Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

While the monastery buildings and the church are not particularly interesting, the setting and vistas are breathtaking. Wild mountains and ravines everywhere, a road snaking its way along a river at the bottom of the gorge..

If you are nearby do not miss it.

Very secluded monastery, with great views. Tranquil place for quiet thoughts. But it has some 100 steps or so to get to. Going to the monastery is downwards. Climbing back to the exit required some effort...

Definitely worth the slight effort.

Stunning and wild view of the monastery when you are looking at it as it is right down and inside the rock. From the monastery the view of the mountains around it is breathtaking. There is a parking lot outside.

We went to Elona via the coastal road from Nafplion to Leonidio and then turned inland heading up into the mountains. The road is narrow with some hairpin turns. In the parking lot there were 2 stands selling local products including honey and olives. We were greeted with the sound of a monk singing over the loudspeaker at the main gate. There is a long staircase that descends down to the monastery complex and chapel. When we arrived, we were alone for the first 20 minutes and it was very peaceful and felt like a place for spiritual reflection. Once the 3 bus loads of Greek orthodox pilgrims arrived it became anything but peaceful. The chapel is lovely. It smells like honey from the bees wax candles. No photos allowed in the chapel. The hanging balcony has a magnificent view of the valley.

This is a beautiful monastery build right inside the rock. The way towards the monastery through the greenery is breathtaking and there's even a path for mountain climbing or rock climbing. Bear in mind that it is an active monastery so there mind be a christening or wedding.

Honestly, having seen the incomparable monasteries at Meteora a few days before, this didn't have the same "wow" factor. It's still a worthwhile stop if you're traveling this road between say, Nafplio and Monemvasia. It's easy to access (by car), entrance is free, and you get fine views of the mountains. The church is pretty, but again you don't need to see it if you've seen other Orthodox churches.

If you have extra time to kill, see the town of Kosmas itself, some 14 km away. There's a picturesque town square, lined with tavernas serving the local speciality, goat stew.

Very interesting monastery hidden in the mountains. It is worth a visit while in the area. The church at the end is small but beautiful inside.

This emerging from the rocks Monastery (better to say Nunnery) has a history that dates back to 1300. However, the buildings you will see are constructed after 1809. It is situated on the 14th Km of the Road Kosmas-Leonidio and in order to reach it you might use your car, a taxi a public bus from/to Leonidio or....simply your feet. The most precious item (from religious point of view) is the icon of Virgin Mary holding baby Christ. In fact this is a place that for believers miracles do happen and good wishes come true (e.g the most common request is for couples that have problems in conceiving a child to come here and kindly ask for fulfillment). So as token of appreciation or as a kind request even today many people from the near by areas and villages (and not only) come to the monastery on foot especially near the day of the Assumption of Virgin Mary even from distances as far as Skala Laconias (about 60Km away). There are also people that regardless of faith consider it as an opportunity for hiking since the whole scenery is wild (but safe) and beautiful. Once you arrive you might witness a wedding, a christening, a mass or just pilgrims and tourists that either pay their respects or simply because it is an attraction and a good spot to see the view. At the gates of the Monastery there is sufficient Parking Space and some local products from local sellers for purchasing. For the people that do not believe or have another religion I can say that they are welcome but it is most kindly requested to be respectful and their clothes to be modest. For the believers that visit the Monastery I would say...: "Ask and you shall receive".
