Binsar is a wild life sanctuary close to Almora. You can drive up to the sanctuary check post, pay the fees (Rs 150 per Indian tourist and Rs 250 per vehicle) to enter the sanctuary and drive 10km through the sanctuary along a narrow single lane road which is in poor condition. If you are lucky you may spot some wild animals. Driving itself is an adventure when you have traffic coming from the opposite direction and it is scary passing each other with a steep drop on your side of the road without any guard rail. At the end of the 10km drive you have to park your vehicle and trek 2 kms to "Zero Point". Its a long trek which is quite steep for those who are not physically active. Carry sufficient water. At "Zero Point" there is a small watch tower which you can climb and look into the valley. The view is mostly obscured and if you are lucky you could even catch a glimpse of the snow clad mountains or so it is said. We weren't lucky. Then we trekked back to the car and drove down and exited the sanctuary. The whole trip took about two and half hours starting from the check post and back to it. It would be worth your while only if you are a keen bird watcher or working free lance for National Geographic or similar publications. Else, the only reason you need to go there is if you have plenty of time to spare. There is a hotel along the drive where you could stay in case you are a nature lover of the variety mentioned earlier. There is a restaurant as well on the way but they do not entertain customers other than during specific hours.

If you want to visit Kumaon, you may spend here one night. It is quite, calm peaceful. A paradose for bird lovers and photographers. We have spent 2nights here at KMVN TRH. Lovely experience but please do not expect too much amenities or luxury. As it is a place inside in forest area solar power is the only saviour and that too for 3hrs in the evening. But I hope that would be not a great issue for nature lovers and travellers not so called tourists.

Last time couldn’t stay . This time stayed in binsar kmvn. The sanctuary is pure bliss . You can walk to the viewpoint. The walk is refreshing. Binsar kmvn is in great location. Although only kmvn where most of the stuff was a bit arrogant . Maybe because of the monopoly. A smiling staff would have made the stay even better.
Between surprisingly not too many birds in binsar. Found a lot near munsiary

After paying requisite fee we entered in the Binsar Wildlife sanctuary. Place is good for visit. But we returned from mid as road was not good. Our bolero neo sticked in concrete and soil. Authorities are taking entry fees from visitors but do not providing good and safe road to visitors. If you are travelling with kids, please avoid to visit this place.
My humble request to authorities to provide visitors a good and safe road.

It is a good place for people who want the natural beauty. The view from zero point is superb. You can see snow filled Himalayan mountain peaks from here clearly. The forest is dense and so peaceful that you can feel silence of nature while waking in the sanctuary

The roads leading to the guest house on the top ( 10 kms) are very narrow but adventures to drive on. The 2 km trek from the guest house to zero point has beautiful views, surrounded by lush green trees and occasions growl of animals.

The Binsar forest is good to see sunset in the evening. It is approx 7000 ft" from the sea level, its also known as high altitude forest in Kumaon sector of Uttarakhand. But there no animal can be seen here, the entrance of the forest is INR 150/-per person, car entrance INR 250/- just waste of money & time.

When I first went through Binsar in 1991 I did pay much heed as I was coming out from a strenous trek from Munshiyari, Mailam Glacier via Chakori. But this beautiful scenic small hill station always made a dent somewhere in my memory.
So this time after spending my stipulated stay in Dhikala, Corbett, I decided to make one more trip to Binsar via the princely Almora to see and feel the aura of its leopard infested forests and the grand view of the Trishul and Panchachulli Range of Himalayas. It was April and Binsar was blazing with a riot of colours from the different flowers of the various unknown trees.
I had booked Khaali Resort and this baronistic mansion with wide double decker cottages, a breathtaking library and the mouth watering vegeterian meals just floored me. From the garden itself I was viewing the brilliant snow capped mountain ranges glistening in the sun at dawn. The heat of the land has resulted in forest fires at parts so we could easily spot barking deers. Birding in Binsar especially if Mohan of Khali escorts you can be an endeavour day in day out. It is actually a paradise for bird lovers. A trip to Binsar Top in a clear day will reward you a breathtaking view of the Trishul Ranges. There is a vibrant flower called Evening Primrose which sprouts out in the evening and dies in the morning and will greet you warmly from the gardens of Khali.
The sunset in the evening is just breathtaking and the colour of the sky from Red to Indigo will always linger in my memory.
The chill of the night will may occasionaelly be disturbed by a growl from a wandering leopard as the beast comes in near vicinity of GMVN and occasionally near Khali too.

