The Railway! - and Fish ‘n’Chips to really enjoy!
The RHDR is an absolute must if you should find yourself in the Romney Marsh area of Kent. It is the worlds smallest public railway and has been running continually since 1929, including during WW2 when it had special duties. The rolling stock is 1/3 scale of a full sized British railway and the engines themselves are model masterpieces of serious engineering. Some of the engines have run continually since the track was first laid and were used in the building of the railway. It is a delight for small children and adults alike, and is also used by locals as a way of travelling on a daily basis. As well as great fun, it will take you to some of the more interesting places along the coast and right up to the lighthouse at Dungeness, and the local wildlife sanctuary. Hythe, the terminus at the other end of the line is also worth a visit as a typical old English coastal town - do not forget to visit the Skull crypt at the church, bizarre but so interesting! Great Fish’n’Chips at many places along the line, and especially at Hythe where you have the choice of rough and ready but always delicious near the fishing beach, or in restaurant splendour just a short walk away along the promenade!

The landscape is wonderful and so different along the journey … Brilliant in every way and I highly recommend this to everyone who is in the area and they always say what a brilliant day out . Love it just a shame is a 4 hour trip from my home but at least am every visit is extra special.

    Well worth a visit
having booked a long weekend for a family getaway we decided to have a day out at the railway, when we arrived we were unaware that there was a special event on. But really glad it was. We had a fantastic day! Special thanks to Dean at Romney Sands for his helpful and informative attitude helping us to plan our day so we could get back to where we were staying. Thank you.

    Steam gala in May.
We went to the railway on their steam gala. There were at least 6 steam trains running giving a good varied view of them. Being one third scale the trains are great to be able to view, the carriages are also quite small and can be difficult to enter and exit but you would not expect anything else with this scale. We went the whole length of the railway from Hythe to Dungeness and stopping at New Romney on our return. New Romney is wheelchair accessible for all of their facilities and there are wheelchair accessible carriages as well. Facilities at all stations were kept in a tidy condition. The cafe/shop at Dungeness looks fairly new and has a good range of snacks and drinks as do the others at the stations. All the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We has a really good day out as seemed a lot of other people we spoke to did as well.

    Amazing visit for gala
Visited for the annual gala this May, after an absence of about four years. Still a wonderful experience. Extraordinary little engines, glorious varied scenery, friendly staff and everything running like clockwork. The RHDR really is a World Class attraction.

    Always Worth A Visit
Another excellent day on the RH&DR. The all day rover ticket allows you to travel at your leisure to explore the whole line. Really good to see that there is now much better access to view the engine shed. The cafe at New Romney is excellent and the model railway, included in the ticket, well worth a visit. The souvenir shop is of a reasonable size and has various RH&DR memorabilia as well as more generic items. Good facilities at both Dungeness and Hythe. The latter has a new/temporary shop and cafe due to structural problems with the old one. As it was a couple of days before a gala event there were some visiting engines running for extra interest.

A great day out for anyone
It must be 40 years since I last rode on the railway and the engines are just as pristine as ever, the paintwork is like a mirror. Time constraints meant we could only do New Romney to Dungeness and back plus a visit to the model railway layout. Everywhere was clean and tidy, staff very friendly and helpful. The café at Dungeness was spotless and served a nice coffee. A day out on the railway is really worthwhile especially if the weather is good. One can hop-on/hop-off as you wish during the journey, especially if starting from Hythe. Not expensive.

    Marsh Steam
Excellent experience, we became members recently and took advantage of an annual free return trip. Exceedingly great fun travelling across the marsh. We alighted at Romney Sands and walked to the famous Pilot pub for a delicious fish and chips lunch. We then walked on to Dungeness Station , where visited the cafe , before boarding the train for a return journey to Hythe station . Great day , give it a go !

    Excellent day out
A really well run and organised narrow gauge railway. Unusual for narrow gauge railways it runs for 13 miles to Dungeness which is a experience in itself. They have a cafe at Dungeness that caters for most tastes and is far better that the local pub nearby.

    Highly enjoyable experience
Pre booked tickets and were allocated a coach number. Parking our motorhome near the station worked really well but noted the Hythe car park is quite limited in numbers and ed precluded u de 0arking there,. We tode from Hythe to Dungeness with our Westie Oscar. We all love the journey. It was a delight to get up close to some magnificent (but small in scale) steam powered locomotives. Stations were well cared for. Staff and volunteers were great to interact with. Dungeness has a feel all of its own and is a mesmerising place to be in and look upon. Cafe and shop at Dungeness was dog friendly, modern and pleasant to be in. Staff at the shop and platform were pleasantly chatty. Summary; highly enjoyable experience

We rode the train from Hythe to Dungeness and back, and we had a great time. We thought the tickets were quite expensive when we booked them, but it made perfect sense when we arrived and it was worth every penny! The train was really cute and everything was clean and well looked-after. The stations that we went through were all nicely decorated with flowers etc., and the train is so small that it feels like a real experience.

A fantastic Christmas experience! The kids absolutely loved it! Lovely refreshments at Hythe before we saw Santa. The grotto at Hythe was lovely and Santa took his time speaking to every child ( all 7 of them!!) the presents were all good quality. They also had a hall with different activities and crafts but unfortunately there wasn't time to do that. We will be returning next year - worth every penny!!

We have been visiting The Santa Special for many years, but our last visit was before Lockdown. It was a jolly well organised experience and our little grandson who is 2 loved every minute. I do wonder why the destination was swapped as before we questioned inside for Santa in a little grotto. This time we were outside for ages queuing. We all agreed that it was great, but preferred it when we saw Santa at New Romney. I’d love to know why it was changed.

We’ve been coming to the Santa Specials for the past ten years. It’s always a great family outing but this year’s was definitely the best so far! The new location for Santa’s grotto was perfect, the decor was charming and the presents for the children very thoughtfully chosen. Finally, the organisation and catering worked like clockwork. We loved the whole experience.

I would like to congratulate the railway for its absolutely incredible Santa's Special trip and experience. You probably won't be able to book for this year, but put it on your 24 calendar to book fir next year. The experience is worth every single penny, it's magical, enchanting and the kids loved it. This year we took a later train as it was getting dark, and oh boy! The fairy lights and the atmosphere at Hythe station was amazing. For kids and parents alike this is a must do trip.

The RHDR is wonderful day out for anybody and everybody. We booked the stylish vintage buffet car Gladys for a special memorial train ride, hosted by the amazing Sam, who was full of fun tidbits about the history and inner workings of the line itself.

Wonderful trip in the bar cart to Dungeness with family and friends. We enjoyed some drinks reasonably priced and had a great day out. Picnic on the beach and a trip up the lighthouse (no good if you don’t like heights). We all had a great day and ages ranged from 5 to 70. Lots of fun for all.

I haven't been here for some years, We brought our 5 year old grandson for a treat. We only went from New Romney to Dungerness, £40 just for that small trip. I asked if the ticket allowed 2 or more trips to said station, got a big no , found ,the lady at the ticket office very unfriendly . In my opinion it is way too expensive for such a little trip. However my grandson had a fabulous time, the model train layout is great, the train driver was very friendly.
