A Breath of Fresh Air, only a 40 minute ferry trip from Athens
If you’ve had enough of the hustle and bustle of Athens, take the short ferry trip to the nearby peaceful island of Aegina. The Port of Aegina Town is quaint and dotted with lots of outdoor cafes, small shops, and the best pistachios in the world. Aegina is ideal for a day visit, but staying for a night or two provides time to explore the island. You will want to return!

our first stop during our sailing adventure
With a few friends we rented a sailing boat and explored the Saronic Islands. Aegina was our first stop after leaving Athens. Charming, lovely and enchanted. Mediterranean architecture, lovely restaurants and cafes, good food and friendly people. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Beautiful waterfront on a beautiful Island
On our trip to Athens we decided to visit one of the nearby islands and settled on Aegina, it is a 1hr 10min ferry away from Piraeus (you can do it quicker for more money) it costs €12 each, each way. The island is wonderful, crystal clear waters, an excellent waterfront and loads of bars/restaurants. I would highly recommend a visit to this wonderful place as part of your Athens trip.

The diversity of construction styles, covering many eras, contributes to an interesting architectural set. A highlight is the Orthodox Christian church of Agios Nectarios which is one of the largest churches in the Balkans. The museum and archaeological site of Kolona is another important point to visit. The site of Kolona housed the ancient Greek temple of Apollo from which a pillar still stands and stands out in the landscape.
The mandatory food that is found along the Aegina tour is pistachio. They are virtually the most famous product on the island and can be found in everything from various dishes to sweets and ice cream. It is mandatory to taste these delicious hard-shell pistachios that have a distinct taste.

The waterfront is fine - with its share of noisy motorbikes and traffic and a row of cafes and restaurants. My complaint is about the pistachio sellers - a woman seller on the side close to the water sold me a rather expensive bag of roasted pistachios. She gave me two to taste - they were excellent! - but the content of the bag was substandard, overroasted, tasteless. Shame on her giving a bad name to this wonderful island famed for its prime produce!

It was ok, but not much else to write about it, too busy especially more so in the evening.
It has a small beach not far from the port and some hotels dotted around.
I guess you could say its a place to be to watch every one going here there and everywhere after all it is a busy port and so many people waiting for a ferry or coming off the ferry more than twice in a day.

Stopped off here on several occasions whilst staying on Aegina, as it is also the site for the landing of ferries from Athens. The main waterfront is full of a variety of restaurants over looking the marina which is full of all manner of boats. From traditional Greek fishing boast , to floating vegetable stall to multi million pounds gin palaces its the perfect place to stroll along on a lovely day. Take time to go behind the waterfront and explore the many alleyways with a wide selection of shops and restaurants . Horse and carriage rides go along the front .

Very disappointing trip. Never have I met more rude people gathered in one place. Not helpful, even when they'd sell something to you. As tourists, we were trying to obtain information at the bus ticket office... What a disaster that was, not only they weren't helpful they were also rude. I don't know were to begin from...the bus ticket office, the boat ticket office, the ice cream place, the stuff on the boat from Pireaus... Really awful experience!

We spent about four days in Athens, and set one aside to take a ferry over to Aegina, the nearest island. It was gorgeous and one of the highlights of our trip. Visit the Temple of Aphaia, the Nektarios monastery, eat at the seaside, see the seaside churches.

An amazing location with natural beauty everywhere we went. Lovely little seaside town, but beware when eating seafood, as most restaurants try and serve frozen over fresh with tiny print at the bottom of the menu! One said to us, tourist cant taste the difference. To boot there is an amazing fish market smack in the middle of town, so no excuse to serve frozen produce at all.
Im from New Zealand and I can tell you, we can taste the difference!!
Found on the other side of the island its all fresh from the ocean on the day.

Absolutely wonderful in a shabby chic sort of way. Certainly plenty of shops and cafes, and a lovely promenade to watch the sunset and to walk off your dinner. The best feature for me was the Chapel of St Nicholas at the end of the pier, where you can light a candle before a long journey home.
