We were recommended by our farm b&b that it was worth the drive and he was correct. On top of that it was free. Bring walking shoes as one needs to explore this big garden from its rolling lawns, to the lake through the trees and along the river.

Altamont Gardens is a must-see for anyone touring the Carlow/Wicklow/Wexford area. Laid out along the river Slaney, these gardens are free to enter with a choice of walks and views that must be the envy of other well-known gardens in these counties. Each time of year has a unique atmosphere that lends itself to the individual in a timeless way.... More

This is a fantastic place to visit.. Gardens are wonderfully kept .. There are lovely walks around and especially the one around the lake and down by the river.. Our lads really enjoyed it.. Nice that they have the plants labelled so you can if you like, purchase them at the garden centre. They have a nice coffee shop too.

We went during the "snowdrop" bloom! Lovely place to even just walk around - I am not very interested in gardening but the gardens and lake are beautiful. Good café and bathroom facilities too.

the good news is that the gardens at Altamount are free to visit..the bad news is that in September the Café and walled garden are not open....certainly not during the week. That having been said the gardens are being well maintained by the OPW(office for public works) and on a cool September morning I enjoyed the walk through the gardens and... This place is simply beautiful and offers some of the most beautiful gardens we've seen in Ireland. The grounds offer several walking trails and the views are fabulous. It looks like something from a Jane Austin movie. This was our first visit and will certainly not be our last. However, what a shame that the gorgeous house is empty and... More

I have been here numerous times, and in all seasons, and always spend an enjoyable couple of hours walking around the gardens, and following the stream down to the river Slaney, and coming back up the 100 steps! Children love it too, a mix of formal and wild! Plenty of places to run, hide and discover. The cafe (open summer... More

There are approximately 40 acres of gardens and meadows at Altamont. These gardens are near Tullow and Ballon in County Carlow. If one is traveling by car from Dublin to Kilkenny this is a worthwhile stop. There is an abundance of colorful blooms and there is a sense of freedom and informality. We even saw some different types of hens... More
