When most of Greece is overrun with tourists, this is a beautiful haven! Amazing clean and clear water! 2lounge chairs and an umbrella for the day is 6 euros. Swim on one side, snorkeling on the other, lots for kids and adults a like to explore!

We love our visits to Crete and have toured extensively around the north of the island, Rethymnon, Knosos, Spili, Vrisses - all magical with great hospitality. Today was an exception, with our visit to Frangokastello turning into a nightmare. We parked at the castle and strolled into the big taverna -opposite the fortress, where we were charged €250 for a meal for 2 adults and 3 children.

€250 for lunch- all we had was a fish, 2 children's portions of calamari, one glass of wine, one coke and a bottle of water!!!! We challenged the bill 3 times, refusing to pay the ridiculous charge. On the third occasion, we were surrounded immediately by 3 members of staff, who proceeded to intimidate us for 5 mins until we paid - not the full amount - but all the cash we had on us for our day trip from Rethymnon. Very threatening, especially with 3 small children in tow - which is probably why we were targeted in this manner.

Our advice, avoid Taverna Drosoulites, the big taverna opposite the fortress, at all costs. 5 star hotels on the Champs Elysses are cheaper. We have been to Greece 10 times and have NEVER been treated so badly anywhere. It's a disgrace to the island and all the other fabulous tavernas in Crete. It has ruined our holiday and we will never return to the south of the island. Didn't stay around after the horrible experience in Taverna Drosoulities, so can't comment otherwise on the area.

We have reported the matter to the tourist police as we hope nobody else will be 'robbed' and intimidated the way we were.

Yesterday we went to Frangokastello as is our tradition when staying on Crete. The castle is fascinating but while we all love the idea of dipping our toes in the Libyan Sea, STAY AWAY FROM THE BEACH. There are tide pools that bring the water table up to the exact point that can form patches of quicksand around it. I found myself waist deep in a patch while trying to make my way back to the castle. The gods were on my side today. I was able to crawl out of the quicksand and the car keys magically ended up on the top... fished them out with a very long stick. This must be a known danger or there would not be a lot of long sticks just lying around... if you must dip your toes, make sure to stay far away from the pools. The sand looks and feels compacted right until you sink into it. Use the long sticks to make sure your path is safe.

In the vicinity of the old Venetian castle there is a nice beach with sandy sections, a few rocks, and quiet atmosphere. We were here in July, but as it is rather remote, there are not many guests. On the very western part, near the Sunrise Taverna, there was running fresh mountain water, so it was possible to shower. Nice.

I love this beach, it has all the facilities, sunbeds, umbrellas, cafe, toilets, etc without feeling overly touristy.

The sea is usually warmer than on the North coast, the beach is sandy and the depth of the sea changes at a nice pace, not to steep or shallow.

There are a few rocks in the sea so I always wear beach shoes I can swim in but this is my choice rather than an absolute necessity. There is some seaweed as well but not enough to be a major problem and it is only near the shore, once you get out a little way there isn't any.

Go and enjoy.

We have travelled Crete end to end and top to bottom and believe that the beaches of Frangokastello are among the best in the island for the following reasons:

There are about 3 miles of different beaches to choose from.

The beaches are all sandy and the castle beach is perfect for children, but not busy. The sand here makes wonderful sand castles; (my grandchildren love it) and the sea is shallow, and very warm.

Swimming from all the beaches seems to be very safe and the water is crystal clear.

The views from the beaches are wonderful with a beautiful mountain backdrop and the 14th century castle gives a romantic touch.

The area is quiet with no mass tourism so the beaches are never crowded but there is always a taverna somewhere nearby.

Castle beach has sunbeds and a few pedalos the other beaches are untouched by tourism.

We love walking along Castle beach at sunrise and it's a special treat to sit on the beach at night looking at the stars.

We hit jackpot with this beach on our first day in Crete. So we drove from the north of the island for about 1.15h and weren't disappointed!

You can park by the castle for free and walk down a small set of steps to the beach and you'll be greeted by an amazing bay with a small local fisherman's marina to the west.

The water was crystal clear and very calm when we visited. There's a super hospitable restaurant and beach concession with beds/parasols to rent for 9 euros a set - worth it if you intend to spend the day there.

The sand is uber fine, and water is shallow at the edge so great for kids. There's a small island about 150m directly out from the beach that's great for snorkeling to if you're a confident swimmer, but the coastline alone (within a short swim of the beach) will reward any keen snorkeler with some nice marine life. No serious currents on a calm day...

The friendly concession minder offered us the pick of the fresh catch of the day around lunchtime and we grazed on an amazing BBQ grilled fish and salad for about 25 euros including a couple of beers. The fish was AMAZING, you have to try some if you're going.

Still in Crete, with plenty of exploring to do, but this place is perfection, our favorite beach so far - get there if you can!

Beautiful sight, quiete, no crowd, near stunning beach, good traditional and genuine food, polite and nice owners and waiters, especially the bosses's son I don't remember the name, about 25 Years old. I had my birthday party there with my family. Maybe I'll come back to that paradise.

Frangokastello has beaches ranging from gently shelving golden sand by the castle, to more shingly, rocky beaches further round the coast towards Chora Sfakion. We enjoyed snorkelling on the rocky parts, and relaxing on the sandy beaches by the castle which have sunbeds and brollies. There is something for everyone to enjoy here.
