- JeromyE2015Edmonton, Canada18 contributionsMy first trip to a vinyreard and it was remarkable. This was my first wine tour at a vinyerad. Garry was our guide for the afternoon. It was clear Garry deeply enjoys his role, the property, and history of the family who created this vinyeard. Some guests did ask questions, Garry met them with kind and professional answers. Should you be treated to an afternoon here, it will be very well spent with Garry as your guide. I am a novice at wine interests. I can not speak to the tastes that were offered, in a technical manner. I hope another review may answer that for you. However, I was able to taste the differences in the wines provided as they were described and presented to the group. The vista of the valley, river, forested hillsides, rows of vines, were something only nature could currate.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 June 2024

100% echo a previous review where the "wine was good but the attitude of the staff made it a disappointing experience". I wish I could give a zero based on the manager alone.
I have been a fan of Gray Monk for years and have visited the tasting room a number of times and had never had the opportunity to sit down at the restaurant. My partner and I, along with 3 other couples signed up for a Wine Tour to celebrate a special occasion, with Grey Monk being the last destination, long story short, there seemed to have been a mix up with the restaurant and the tour company.
In trying to clarify where things had gone wrong and attempting to find a resolution, the manager Michaela had taken over, and this was truthfully the worst customer service I have ever received. Without exaggeration, I have received better, more fair and level headed service at fast food restaurants. Michaela was cold, condescending, and downright rude. As the tasting room had closed for the evening and we were not able to do a tasting as planned, we were hoping to bring home a case of wine from our favorite winery and had asked to sample the wine prior to committing to a case, she had refused this request saying that we were asking her to give away something for free, she proceeded to tell us we were wasting her time in trying to get this said "free tasting" when we had paid for a wine tasting through our tour company to begin, were dining with them and were hoping to support the business further by buying multiple cases. We had simply wanted a frame of reference for what we were buying and explained we didn't require the full sommelier explanation or expect a full tasting experience. She explained once again she couldn't give it away for free and that we were free to buy a flight if we wanted to try the wine. It appeared that she could have cared less about our business. Towards the end of the night she had disclosed to us that this was in fact an oversight on her end and she had received an email from the tour owner explaining what was now the mix up, yet there was no apology or attempt to make it right. It seemed that she was determined to stick to a principle rather than customer experience or bigger picture business objective of running a successful restaurant.
On a more positive note, our server Devon /Devin really salvaged our night. She was knowledgeable. friendly and made the best of a bad situation. We were a table that was ready to leave based on our experience with the manager but she really was able to blow us away with her service which was not easy after the conversation and experience we had with Michaela. I'm very sorry you had to be lumped in with this poor review.
This experience with The Lookout Leadership team alone has completely changed my perspective, I will never return, recommend or buy their wines again. Don't waste your money, more importantly your time.
Go to 50th Parallel - they have the best service around, we went there the next night and it was NIGHT and day. The food, service and wine will blow you away.

This was the second time I have taken guests here within the last month. The first time was great- everyone was wearing masks or face shields in the both the restaurant and tasting room. But now I see some of the people giving the Wine tasting experience are not wearing either. Yes there is plexi-glass between us but she is talking right into our wine glasses as she pours the wine. I did not feel as safe and will not go back until they improve their safety standards. With the numbers of Covid rising in our area - it seemed to us they are going the wrong direction to do their part to stop the spread. I hope anyone going here demands these safety measures. It’s a shame when we are doing our part to try to help the economy by venturing out for dinner, but cannot feel safe in doing so.

Beautiful views, location and wine BUT! This Sunday lunch wants to be a treat for my birthday. I was very much looking forward to it. It was pre-booked. I am gluten intolerant and the restaurant was very helpful in making adjustments to the main dish I ordered, which was the WFF Burger. I couldn’t have the batter or bun so they gave me mushrooms barely grilled. How was this a burger?? There was no patty of any kind, and a really over mayonnaised simple green salad for $28. Yes I did complain at the time. There was no compensation offered either food wise or on the final bill. Very disappointing! Only 3 tables were occupied. Better to save your reputation and keep your restaurant closed if you can’t make the effort to serve decent food.

