Sri Lankan author Martin Wickramsinghe's beloved children's story "Madol Duwa" (the Mangrove Island) makes a visit to this island a must for every Sri Lankan who ever read the book. A story on the lines of the Famous Five by British author Enid Blyton, it is a tale of the boy Upali and his friend Jinna who runaway to this island and live like Robin Crusoe until they are reunited with their family. The trip by boat takes about 20 minutes, and the island itself can be explored in about the same time. There is little left of the authors landmarks, but the remains of a stone machine to extract oil gives credence to the story. There are other islands to visit and view nearby, including Cinnamon Island where you can buy Organic cinnamon products and visit a Fish Spa. A good way to keep the kids occupied on a slow day.
