About
Preveli Beach is a beautiful sheltered beach, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and palm forest. Of the three ways to reach Preveli Beach, arriving by boat is the easiest. The other two options involve either 470 steep steps from the parking lot or a hike and wade across a river—appropriate footwear is advisable either way. There are plenty of photo opportunities along the river and from the surrounding cliffs, and be sure not to miss the heart-shaped rock at the mouth of the river. Stick around till sunset for exceptionally stunning views. A small bar serves simple refreshments and snacks, with basic bathroom and shower facilities. – Tripadvisor

    Special scenery and lookout point
Beautiful bay with palm trees alongside the river that meets the sea at the end of the canyon. We reached it by car and the way to there is impressive. However the hike from the East side parking spot to the beach is exhausting because of the (many high) steps. Hiking boots highly recommended & prepare for higher winds up there.

    Decent, but Not Memorable
It’s a decent beach but not worth a special trip in my opinion. Based on the other beaches I visited in Crete, this probably fell closer to the bottom. The aerial pictures of the river intersecting with the water are pretty, but that’s not what you experience from beach level. You can wade up the river a bit and take a few pics after a minor hike from the parking lot, then you’ll probably find the geese the most entertaining feature.

    Lovely unique beach
The beach was lovely and the fresh water river adjacent to the beach was unique and picturesque. The walk/hike to the beach is reasonable, we are both quite fit but I think anybody would find it reasonable unless they had mobility difficulties, I did it in flip flops but with hindsight would probably pack trainers. We went in September and it was still busy but not to busy. I would recommend bringing your own food as the restaurant is limited and the flies are excessive (however to be expected in an open restaurant).

As you can see, you will be just as excited about the beach as you are about the palm forest.
In heat with warm weather not the best option but worth. If you are in Crete you have to go ! For your visit to this enchanting spot, you need to dedicate a whole day to it. Also, if you're not a fan of very cool water, avoid the right part of the beach where the water of the river ends and prefer to stay in the centre of the sea.

    Mountain hike if you drive
If you take a boat tour to Preveli, you’ll avoid the hike up & down the 500ft mountain from the car park. Once we started down the hill, we were compelled to finish knowing the way back up would be a hike. It is an adventure - wear sneakers! The view from above is stunning - mountains, river, sea, palm forest is quite unique. Once down, there was plenty of lounge chairs and open beach & some shady spots. The Palm Forest was lovely and the river in the gorge was fun to see. I enjoyed the trip for its unique scenery.

Not as impressive as the reviews
The pictures you see of this beach look amazing, however getting to it is a nightmare. There is a huge carpark at the top of the cliff but then you have to hike all the way down. We never saw any umbrellas or beach chairs for rent, everyone seems to bring their own and it gets VERY busy! We never bothered to walk down, instead we went to nearby Souda beach.

    Nice, but Instagram spoiled it
Mixed emotions on this one. The stream joining the beach is as pretty as the photos, but there were hundreds of people lining it from one side to the other. There is only one restaurant, cafe style and it was very very bust at 12 when we got there. Be warned about the ~400 steps to get to and back again from the beach. We enjoyed the climb but might not be for everyone. Scenery great, but super busy which killed some of the charm for us.

    Truly a beautiful place :)
I went there on an excursion with my friends last week. It was a little challenging 15 mins hike down as it was very very busy and hot, walking at noon was no joke. It is a really special place to visit, the palm trees are beautiful and the sea is exceptional but cold. I couldn't stay in the water for more than 10 minutes hahahah. We travelled over 3,5 hours with the bus to get there. It was extremely extremely busy and with only one taverna operating + 2x toilets it was a struggle, they should definitely build more since they know this is one of the most popular beaches on the island. Overall, I think it was definitely worth it to go there even with the many many hours of travel time and the million people there. It was a once in a life time thing for me and I probably wouldn't go back. If you have the chance, I would recommend you visiting it if possible in the more quiet months like September or October.

If you don't have health issues, definitely try it
500 steps to go and unfortunately to come back to the top where the parking lot is (2€ for a day)...So in case you don't feel very well, especially during the hot noon hours, don't try it. In any case totally worth your effort and pain... Walk through the lake, go and explore the palm tree Forest. There is only one cantine at the beach. But there is a lot of shade to be seated. Have fun! 😀

    Is it worth it?
It is two hours away from northern Crete. Once there you need to walk 300/350 steps downhill to get to a very crowded beach with just one snack bar. The sea water is not that crystal clear. The river flowing into a gorge in which you can walk sided by palm trees is amazing. It is unique. But one hour suffices for the walk into the river (for which you need rock proof shoes) or along it. But is such experience worth 4 hour drive?