Had a ‘private’ tasting of premium wines July 2nd, 2021 with my family. The cost was approximately $200 and was originally stated that we would be on the deck with beautiful views. Switched to an inside tasting and we’re told they changed it July 1 with no notification. We were told the room was spectacular or we could do it on the deck but no seating would be provided. Opted for the room, found we were with approximately 20 others, seated on a couch (only seating with a couch rather than table) was so uncomfortable that my feet were not touching the ground. The room was ok at best. Asked for a table like everyone else, the man leading the tasting made a statement to the group that the tasting was delayed because of our seating change. Then made a point if we were talking to stop and ask us to pay attention. The whole experience was very disappointing for our family. Have had exceptional tastings at Hester Creek and numerous wineries throughout the Okanagan. Was the first experience I’ve been embarrassed to organize and take guests.

We enjoyed the wine tasting and bought 15 bottles of wine, however the wine tasting fee was not deducted. Other wineries waive the fee if you purchase wine. We asked about deducting the fee and were told no. There are lots of other wineries, so we'll be frequenting others now.

My husband and I decided to stop in for a late lunch on our anniversary. Surprisingly the parking lot was 3/4 empty. We went to the LookOut restaurant and asked for a table outside on the patio as it was a beautiful sunny day. The hostess brought us to the deck and began to seat us at a table and we asked if we could sit on against the edge so we could enjoy the view. She told us those tables were only for guests who have reservations. There was at least five empty tables. When our waitress came we asked if people dont show up for their reservations can we move to a table with a lake view. She said she would ask the manager and came back to the table and said unfortunately she was told “No” We were there from 130-3 in the afternoon. Those same tables sat empty and as people left after lunch they were almost all empty along the patio railing. As we were leaving the male manager at the front desk, I then told him how disappointing it was that we were not accommodated in our request to have a table overlooking the lake when they sat empty the entire time. I told him in high season I could appreciate that but on a day when the restaurant was completely empty holding tables? When you are dropping 150.00 for a bottle of wine and an appetizer and be treated like a second class citizen because we didn’t have a reservation? The manager shrugged his shoulders and walked away down the stairs. Not even an acknowledgement or apology on his lack of professionalism. Anyways we went up the road to another winery with the same view, better menu and delightful staff.

Especially with the current state of things, Grey Monk really had their set up dialed in and their process very straightforward. I felt very safe and loved that they don’t charge a tasting fee even though I have no problems paying for one. Despite having a large catalog of wines, they only pour four (All which are quite easy to get in the liquor store). I Would have liked to test some of the winery only offerings but this wasn’t even an option. This could be improved by maybe having four for free but a charge to taste some of the more unique wines. Not to mention the four they poured weren’t strong enough to make me trust the rest blind. Still a nice stop and the staff were friendly.

We have visited Gray Monk and purchased outstanding wines in the past. We have a planned a trip next week and hoped to purchase more. However, we have both been vaccinated since March, 2021 but will absolutely NOT show our proof of vaccination to ANY business. This is a violation of our medical privacy and the first step to insidious control of people. Will all employees line up and show us their cards?
Either Vaccines work or they don't, and until business pushes back against infringement on free enterprise, we will not spend our hard earned, NOT government provided, dollars where we are unwelcome. We'll be packing our own food if we bother to go at all now.

Karen was our tour guide today, and she explained the lengthy and involved process to create this excellent tasting wine.

They’ve been doing it a long time, and their experience shows through in a very good Pinot Gris wine at a good price point.
We went back inside and took an elevator down into the wine cellar, where the magic happens. We saw their massive stainless steel tanks, along with barrel storage, and these giant oak ‘foutres’ (foo-trah) they hold 2000 L of wine! They are used to intensify color of the wine, and add a tiny bit of oak flavor and aroma to add to the complexity of the wine.
Next was the wine library… Not a room filled with books, a room filled with different vintages of their wine. In the center was a giant table. There was a lot of different varieties of wine in this room, some very old. They even had some wine bottles that were signed by the 3 Tenors when they were in the area. That’s right, Pavarotti.
Our tour was concluded with a glass of their Meritage wine back in the tasting room. Karen was leading the tour, and there was also a woman named Jen who answered a lot of questions that we had. It was a very informative and tasty wine touring experience. A gentleman named Ross was in the tasting room, and was also a wealth of knowledge regarding their wines, and the winery itself.

Had some spare time in Lake Country and checked out two wineries. The other which I won't mention was awful, but Grey Monk saved the day. I'm ok to splurge on wine, but for the price I expect quality. Grey Monk was reasonably priced specific to the quality and the wine tasting staff were fantastic. I've kept going back to this place as its staff are very down to earth and not snooty and rude like the other winery in the area I had been to further north.

I am wondering if the tasting room/gift shop is pet friendly. I appreciate the restaurant in off limits to dogs for hygienic reasons. What does one do with the family dog when visiting wineries? Leaving him in the car during hot weather is not an option.
