Part of a TUI day trip
Aug 2017 • Family
Only spent 40 minutes here as part of day trip visiting East of Madeira. Rum tasting was ok. Really strong stuff. But had poncho for those who didn't want their rum neat and juice for the kids.

Ok as a filler

It's really collection of machines and self read signs and notices. It gives you an idea of what production is like. We were left alone to walk round and 2 staff members basically ignored us.
The shop next door had a slightly warmer welcome. The serving girl said hello. Lots of barrels and bottles but again nothing to inspire.
It needed a more hands on approach. More tasting and explanations.

Not a real modern museum still great display of a functioning sugar mill
Dec 2015 • Family
It is, really, the very sugar cane mill that produces sugar spirits from fresh sugar cane juice during the sugar cane harvest season, of March to May (roughly). You see the equipment, including the 19th. century steam engine that runs the machinery (still by steam power!), the still pot past (copper kettle alembic) and column-type present... Bottling facility and, of course, the tasting area and sugar cane spirit bottles (rum, really...) for sale

Making rum the old fashioned way
Sep 2015 • Couples
Had no idea that this was in the town until I noticed the building one day when out walking. Visited one afternoon and were offered a sample of passion fruit liquor. No one else in the interior at the time we sipped our drinks and then began to look at the heavy equipment in the room. An 100 year old press from Glasgow and other pieces used in the sugar cane extraction process. We were left alone to wonder around and take pictures. The lights were low but they can turn them up if you wanted. Their were a few caves carved out of the earth you could explore. We had fun but it was pretty low key, not necessarily a must, but nice to spend a half hour if in Porto da Cruz. You can even buy some rum, Madeira or port in the museum.

Flash back to the past
Jul 2015
Entering the museum, you get the felling fo going back to the white sugar gold era. The big machinery and some of the tradicional items of those day, make's you travel and understand how important was this kind of places in our industrial revolution.