I don’t know what heaven looks like…Binsar comes to my mind every time I think of it!
If you want to unwind yourself, relax, sooth your senses, be in the midst of nature- then Binsar is the place to be.
Binsar is a wildlife sanctuary located at a distance of approximately 126 kms from Kathgodam, Uttarakhand (the closest railway station to the place). For those who are familiar to Kumaon, its 33 kms from Almora. It takes around 45 mins to reach there from the main town, Almora.
With Pine at lower end, oak and rhododendron at higher altitude, you will find hanging mosses and colourful flowers adorning the slopes. Panoramic view of the Kumaon Himalayas, a stretch of almost 300 kms, is simply mesmerizing.
Read on… open the windows of your imagination!
The forest guard opens the toll gate and you enter the Wildlife Sanctuary. There are still some 8 kms to be covered and you are on a meandering road surrounded by dense forest on both the sides. You can hear the sound of cricket and birds chirping. Its quiet, its green and with every deep breath you take-the clear air begins to sooth your senses!
On reaching the destination you see a leveled ground in between two hills. There is an old Shiva temple at the farthest end of the small plain area. Built of stones, this temple resembles exactly like the one most of us drew when we were kids—with a small bridge and water flowing underneath. Take the road uphill from right next to the temple. After about 5 minutes of steep ride you are there! You will find yourself on top of a hill, in the midst of forest with a magnificent view of the Himalayas.
Rising above the clouds! Your wish to ever stay in a place like this is made true by ‘The Grand Oak Manor’. An old British building brought to life. The way the resort has been built, its interiors and old photographs adorning the lobby, corridors and hall take you back in time. Every room has a balcony for a fantastic view of the hills. Furniture is all old wooden style in line with the era. The service is at its best even at such a remote location, whether it is electricity or hot water supply or food. Well, if you think that at a sanctuary good food is hard to find, you are in for a surprise. The Grand oak Manor offers you cuisines from around the world.
What all can you do here? Well, in the morning you can trek to Jhandi dhar and see the sunrise from behind the Kumaon hills. The walk to Jhandi dhar itself is quite refreshing.
During the day time you can just laze around and relax, or spend time admiring the natural beauty around. In the afternoon, you can go for a walk around the resort in the forest or read a book.
It is a perfect place for people who love to write, paint or meditate and excellent for trekkers and those who like exploring. The place offers you so much that you won’t even realize when the day has ended.
A blissful experience you can’t miss!

Binsar wildlife sanctuary is situated 25 km from almora in uttarakhand. This sanctuary is on the top the hill. Its area is almost 45 km2.
I went to Binsar in winter. I drove my car from delhi and spent a night in almora. Next day in the morning I started my journey for Binsar. On the way I found the the beauty of snow caped Himalaya. It looks like golden crown when the ray of sun fall on the snow cape peaks.
We reach sanctuary gate after 1 hour. At the sanctuary gate (Forest check post) we collect gate pass. They took Rs. 150/ per head and Rs. 250/ for the vechiles. After collecting pass we moved for the park. The road is narrow but road condition is very good.
There are some hotel inside the sanctuary. You can prebook those hotel online. There are one GMVN hotel also. Till that hotel we reached by car. Then we started walking to reach zero point. This is approx. 2 kilometer walking distance to reach zero point. This trail is fully covered by big trees. So sun light can not enter there. After reaching zero point we found a amazing view of long range of snow caped mountain. There is a watch tower. To get more clear view you can ride there.Pin drop silence and green nature and snow caped himalaya, all are mind blowing.
We found variety of Birds and deer, fox etc.
Kasar Devi temple is located around 9 km from Almora. It gained recognition in 1890's when Swami Vivekananda meditated there. We visited this temple also at the time of returning from Binsar to almora.
Tourist can easily reach Binsrar. Kathgodam is nearest railway station. From kathdgodam you can take a public bus till Almora. From almora you have to hire a car for full day. Cost will be around Rs1000 to 1500. Otherwise from Nainital you can hire a car to reach Binsar.

Hi, I would be travelling solo. Can anyone tell me if there are cabs for going from sanctuary gate till Zero point?
Written 5 January 2019
No. It's a pretty isolated place and not too many people. But then I was there in December and did not see any cab at the gate. Better to take your own vehicle.
Written 23 February 2019
1. Is there local trekking assistance available.
2. what time does the bus leave from binsar to kathgodam to reach by 8:pm at kathgodam
3. Is it a do it yourself trek or a booking is advisable and if yes through whom.
Written 27 August 2018
You can hire any vehicle or go by your own as buses will not ply till Binsar...Till Almora & Ksardevi Buses or Local taxis will be available anyway.
From Almora there are regular buses & taxis on regular basis.
It's a kind of nature walk only & you can explore it yourself.Try to avoid odd hours(Night) as entry check will be there at Forest security gates..
Written 29 August 2018
Yes easily..!!!!
There are some curves near Kainchi ( Bhowali) & Binsar itself.
If you are comfortable with hilly drive than it's not a big deal.We had taken Chevrolet there..
Don't forget to try Dolma's momos in kasardevi.

How is the road condition to Binsar Wild Life Sanctuary and Jageshwar Temple
from Almora?
Written 22 April 2018
If v talk avout Jageshwar Temple , then road system from Almora is pretty much good . On the way u can also visit Golu devta mandir , which is really famous there .
On the other hand if v'll talk about BWS , reaching this spot is very easy 1'ce u take ur entry ricket & go inside ur cab/jeep is allowed to go halway after then u will have to go on foot . There r several points inside the sanctuary where u will feel that ur car might fall in the deep Valley. Roads r a bit dangerous bt nt everywhere . Trekking road is in good condition & u'll definitely make memories of it .
Hope i answered well !
Cheers 👍
