Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We walked from Pico de facho via Boca do Risco to Porto da Cruz. This is a great walk when the weather is good. We walked initially along the lavada do Canical before turning off and gently up the valley to Boca do Risco. Lovely quiet valley with great views. Once at Boca do Risco there were great views along the coastline. We walked along the coastal path through woods providing shade before coming out and skirting round a cliff face. From a distance the path cut into the cliffs looks imposing however the path was wide enough but one needs to take care when walking - some fencing in parts ..... Very tall cliffs afforded great views. We then continued along the path through larano and down to Porto da Cruz, a nice small village on the coast. This is a great walk with breathtaking views but suggest only in good weather and sure footed. We got to and from this walk by bus.

Probably one of the most scenic hikes in Madeira! You get it all, stunning ocean views interspersed with jungle-like dales and so many photo ops you'll need to add a couple of hours to do this stunner justice. Warning, the parking area is really horrible around the closed tramway. Go a little further on the unpaved road for marginally better parking.

Overall about 8km Larano through Boca do Risco.. We were dropped at a dead-end overlooking PontaD'Cruz., which is awesome to look back on during the first 1km of rugged but level wide path. From then on it's all single width as it weaves through some shaded forest. Then the path then wraps itself around the cliff at some altitude and is precarious in many places, where there are sheer cliff drops and NO guard rails. Your risk, but our guide was ensuring we had good foot-holdings, thank goodness. Our morning was cloudless so quite hot & humid in places. Look down the cliff to the sea...it was a rare calm sea day on the north side.
Really spectacular views made it all worth while, however the last 2Km downhill to Machico is very rocky & rugged. Not for the infirm, asthmatic or faint-hearted ! Take a jacket, water, sun protection, sturdy boots and a human guide if not familiar.

Along the way, take some time to enjoy the sights and all the surrounding of this walk. Once you reach Porto da Cruz you can relax for a while and get to know this location of the island, full of unique cultures and traditions.

Length - 13 km; Time - 4-5 hours; Difficulty - hard

Very nice, easy hike. There is enough parking spot along the road and as well as right at the beginning of the trail. Lots of wonderful views from up there. Free entry as well!
