Very helpful information by knowledgeable and friendly steward. A very moving experience. We learned of the history and famous characters who passed through here- including Cardinal Wolsey. Also the rector of Eyam - the plague village in Derbyshire- is buried. Very moving- are the sculptures of the stations of the cross and the modern stained glass window dedicated to the dead of WW1. See also the sculpture of Christ above the nave.

Sounds like you took a lot in James - so glad you enjoyed your visit. It's one of those places you could visit a hundred times, and each time you'd pick up some new but equally fascinating. Thanks for taking the time to write such a lovely review

We visited Southwell for the weekend of my 71st Birthday and stayed at the famous Saracens Head which is just across the road from the Minster. The Minster (or Cathedral) is magnificent, reminding me of the Basilica of St Foy at Conques in S. France - very romanesque, but with a Gothic window in the front facade and other gothic details. The assemblage of Green Men in the Chapter house is the finest in the world (no exaggeration!). It was closed for renovation on this visit, but we've seen them before - a romanesque temple in the centre of England - Wonderful!

Incredible historical architecture and artefacts. Chapter house sadly closed until 2021 but will return then and was still very worthwhile.

So glad you enjoyed your visit. We have hundreds of grotesques - each individually carved by hand hundreds of years ago - shows what talent the stonemasons had even with the most basic of tools. Come back again soon as everytime you look I'm sure you'll find a new one
