Madeira island is a nice place to observe cetaceen (whales and dolphins)...

Madeira island is a nice place to observe cetaceen (whales and dolphins) and we are able to go out all year long when the weather allows. Till now 28 species have been observed in our waters.

Our mission is to provide clients with a special experience raising awareness and understanding of the entire marine biodiversity of Madeira region.

Our trips start in Calheta, the harbour more in the southwest of Madeira. You can choose from two different vessels: "Ribeira Brava" our tradicional fishing boat or "Stenella" our "state of art" speedboat.

If you want more information you can find our Info-Center in the Marina in Calheta or contact us by phone or email

We did the tour this morning, barely left the harbour and saw a huge group of common dolphins feeding! Was beautiful! Lobosonda really make an effort not to go too close to the animals, disturb them or linger too long around them which I really valued as it shows they care about the animals. The speedboat was a great option,... More

Loved the RIB which was really fast and fun. I often have suffered sea sickness in the past but not on this RIB (I think being outdoors and being able to see the horizon also helps) as it's so speedy it scoots over the top of the whales. The guide helped us spot some whales and told us a bit... More

We had received a recommendation for Lobosonda, we were not disappointed. The staff were very professional and knowledgeable. Daniel was our guide and informed us exceptionally well on the dolphins seen Having only seen dolphins from high up on a cruise ship, being this close was just magical. I did take seasickness tablets which also "zone" me out a bit,... More

The trip itself was amazing, the RIB was fun and thanks to the spotter, we intercepted a group of pilot whales and two swam by the boat for a while really close! The crew were very knowable about the animals. Also there were beautiful views of the island from the sea. The only thing is that I got VERY seasick,... More

We decided to have another tour with Lobosonda and it was a great experience this time again. We saw a group of dolphins that we followed for some time and when the wind got to much were shown some of the cliffs of the shore - a unique experience for you only can go near them by boat. We enjoyed... More

We experienced snorkelling with families of spotted dolphins swimming right below us. Makes your body, heart and soul understand a lot about our "cousins" living under water...

This was a fascinating voyage although we did not see any wales. This was compensated for by the presence of porpoises and dolphins swimming alongside. Beautiful seabirds were a bonus. The guide spoke fluent English and also German on this occasion. I opted for the fishing boat rather than the speed boat option, but a word of warning! The sea... More

For a couple of days we regularly went to Lobosonda's office to check the sightings of the previous day. We knew that we probably didn't see anything but we went for it anyway. We originally planned to do the morning tour but they made a mistake at the time of booking and put us on the afternoon tour instead. That... More

I went out on the boat at about 5pm and it was still scorching hot but I was very kindly provided with a straw hat to protect me from the sun. I was a bit apprehensive about going on the boat as I'm not a brilliant sea traveller and some people where ill but I was absolutely fine and it... More
