feel that the santa experience is not worth the £150 plus booking fees we paid, given there wasn't anything to make the experience feel Christmasy and for the fact allergy and dietary requirements were ignored.

First of All A Very Big Thank you to James Re: when i'd spoken to Him on Thurs 8-7-21 when making enquiries as regarding booking tickets & how to enquire how to go about getting a slight discount for Carers !!, i'd booked & paided for tickets for A Family day out for 5 Adults & 2 Children for Saturday 17th July 2021 13:50 to 15:08
James had kindly advised Me & supplied a special discount code so to help Me get discont for Carers when paying for & booking the tickets.
Sadly when We attended The Railway Station Norchard Station though We had received A Very Friendly Welcome it just seemed The People who are Decent Folks that volunteer, it just seemed like nobody was willing to properly show Us where Platform 1 was !! & with two of Our Party having walking sticks We were not aware of having to walk up a long walkway ramp to get up to the top of The Station where Platform 1 is located !!, the anouncements on the P.A speakers were very misleading & in the very hot weather it was hard work & not knowing sooner We struggled & Platform 1 according to The Staff was signed as Platform 3.
Other issues there was a Big walk in tent being used to help dry painted benches ( very potent paint at that ) to people with sensory issues & three of Our party having Autism that was not good at all !! & instead of the tent being an area to sit in out of the scorching heat for shade !! it was just not well planned at all.
The Cafe having very limited sitting due to current Covid Ruling I understand but again nobody was forth coming & no shaded sitting was a nightmare !!, I get that nobody can control the weather but surely every whether situation should be better pre planned & not have tents being used for benches to be dryed after having being pained.

We arrived 30mins before the train time to allow for baby nappy change in the car etc. Took baby in her sling as buggy not required. Only needed to queue for 10 minutes before getting on the train. Very organised to ensure socially distancing. As I had asked for more space when booking the staff kindly reserved a booth for us which was much easier with baby on board (11months old). Lovely to enjoy the experience over lunch, available to buy at the local cafe before boarding. We were able to step off at each of the three stops and take some pictures. It’s less about the scenery as it’s short trips between the stations but long enough to enjoy the train experience.
Donation car park fee.
We booked 12pm tickets and then visited Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail afterwards as it was only 10mins away.

Spent a day going back and forth on the steam train and the diesel trail on the Dean forest railway. To be honest the train doesn’t go very far and most of the time was spent with the engine changing ends of the carriages to do the return runs. We purchased a round run ticket and we were told by the ticket lady that once we had done that we could pop on to the diesel train and continue to go back and forth on the line getting on and off at any station as it turned out we could alternate on either steam or diesel on this day so we had great fun meeting new people on each run. Lydney has not got a lot to see but you can go to either the harbour or the village, at the other end of the line is a really nice pub with lovely food would highly recommend. The trains run all day some people might not want to spend all day and might not think it worth the money however we enjoyed it especially the little museum and second had book shop where I bought some great second hand puzzles. The gift shop was good too!! Also the cafe very reasonably priced and home made cakes and the pasties were very tasty indeed. It was busy in the afternoon so good idea to book its dog friendly as well dogs travel for a small fee I believe but I could be wrong. No toilets on the trains themselves but facilities at every station including disabled you can also take wheelchairs or mobility scooters onto the train or just leave them at the main station where you start from car parking is free, staff were lovely with plenty of knowledge all are volunteers . All in all we had a great time.

This is the third time we've done the Santa Special and although still quite enjoyable, (for the adults at least), our grandchildren, 3 of whom had travelled from London, weren't all that impressed!
Firstly, the guard sent us to the wrong seats in the wrong carriage which almost caused a minor disagreement among passengers until we realised we had been sent to the wrong carriage!
Secondly, Santa came through the carriage and spoke individually to all the groups of passengers, asking the children what they would like for Christmas raising expectations. Unfortunately though, the elves didn't follow him with sacks of gifts as in previous years and children were left a little confused and disappointed when he moved away without leaving a present.
On arrival at Lydney Halt, we were advised over the tannoy that we had to leave the train and form a queue at the station building to collect presents from there. Fortunately, although chilly it was reasonably dry. However, one of our gifts was found to be broken on opening it and although a replacement was provided, it was another disappointment for our 3 year old grandchild.
Thirdly, adults are offered a miniature bottle of spirits and a mince pie. The only miniature availble was Baileys whereas in previous years there has been a choice, (my wife and I don't like Baileys and so we only had a mince pie).
These trips are not cheap and I'm not sure we had particularly good value for money and may think twice before deciding to go again next year which is a shame as it is a lovely thing to do for the grandkids at Christmas.
I appreciate these trips are staffed by volunteers but this trip certainly wasn't up to the standard of previous years and if standards aren't maintained passengers will be lost to the detriment of the whole of the DFR heritage line.

Paid £168 to basically sit at either end of the track for 20 mins each way. It was very stop/start. Disappointed not to feel the train get going so to speak. I’m not a great train enthusiast so had no real expectation but my children and elderly parents all said the same. I will say the bacon roll and hot drink (that was kindly subbed for a cold drink due to the warm weather) in the cafe was a slick operation. Everyone associated with the operation was polite and courteous but I just feel the journey needs some alteration. I don’t think I am the first reviewer to suggest that either.

I did email the managers email address that I was given and looks like I've been ignored
We have never been on the railway train before,
And as our booking was on sunday the 3rd october 2021, my friend enquired for me on saturday the 2nd what we needed to do, directions and help with my nan as she needed aid with a wheelchair, she was told to tell us to pick one up at the booking office in the morning,
so our advice wasnt to park in the disabled bay, right next to the ticket office, we didnt even know about it,
Fortunately we found whilst parking in the car park farthest away, a security guard we think and asked for help with a wheel chair,
But even he didnt tell us there was disabled parking further up which would've saved us waiting in the cold drizzle,
then we was finally brought a wheelchair with flat punctured wheels, as you can imagine literally struggling to get my nan to the platform in this, with two young children that have disabilities,
We then end up struggling past the disabled parking on our way and to be honest at this point I'm not happy.
so im rushing now,
We had to collect our afternoon tea, to find when we got on the train we wasn't allocated seating,
The seats all said reserved and we didnt know where we were allowed to sit, and people were pushing and shoving us and my poor nan out the way,
I'm holding this afternoon tea in a paper bag and it's getting squashed and hot drinks in my hands aswel.
We finally managed to sit down and by that time i just wanted to burst into tears, what was supposed to be something nice and enjoyable for my nan turned out to be really unorganised and stressful,
the ticket officers at the railway station when boarding didnt even ask to see our wrist bands, infact we never even had chance to put them on, I had spent around £80 for that, and your shop manager said there was nothing more he could do, than help me to sort my carers payment so i was refunded £7 that was owed to me and basically he couldnt do anymore to help, goodbye
Not even a free return ticket was offered which I thought was pretty poor

We arrived on a day with no trains running, but Parkend Station was open to visitors with a book shop in the ticket office/waiting room full of interesting and well priced items. Lots of volunteers working hard and everything looking well cared for and full of authentic railway feel. Whitecroft Station was not open and looks a bit neglected with a signal box in need of TLC and railway rolling stock stored on a partial passing loop. We couldn't get near Norchard or Lydney thanks to extensive road closures.

Absolutely, dogs are welcome on the standard train services for £2, but it's worth checking on the website for special events (for example they aren't allowed on the evening trains with dining on board).
