Imagine a rat climbing up inside your dress and you struggling to get it out. That is what happened to me when I decided to sit in the sand in this beach to enjoy some peaceful time.

That day Tamil Nadu Tourism Department had scheduled some tourism festival in the Shore Temple and huge number of local crowd came dressed up in red clothes (they were not the performers but might be invitees or supporters, I am not sure). So the beach was extremely crowded which huge amount of waste generated and dumped in the beach itself. I feel it's high time the government should take example from its neighbouring territory Pondicherry regarding the cleanliness of its beaches. The shops were literally on the edge of water and so when the waves turned big they washed away the plastic wastes of these shops itself and the shopkeepers made no attempt to clean the mess.

Literally rats were coming due to that and as we went in the evening we could not see these little creatures. We sat at a distance away from the mess to get some peaceful time when a rat, probably in an attempt to escape from the crowd straight away climbed up my legs. I started panicking and almost created a scene in public until I finally managed to shake the poor creature away from under my long dress.

I have visited many beaches in India but never experienced this level of dirtiness in a beach and never seen at least rats roaming.

It is better to enjoy the beach near Marmoris Restaurant which was much cleaner and limited to only its customers.

Beautiful bay and the beach itself is nice. Shame that there is rubbish everywhere but this is India so it’s a surprise if somewhere isn’t littered with trash let’s face it. My issue is that we saw 6 dead giant sea turtles along the beach. Apparently this is a regular thing that no one seems to be doing anything about. Lots of tourists come here so why just leave them on the beach, it’s so distressing for people to see. If they aren’t going to solve the problem of why these beautiful creatures are being killed in the first place (by the fisherman), then someone should atleast move them so tourists first impression of this town isn’t heartbreak

This is main  and historic beach of mahabalipuram. Famous Shore Temple situated on the beach. This Beach is more crowded in the evening. Beach is very untidy due to huge fastfood stall and some people. You can enjoy horse and camel riding. You can taste here famous goli soda. From entrance to beach a long sandy walk, you may feel irritated. You should carry sunglasses and cap during summer.

The beach was a disappointment unfortunately. It has a very nice chill vibe to it, and the waves really make a large sand embankment. However, it is pretty busy, even on a weekend.

It's popular with local tourists, but also with other locals who constantly bother you. Some of them bother you for things like selling stuff or services like horse-riding. Others were beggars, but they were really persistent and doing upsetting things like hurting a friendly dog in front of us for money.

On top of all this, the beach is also dirty and doesn't have any toilet or shower facilities.

I recommend going for a stroll here, but nothing more, it's really hard to relax here - perhaps it would be better on a private beach nearby.

Spending time in Blu Radisson resort we walked along this fascinating beach twice a day or more. Always interesting. Full of life. Beautiful people enjoying themselves, often entire families. Ladies bathing in their colorful dresses. Food stalls and boats. It gets busy near the fishing village area, and more crowded. The culmination of our walk was always the Temple majestically towering over the beach. While visiting the area enjoy this fascinating beach!

Dirty beach. Strewn with rubbish. As you walk along signs that oil also pollutes the sands. Very unpleasant and depressing. The locals and the authorities should clean this place up, it’s a health hazard and a disgrace. Do not visit Mahabalipuram expecting a beach holiday. Such a shame.

The beach was clean enough, but we went during the night time, when there were very less people, and it was raining.

Nice beach which also has shore temple near by. Horse riding is available on the beach. Can find small shops selling ornaments, decoratives, key chains etc made of shells. Waves were coming high in the month of July, so it's not good to go deep in the water. Beach is maintained good.

The waves in Bay of Bengal of usually larger than seen in west coast of India. And thats the reason this beach is so scenic. In fact you can see a lot of foreigners and local surfers surfing here.. the views are splendid specially during the sunrise. But there is an issue too with this beach. Since the fishermen colony is close its not unexpected to see faeces on the beech. I happen to have such dirty encounters and that almost spoiled the mood.

It's a historic place with lots of heritage. Other than the monuments nothing has been maintained by the local authorities. City is filthy and the beach is equally dirty. Hope the government will do something about it. Certainly wont recommend anyone going to the beach area.
