We visit this amazing building, this morning. It's a pretty space and clever build on the cliff over viewing caletha. We where amazed by the architecture of the building and would love to call it our home. The art was contemporary and modern, local artists and more famous Portuguese artists. The quality was good and nice presented in the spaces.... More

We are staying in Calheta and noticed the grey building on top of the cliffs. Discovering it was a gallery of modern art raised our interest but we didn't have high expectations. It would be a challenge to access without a car but if you do make it it's well worthwhile . A beautiful space with beautiful art . I... More

Wonderful views, great cafe...and very stimulating art, both semi-traditional and modern. If you are not into art, just go visit the cafe and admire the area.

There are many beautiful buildings in Madeira which enhance the scenery. This is the exception. Hard blocks of uncompromising stone. Walking between them felt like walking in a prison. The views from the Center are fantastic, and that was really what brought us here. Don't miss the old manor house just above the modern buildings. Inside was a fascinating temporary... More

This art gallery has an excellent collection of contemporary art . The building itself is constructed in a very modern way, and the architecture is very interesting. If you're not driving , then it's quite tricky to get to the gallery as the walk is quite steep and very uphill. The bus service isn't very frequent. The directions to the... More

As mentioned in the previous comments this place is well worth visiting but finding the entrance is a challenge! It isnt sign posted at all . The art is to my liking but probably not to all. Give it a go you might learn something

This impressive modern building sits on a sea cliff above Calheta about 30minutes west of Funchal. The building is hard to miss but the actual entrance to the gallery is not well signposted. There were very few people around and in fact we were the only visitors in the Gallery at 10am on a Thursday in July. The art was... More

Our feeling when visiting this amazing building with great views is that it is not well explored. The place has everything to be THE cultural centre of the island, there's even an auditorium for cinema, congresses, whatever. The bookshop is poor. The vast space seems to be too much for what they show. We definitely recommend Casa das Mudas, but... More

Did you know that the original "casa das Mudas" was made of stone and not like it is today (painted in pink - I wonder who was the "bright head" that had that idea). It's a excelente contemporary art museum, but it is a pity that is inside a box, the architect who designed it should be drunk.
