Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

While the guide, boat captain and bus driver were all capable and congenial, this was far more an all day bus ride than a boat nature tour. Five hours in a bus; two hours on the boat. Lunch was arroz sin pollo. My back still hurts!

We took the 6 AM boat tour which we were told would allow us to see the greatest variety of birds. It was well worth it. The tour guide met us in the lobby of the Natural Lodge and walked with us (about a 5 minute walk) to the boat. The boat sat about 8-10 people and had a covered roof which kept the sun off of us. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable of the local flora and fauna. Good binoculars are highly recommended for this tour. This is a must do if you are in Cano Negro.

The tour was well organized and very enjoyable. The tour guide Elena was very knowledgeable, coupled with her great sense of humor, she made the tour fun. We were picked up by a bus from our hotel and it was a two hour drive to the pier to board the boat and then we toured the refuge for an hour and a half. We returned to the pier for a Costa Rican buffet lunch. Delicious! Highly recommend this tour, it was a total of eight hours, but it was time well spent.

This was a great trip. Sergio our guide kept us engaged and shared lots of information about the area and things we saw. Our boat operator was fantastic “eagle eye”. We saw so many things on our boat ride. Monkeys. Sloths. Bats. Turtles. Alligators. And so many birds!!. And gorgeous trees and plants. It was a great resting day after a physical day before. On the bus ride ;about 90 minutes from La Fortuna we were able to use the bathrooms before the 3 hour ride.

We booked this trip as an excursion from El Silencio Lodge and it was easy to complete it in a day, although it does take a couple of hours to reach the river. You can choose a boat trip or a kayak. There is lots to see.
Checkout my travel blog (no ads. - just an honest view from someone who has actually been there!) for our full itinerary and practical insider tips. View my trip report for my top ten "must dos" for a luxury trip to Costa Rica. This trip is definitely one of them!

We decided to drive from La Fortuna rather than take one of the tours. $79 each for the tour in Fortuna, $70 for a private boat (all 4 of us) at the village. yes, it didn't include lunch, but we ate at the local place at the boat launch. cheap and great food. make sure you know the route (via highway 35) some of the map software takes you up the west side and you can't get there that way. lots of critters we hired the local young man who spoke English and had eye for the river along with a nice book that he used to help us understand what we were seeing. nice trip about a 2.5 hour drive from Fortuna.

Our guide greeted us in the lobby and was on time. The driver and the guide were both name Jorge. They were friendly, funny and helpful. The guide was very knowledgeable about the local wildlife. The driver even helped me get fantastic pictures with my not so fantastic phone camera!
I had my first official Costa Rican food here. Lunch was provided by the tour and it was great.
Overall, I would say it was worth the $65USD.
They picked us up, drove us 1 1/2 hours, 2 hour tour, lunch and drove us back to our resort. Would visit again! Pura Vida!

Cano Negro riverboat safari was excellent. It was not crowded when we were there. The guide was very knowledgeable about the type of animals and their habitats. We saw many birds: blue heron; storks. So many caimans. Howler monkeys, spider monkeys and capuchins. The lunch was plentiful and delicious.

I loved seeing all the different animals. It was also nice to have someone ride us around, tell us about things, find animals for us to see (many I had never seen in person), and it was a beautiful day. Boat was comfortable. It was an easy way to see things with minimal effort.

My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the boat tour in Cano Negro. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and informative about the land and wildlife. Our guide also did a fantastic job in pointing out wildlife such as, birds, Caymans, Iguanas, and Monkeys. They provided us with binoculars to help see the wildlife, and also used a laser pointer to help spot the camouflaged animals. Would definitely recommend!

Hi - did you drive using road 35 to los Chile or if not which road did you use and is it easy to hire a guide. Thank you

yes that is the route and it;s really easy to find a guide/boat at the village. there will be several people there asking if you need 'information'. we paid $70 US for 4 people and had the boat to ourselves. look for a young man with a bird guide book, field glasses. he speaks some English and really know his birds and wildlife and was very helpful. we went on a Sat and there was no problem and no need to get there early, so take your time and enjoy.

Hoeveel betaal je voor deze boottocht? En, kun je deze een dag van te voren ter plekke boeken of is het aan te raden/kun je dit al vóór je reis boeken?

How many fish species are there in Cano Negro? One of the species is one of the oldest species of fresh water fish. What is it's name?
Written 5 November 2018
I think that you must be referring to the Alligator Gar as one of the most ancient fish species, and some very large ones have been taken from the Rio Frio in or near the wildlife refuge. There are also Snook and Tarpon, in season, but these migrate to the Atlantic Ocean at other times. As to how many species exist there you would have to ask an icthyologist who has studied that watershed. And, who knows, there may also be dozens of minnows and other small fish species, some of which might be new to science!

If you are adventurous, just drive to Cano Negro...its about an hour drive off the main road through farmland. The road is gravel and dirt. Use the WAZE APP and head straight into town. The road basically ends at the river. There is a "INFORMATION" booth, gate, whatever you want to call it. Ask for Captain DON LOLO. His house is actually just past the "INFO" booth across from the town park. He's a 75 year old local who is AWESOME. He speaks very little English but we had no problem because hablamos un pocito espanol.

Bonjour!

Gracias