Again, as some have alluded to, I really don't understand what the fuss is about at all. A very small beach which, on a Monday in peak season, was absolutely packed. It's a substantial drive from pretty much anywhere. The climb down from the overcrowded car park (we had to queue for half an hour to get in) would be impossible for some. Once you've overcome the 20 minute steep decline with a mixture of rocky steps, loose rocks, dirty rocks and erm, some more rocks, what awaits you simply isn't worth the pay-off. One small cafe with another snaking queue caters for the whole beach. 'Ah!! But it's got a freshwater river feeding into it!!!' I've seen more impressive puddles, which haven't been somehow ice cold to dip your toe into. Two stars, because once you swim out to sea, the view is nice, so long as you're not decapitated by frequent taxi boats which come very close to the shore. Save your time and effort, and go somewhere else.

The photos make it look idilic. The reality is about as far from idilic as you can get. It is about a 45 mins drive to get to along winding mountain roads. The car park (€2.50 per car) at the end was packed which was a warning sign.

There is then a 30 mins walk, steeply down hill and clearly up hill on the way back. This should mot be undertaken by those unfit or in poor health. Once on the beach it is a small strip of grey sand with some trees lining one edge. It is no better than any other beech in Crete. On this strip of land are hundreds of tourists, desperately trying to find shade.

There is one ‘bar’ selling drinks at four times the going rate.

Overall, hugely disappointed. Total waste of time. Would not recommend it to anyone.

Both the beach and the palm tree river are lovely and great to swim in. The water is deep in parts but there's shallow parts too for kids. Yes, the place was pretty busy, but you wouldn't expect a place like this to be quiet during the day. There's a tavern where you can purchase food and drink, and there's toilets close by.

Useful info for tourists:
We booked the excursion though Iakovos Travel, which I would definitely recommend using a travel provider, if you don't fancy walking down. For us, it was about 1 to 1 and half hours coach (from near rethymno) and 30 mins my boat to access the palm beach from the coach drop off. Cost pp: 20€ coach and 13€ boat trip.

Ideally the place is amazing as many others in Crete. However, there are a few "buts". Firstly, as frequently happens on this island, reaching the place requires quite a long and adventurous walk downhill (and uphill to come back...). Clearly, you should be fit enough and with a good pair of shoes. I considered this advantageous as a warranty of limited visitors. Completely wrong as a sort of ferry vomits dozens of tourists at least five times per day. The bottomline is that it is frequently overcrowded. My advice is to go there after 4 in the afternoon when it is more pleasant from this point of view. The beach is not big but quite spacious. There are rocks here and there that could be explored by snorkeling. A nice bar-restaurant is also there and offers a good range of products. There are no umbrella but trees that could offer some shelter from the sun. The access to the sea involves some walking on slippery cobblestones, be careful. Overall it is a nice place but go there early june or mid september. If in July-August, very late afternoon is probably better.

Beautiful spot, well worth the effort to visit. All seemed clean and tidy, palm tree lined gorge leading to the beach is well worth exploring.
Car park 2 Euro is high above the beach and there is a 500 step steep path down to the beach., you’ll need decent footwear if being sensible, great views from the footpath. Obviously the climb back up will be tougher. We visited in mid Oct and swam in the sea. We found the sea warmer being on the Libyan south of the island in comparison to the Mediterranean in the north, this being despite the cold mountain river flowing into the sea (which was actually great to dip into after the sea swim to rinse off the salt water. Being Oct it was no too busy, expect it’s mobbed in summer

The path down to the beach is very steep (500 steps) and I do not recommend it for older people or small children. For others, it should not be a problem. The beach itself consists of grey sand with a lot of pebbles. The water is super nice and clear but does get deep quickly. The river and palm forest are amazing and super beautiful. The river is freezing cold but that can be very refreshing with the high temperatures in Greece.

The payed parked (2€ cars) is on top of the mountain and then you follow the path downhill towards the beach. Many touristic boats reach that beach along the day. you have a café in the beach to supply your hungry and thirsty.
next to it, you will find the Palm Forest trail (a track along side the river). It's a beautiful spot, and you can enjoy walking int ge river (it's shallow and clear water). The Palm trees offer a nice shade for the sunny hit.

I enjoyed the boat trip from Plakias to Preveli, also the river running down to the sea was quite picturesque. However, the beach area is somewhat limited and there were notices on both sides of the river prohibiting walks through the palm trees because of fire risk. Therefore an hour or two at this location was quite long enough. There is a cafe with tables under the trees, but the toilets were dirty and inadequate ( one for men one for women) for the hundreds of visitors that come each day.
